Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Andie is an incredibly kind, patient and wonderful trainer. Both me and Coco used to look forward to her visits. She not only focuses on training the dog but also helps you become a better dog parent. Her training program is very well structured and her handouts very detailed and instructive. She trained Coco really well and we are grateful to her for that.

This was the most awesome experience for both myself and my dog. Pamela is an amazing trainer - she is like the dog whisperer. I love that she trains with no treats - our Aussie now listens by commands and I don't have to fumble with treats in a bag or pocket. I not only had a great experience working with Pamela, she truly became a friend in the process.

From booking to the actual session, we were very impressed. They offered great customer service and were timely with responses. Our German Shepherd has responded really well. We thought she was an agressive dog and we had tried the techniques of another dog trainer to little success. We felt pretty defeated. Lauren pointed out our dog was suffering from anxiety and lack of socialization. Lauren has shown us how to overcome our dog's anxiety, and ours, and to be the pack leader. Lots of information in just one session and she brought the tools we needed. We were able to take our dig to a dog friendly big box store the next day and she was extremely well behaved. We have work ahead of us but it feels like it is something we can do now. Lauren didn't seem to think our dog would require a lot of training on her end but explained what she could offer in the future if we wanted to explore additional training opportunities. We would highly recommend the Traveling Dog Trainer and will not hesitate to use her services again.

JP and his wife are responsive in their customer service, and are very professional. We (humans and dog) immediately felt at ease with them both. They have tremendous respect for the owners and the dogs equally, and are not critical of other training methods - they simply believe they have a system that works best! I like that they are respectful and don't criticize other methods - that tells me they are open minded, and that they don't have to lower others with criticism to make their service look good - it looks good all on its own because of their honesty and integrity - now...time will tell if our dog continues to respond to their training methods - we have a lot of confidence going into the private training!

Amazing training session! We learned a lot of great training techniques that we can use on our own to help with our pup. I saw improvement with my dog right away and it has really helped us! I would 100% recommend!

Extremely personable and knowledgeable. Just on our first lesson, he really helped me a lot with my 120 pound Rottweiler. He also was knowledgeable about my breed as well as the best way to approach my dog. I highly recommend Chris for any dog training needs.

Howard is great! We did at-home private obedience lessons for our rescue German Shepherd. Howard was respectful and professional of our wishes to stay socially distanced during our first few lessons, and we are incredibly grateful for that! Since we don't know too much of our rescue German Shepherd's background, we were unsure what type of training was needed. Howard supported us through the 8-week course and helped us get to know our dog and his behavior better. He gave us a foundation that will help us be better dog parents! We highly recommend Howard and Canine Training Center for obedience training.

We hired Benji to help train good habits for our Beagle Pup. Benji did really fantastic work!! We realized that more than my Beagle pup, I was the one who needed more training. Benji taught me and my pup, communication, consistency regarding dog behaviors. My puppy responds very well to his training methods. Follow Benji's training methods, they are simple, straightforward and results bearing if you stick with it, and are patient. I would highly recommend hiring Benji. 5 Star service and results. Details: Beagle puppy female, < 6 months.

I adopted my 2 year old dachshund mix, Freddy, almost a month ago. I was not disclosed any of his obvious issues of anxiety and defensive aggression, and was starting to wonder if I had made a mistake, especially when he became aggressive to our 5 year old border collie husky mix, Sven. After 4 weekly sessions with Andie, it’s like Freddy is a new dog. He has learned sit, lay down, come, leave it, place, and we are now working on stay and leash training, as well as socialization! She supplies so much valuable information every week to help you get the most out of her training when it’s just you. Freddy is so much more confident and playful, and I finally feel fully equipped to work with him further. He and Sven are also so loving and affectionate to one another now! I can’t recommend Andie enough. She’s always in communication if you have an issue, and really seeks to see a dog’s character beyond surface level behavior issues.
