I hired Pat to repair several cracks in the plaster walls and ceiling of our old house and he did a marvelous job. The repair turned out to be larger than expected when it was discovered that the masonry wall had separated due to foundation settling and this was allowing air penetration into our house. Pat quickly repaired the masonry wall and then got back to doing an artisan plaster repair, we are very pleased with the result. Pat is detail oriented and takes pride in his work. We hired Pat a second time to install a tile backsplash in our kitchen and again he did excellent work. No doubt we benefited from his years of experience and I am confident that we will hire him again to help with our next remodeling project.

Kirt was the contractor for my whole house remodel two years ago. We gutted every bathroom, the kitchen, most of the flooring, moved walls, added rooms and a half bath. The result is beautiful and so functional. I had worked with him on smaller projects in the past so I already knew it would be a good experience but Kirt exceeded my expectations in every way. The quality of his work and his standards in the work he supervised was top notch. He took my ideas and my interior designers plans and strived to execute them exactly, often texting me picture of small details that I hadn't specified to ask me how I wanted it. Any other contractor would have just done everything their normal way but Kirt knew I was very opinionated and wanted to make sure I got things my way. He never argued with what I wanted or tried to talk me out of my plans. Occasionally he would give suggestions on how to make my designs even better than I had imagined. Personality wise, Kirt is very patient, very trustworthy, steady and calm. I actually felt a sense of relief once the house remodel was underway because I knew it was in his hands. An example of his patience is when I picked a grout color I wasn't sure about for my fireplace hearth, he offered to make me a sample board with extra tiles and grout it in the color I chose. Once he did that, I realized I had chosen the wrong color and I picked a new one. He made another sample up and I realized I hated that color too! I think he ended up cheerfully making 4 or 5 sample boards up for me without a single complaint. He wanted to make sure I was happy. And he is trustworthy, I felt totally comfortable in leaving my house and even my kids with him in the house while he was working. At one point I even gave him a credit card of ours to use for a few months on purchases for our home remodel and he never abused that trust. Some people have asked me if I wish anything was different about my house. I always say not one thing! I got exactly what I wanted. Unfortunately we had to sell this home for an unexpected move out of state. But the beauty and quality of our remodel helped our home to sell for a lot more money than neighboring homes, and we even had a bidding war because once people saw this home, they fell in love. In short I wish I could hire Kirt again, I would do it in a heartbeat for our new house in Michigan!

First time remodeling a home so am glad we found the right person to helpwith the job. Had my popcorn ceiling removed and texturing and painted all for a reasonable price and it turned out great. Now we’re on to the next tasks and we couldn’t be more happy than to have Dru do the jobs.

Tom was a cheerful competent guy. Flexible and easy to collaborate with. Good ideas. He had some difficulties with finding a good helper but I really liked that he was helping these kids. Tom had an understanding of Many more areas than just electrical. I liked His calmness and sense of humour I'd call him again or recommend him to my friends.

I hired Artisan for a major remodel and room addition. Not only did the room addition come together well, but I now glad to live in what feels like a completely new home on the same old piece of land. What an amazing job!!!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
