I'm a Realtor in CA and I had a referral for a client who needed work done in Salt Lake Area (Sugar House) and I was looking for someone reliable. I found Phillip and his crew at Crown Services and made the introduction. They did a wonderful job and the client was happy enough that she called ME to say thank you - so, it was a win-win-win. Thank you Crown Services. Would love to send more people your way!

I worked with this company a few months back on remodeling our guest house. I was very pleased with the work the did. Getting the project started took a little while. I met with Char which to my understanding is the project manager it was a delight work with her. When the builder showed up he created exactly what I wanted. They where there to help us and answer our questions. The companies that come out before them where making us feel like just another job. I would and have recommended this company. They are currently working on my sister in law's house in Ogden.

It was a pleasure working with Justin. He was very thorough and made sure he got our shelves down to the exact size, type of wood and color that we wanted. The fact that he didn't charge us extra for supplies was a breath of fresh air. Most contractors will double your price simply from charging you more for supplies. But he didn't. He bought them at his cost and we just paid him for his time and hard work. We absolutely love our floating shelves that he created for our living room. It was exactly what we wanted and he got it done quicker than we thought too! We'll definitely be hiring him to do a few other projects in our house like creating the mud room and fixing a light in our kitchen.

Stefan came and completed my repair job in a little over an hour. He was very thorough and experienced in explaining what he was doing. I'm filing him away as a go-to plumber when I get ready to renovate my entire basement. Highly recommend!

This job entailed removal of tile, linoleum and underneath that a lovely display of a zillion staples. The ask was to help us remove the rest of the flooring which we'd spent 2 days on, and lay down the tile we'd purchased. Mike and Alex were prompt, extremely friendly and offered knowledgeable advice and guidance through the process. The end result is a beautiful new tile floor with stone transition that is the foundation for all the other work we need to have done. Thanks Mike! Thanks Alex!

HSD Remodeling has done several projects of varying sizes on our house, and we've been very pleased with their work. Scott Rodriguez, the owner of HSD Remodeling, is very personable, an excellent communicator, quick to respond to our questions and concerns. He's been thoughtful and creative about solving problems in our charming, 100+ year-old house. We were unhappy with some work one member of Scott's crew did on a small project. Happily, Scott moved quickly to resolve the problem to our mutual satisfaction. We've worked with a couple of other general contractors in the past; Scott and HSD Remodeling has been the best. Even better, HSD's rates have been very fair. We will continue to hire them and recommend them to friends.

Going through a major house renovation, my wife and I haver worked with multiple contractors in the past 4 months. Working with Clark was a breath of fresh air. He was honest, hard working and paid really close attention to the details. He reported every step along the way and made sure my wife and I were happy. We will definitely be working with Clark again and would highly recommend him to anyone thinking about hiring him.

After interviewing many other professionals, I decided to go with Ryan for my basement renovation. I had him bid out the prepping and painting of my 1600 sq. ft space. As an Interior Designer, I have worked with many Contractors, Builders, Architects and so forth and have learned the importance of listening to my gut. He fit the bill! Ryan is straight-forward, honest, and very well versed in his trade. Not to mention extremely fair with his pricing. He is detail oriented and went above and beyond to finish the job on time, all while exceeding my expectations. I will absolutely be using him for future projects and highly recommend him without any trepidation.

Also had them paint the entire house and some chair rail and special request for the babies room.. I'm turned out fantastic and I next time I need work done I would definitely have them do it again.. Cody impressed me from the day I met him and described my vision of putting a full bathroom in my basement where there was currently not a bath. He helped me make hard decisions easily and he was a great value. I knew he was the guy when he was pulling tape and started laying out all the underslab plumbing and showing me where the best location and size shower would be. He exceeded my expectations given my less than exciting budget. I would and will hire him again. As a side note I am a commercial/industrial construction manager and I know quality work as well as means and methods. I saw the first day’s work from Cody and never once had a concern from there out. The pictures do not do the work justice.

I found Jim on Craigslist 2 years when I first needed someone to gut renovate my kitchen. Not only did he do a great job technically, but he also guided me (first time apt. owner) through problems with an incompetent electrical contractor. A few months ago it was time to paint; with an added twist - I now live in India. I called Jim because he had shown himself to be a true professional and a honest individual. We did everything by phone/email, and my new tenant tells me they love the paint job. That's how good he is, and how easy it is to work with him...

Excellent work. Brett installed our fence quickly. He also took our ideas for the fence and he built upon those ideas to construct a fence that was both unique and beautiful. Many people in our neighborhood stopped to admire his work and set up their own future projects. Besides the fence, Brett also redid our front awning and railing. We had hired a handyman last year and he did a terrible job: I had to fire the guy. Brett came in and completely remodeled the terrible work and ended up creating a beautiful masterpiece that will give our house significant curbside appeal. He was very friendly and easy to talk to. He worked hard to make sure we knew what he was doing and to work on both these projects quickly. He was there everyday working long hours to finish the projects in a very timely manner. His prices, for the high quality work he performed was also very reasonably priced: no buyers remorse here. We are so impressed by Brett's devotion to customer service and masterfully skilled work and outcome, that we plan on hiring Brett again next time we have some major projects on the house. Do not hesitate to call him.

I've been very impressed with Efrain. He's very knowledgeable in nearly every area of construction and he works hard. I would recommend him over any general contractor as his quality and price are outstanding. He's doing a much better job than other other construction jobs we've had. He does electrical, plumbing, HVAC, drywall, carpet, and many other areas of home renovation and new construction. As a small business owner myself I am very pleased with the overall quality and experience in working with Efrain. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM!

I had a flooded basement & was looking for contractors to renovate. Called several referrals and got no response except BCB (thankfully). Jesse came, presented a bid & took me to past projects. He kept very close to his original bid even though, there are always unexpected circumstances. His team came nearly every day until finished. Their quality of work is amazing and any time anything went awry, It was corrected. I loved everyone on his team and I miss them like family since they completed. I'm so proud of the finished space. A neighbor came to see my basement and complimented my good taste and I honestly said, "It was Jesse!" When I win the lottery, I want them to come back and reno the upstairs.

I couldn't have been happier with Aaron's knowledge and understandings of our wants with our remodeling project. He went above and beyond our expectations and thought about all the little details throughout the project. He was informative and kept us up to date until the very end. His quote was very reasonable and his finished product was even better. I would definitely recommend his services to any friends that are in need of home renovations.

We met with the owner, Samson, and he was prompt and helpful with the plans we had for a renovation. We hope to be working with him.

We like to think that we are a part of a small group of contractors that provide a wide range of services, providing customers with peace of mind that they're not going to be financially burdened by the hiring of multiple contractors and delivering excellent results in our quality and one-on-one relationships with our customers.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
