Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much do you tip movers?

It’s recommended that you tip your movers individually around $4 to $5 per hour. For example, if a team of four movers spends a half-day (four hours) on your move, tip each mover $20. Or, some people tip 5% to 10% of their total bill for small moves and 15% to 20% for larger moves.

If you’re moving across state lines, you may hire different crews to load and unload your goods. In that case, divide the tips between both crews. It’s also a good rule of thumb to add a bit extra for tipping movers if you have special circumstances that have made the move harder, like a spiral staircase or an exceptionally heavy sofa.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

This is a rare occasion where 5 stars just aren't enough! We had 3 movers move us from our second floor apartment to our new home. Each mover was so curteous and professional. These guys know how to HUSTLE! They ran up and down the stairs like it was nothing and kept that energy the entire 4.5 hour move. Their positivity never faltered--even while moving the piano. They were priced so well and took great care in everything. I love their message and would hire them again in an instant!

I contacted Joseph on Christmas day and he responded right away. I sent him pictures of what needed to be moved and he was able to give me an estimate. Joseph and his guys are very experienced and work so fast. They moved our stuff from the house to a storage unit in a couple of hours. We are very pleased with TAU MOVERS and would recommend them to anyone who needs help moving.

I hired "The Other Side Movers" for my move. To say that I was extremely satisfied with their service is an understatement. They were phenomenal! The arrived a few minutes early and after a quick walkthrough, they got started right away. I was impressed by their professionalism and politeness the entire time. I even noticed them jogging back and forth from the truck to the house and back. In all, they were able to complete my move of 30'ish miles in about an hour and 45 minutes which was outstanding and simply easy to deal with. They were great. They say moving can be one of the most stressful events of your life, not this time for me because "The Other Side Movers" made the transition as easy as it could possibly be. THANK YOU!

The service and the mover's demeanors were excellent. They arrived promptly and worked hard. They were very, very careful with my things, and wrapped the large pieces with plastic to protect them in transit. My experience with movers in the past is there is an attempt to pad the charges or add extra things to my bill, but that was not the case with The Other Side. My bill was actually less than I had expected. The best thing about these movers is their mission. I felt like I was helping them while they were helping me. You can read their story on their website. Overall, a great moving experience!

I took a moving service from Eric. We chatted over thumbtack app and decided a day as his quote was the cheapest of all. His service includes 2 movers + truck. So we did not have to book u-haul. He and another mover was 1. absolutely *punctual* - arrived at the door 5 mins before. 2. *responsive* - they moved everything with care and no damage. They had add the required equipments and blankets to carry the boxes and large sized bean bag. I would rate over all work quality with 5 starts. Thanks Eric for your service once again!

These guys are on the ball. Anthony set everything up, making a potentially stressful situation very easy. He sent two movers who were hard workers, professional, punctual and personable. They did their job well and didn't waste time which I appreciated. They even accommodated my last-minute move and charged less than anyone else. Very reasonable rates. I will call Right Track when I need to move again.

I hired The Other Side Movers to move my 1-bedroom apartment into my new location. I had everything packed in boxes and ready to go for them. I had my bed taken apart and ready for them to move it. I brought my own shrink wrap/tape to save on cost. If you have your own supplies they will use them instead of charging you for theirs. Just a tip for saving a little money. Dave and his team of 5 (I was only charged for 3) nice, polite, friendly and very hard working guys arrived ready to go. They arrived a few minutes early to assess the parking lot and availability of parking. They came in assessed the items to be moved and got right to work. They had my entire apartment loaded and secured in their truck in 30 minutes. I met them at my new address and they had it unloaded, helped with assembly of my bed, removed all the shrink wrap from my bedroom set, cleaned up and gone in under an hour. The entire move took 1.5 hours. There was a 2 hour minimum and I knew that when I hired them. So this was not a surprise. Every single item was handled with the utmost care and professionalism. They even took away a large bakers rack that I no longer wanted. They were happy to have it and take it back to their facility to use there. I really like the fact that Dave jumped right in with the guys and worked along side them. He didn't just direct the move, he was in the move. I cannot express enough how appreciative I am of these guys and their positive attitudes and hard work. I highly recommend The Other Side Movers to anyone looking to move anything. They are awesome! Thank you Dave and your team of hardworking guys. You made my move a stress free one.

Jonathan (the owner) texted me the morning of our move to let me know his grandpa died. I’m sorry if his grandpa truly did die but based on multiple other reviews he seems to have a reputation for standing people up so I have my doubts if he was sincere or not. When I asked if he could still send the 3 other guys who were supposed to help with the move he claimed two of them were his brothers and the other guy was too new to help. He offered to pay for some of the cost for other movers but then completely ignored me when I followed up about it. It made a stressful moving day 1000x more stressful with the last minute cancellation and unprofessionalism. I wouldn’t count on them and don’t recommend.

I was recommended this company by a friend bc they were so quick and nice. I called a week before my move to get it set up, he said it would be a flat rate small move for $250, and it included 2.5 hours, 2 guys and a truck. I don’t have many things at all, a one bedroom apartment. Moving day came, they were 2 hours early, I wasn’t ready, but they started anyway. They were definitely fast, but they didn’t protect any of my furniture.. a leg on my sofa is broken and the bottom of my buffet is damaged because they didn’t lift it from the bottom. After all this it was only 2 hours, under time. So that was cool. I was charged $315.. when I was told it would be $250. I didn’t make a fuss while the movers were here, but I texted the manager afterwards and I still haven’t been refunded or even replied to and it’s been a week now. My friend who referred me moved a 2 bed apt with a ton of boxes and furniture got charged $320. Doesn’t seem fair to me. Be careful not to get ripped off.
