Introduction: I am an experienced voice and piano teacher with a home music studio in the South Ogden area (281 W 5350 S). My students (both kids and adults) enjoy fun, focused lessons adapted to their personality, interests, and needs. They learn everything from technique and theory to musical expression and styles from all periods. Lessons are guided by goals that we identify together each week. Students earn rewards and scholarships (free lessons) by consistently meeting their goals. I have a bachelor's degree in music education from Weber State University and have directed, coached, and accompanied numerous choirs and soloists of all ages. My two sons ages 13 and 16 started taking piano lessons with Rawson this spring. It was my idea and I wasnt sure if they would be interested. I attended their first lesson and was so impressed with Rawsons ability to engage them, excite them about music, and teach them the intricacies of making music. He had them bring any pieces of music we had at home that they were interested in. Then they played a piece for him. In just a few minutes of his instruction, they improved in their playing to the point that they were actually enjoyable to listen to. By the time we left his studio, my boys were completely on board and anxious to practice and learn. And I was feeling like mother of the year for finding Rawson as a piano teacher for them.Two words I would use to describe Rawson as a music teacher are qualified and encouraging. I say qualified because Rawson has an incredible amount of musical knowledge. It is obvious that he loves music and derives a great deal of joy from making music himself and helping others find that joy. What I really appreciate, though, is the positive, patient way he interacts with my boys. It would be completely against his nature to get upset or berate them for not practicing or not playing as well as he thinks they should. He is able to give them a vision of how a piece of music could feel and sound then give them the skills and confidence to be able to create that musical feeling themselves. Rawson is very organized and uses tracking sheets and rewards to encourage the boys to practice. The tracking sheets are simple and not a burden for them to fill out. I like the way Rawson has the year divided into three terms with recitals in the middle of fall and spring terms and a very flexible choice of summer lessons.

I had the pleasure of working with Rawson for several years during the time I served as music director at a local church in Layton. Our music ministry was short on piano accompanists and a neighbor of mine referred me to Rawson. Based solely on his ability to play piano, I hired him on the spot as a regular accompanist at one of our services, but we got so much more than an accompanist. With Rawson we had the rare good fortune to have hired a professional musician with degrees in music and education. Soon he was leading vocal clinics for our various choirs and teaching our youth piano lessons in hope that eventually we could train up some accompanists of our own. Rawson is generous with his talents and has a way of inspiring people of all ages to become better musicians.

Rawson is an extremely skilled musician both in voice and piano. His style, interpretation, and understanding of the musical qualities of a piece and his ability to both perform and relay this through his teaching skills is remarkable. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
SEASON COST Lessons come in groups called 'seasons' that roughly align with school semesters (Fall, Spring, and Summer). Each season includes a set number of lessons. The season cost is determined by the price per lesson ($18 per 25-min or $36 per 50-min) times the number of lessons. Payment can be made upfront or in equalized monthly payments, due at the first lesson of each month. Cash, checks, Venmo, or credit/debit cards are all accepted. Late payments may incur a $10 fee. DISCOUNTS 1) Students who consistently meet lesson goals qualify for a 'scholarship' gift card for one free lesson. 2) Receive 10% off when two or more members of the same household each take lessons during the same period of time (not sharing a lesson time). 3) One month of free lessons after someone you refer has taken lessons for one month. MATERIALS Some study materials are included (a study binder, exercise sheets, trackers, etc.), but students will need to buy sheet music occasionally.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
New customers enjoy a free first lesson at my home studio in Ogden, UT (281 W 5350 S). This lesson begins with pleasant conversation and discussion about the student's background musical goals and aspirations. We then work through some introductory warm-ups to determine the student's current abilities. Next, students are given some options (based on their interests and needs) to begin or continue their learning and development. Finally, we discuss the studio policy and whether the studio and teaching style are a good fit. If so, a regular day and time is scheduled and lessons proceed accordingly.
