Even with referrals from friends I had difficulty finding a reliable contractor for this particular job, and I needed the work done ASAP. He came out and gave me a quote same day I found him here on Thumbtack. Two days later he came out and completed the work.

Steve was amazing to work with. Very friendly and flexible. He had the best bid of four contractors we looked at. He finished our basement drywall project in less than a week and it looks great. Good quality and matched our texture with the rest of the house.

I recently used Cransten services to repair a hole in my drywall. They work around my busy schedule and got the job done. Cransten Handyman Services did a great choice matching the texture. Great job at all. Highly recommend.

I’ve bought and sold a number of houses and have usually painted them myself so I am very much a perfectionist. When I was selling my last home, I was crunched for time and hired a couple different paint contractors but was very disappointed. I was really nervous about hiring it out for my latest house but Don and his crew were amazing! I hadn’t planned on hiring painters when I bought my new house. When I got the keys though I realized how bad everything looked inside. The walls were old plaster and ugly enough, but the previous owner had pulled down a bunch of built-ins, shelving and art work, leaving holes everywhere! Plus, they had different colors in every room, and very dark colors which made the whole house feel depressing. I HAD to paint this house before moving in and couldn’t do it myself. Don’s crew did ceilings, walls, doors, and trim in the whole house in just 4 days. He wasn’t the cheapest bid, but still very reasonable. And the work was top-quality! I plan on using them again in the Spring to do my exterior. Seriously, pick these guys!

This guy is awesome! He came in and installed my fan within an hour! The best part about this whole thing was he responded to me very quickly when he was running late he let me know. I'm a contractor in Roofing and communication is huge to me! I will be using him for future jobs and also using him for some of my inside work on my own jobs that I get. Keep up the good work and keep your good communication. Anybody who needs a good handyman should hire this guy. Thank you for your awesome work I look forward to doing more business with you in the future!

Jay did a great job repairing our deck. His bid (based on pictures) was lower than the others that came in, and he came out and fixed it quickly so it even came in on the low end of his range. Would definitely work with him again.

Joey was willing to take on a last minute drywall repair job that no one else would. He was on time, very reasonably priced and worked hard while he was there. We were very pleased with his work and highly recommend him to anyone, especially for drywall work!

I am trying to buy a house. The bank appraiser said I needed to have some drywall repair completed within a week before I could close on the property. I got in contact with Brent through thumbtack.com and he completed the repairs 3 days after I first talked to him about the job. This was great for me since I didn't have much time to get the repairs done. The quality of the repairs is fantastic. Brent did a super great job. I would totally hire him again.

Drywall Repair and Texturing I removed a wall and put a 20' beam into the attic which left a very large opening to patch in the middle of my ceiling (20' long x 3' wide). I didn't trust my drywalling skill to make it look right. I had several bids come in on thumbtack and I went with carlos because of his high ratings and was not disappointed. We have plaster walls and ceilings which were tricky to line up but Carlos and his crew did an excellent job and the patching they did is completely invisible. Carlos is a very hard worker and cares deeply about the quality of the work he does. I would hire him again in a heartbeat.

I hired Michael to patch 2 medium-sized holes in my ceiling created when doing some electrical work. He was very responsive, showed up soon after contacting him to take a look at the job, and showed up again a few days later to complete it. He worked with my schedule and quoted me a very affordable price for the job. I'll definitely hire him again for drywall work!

He provided a great price for the work and was able to do it very quickly. I had a very small area of drywall that needed some repair work and he offered a great price and did quality work. He did a good job matching the existing texture so it’s not obvious that there is a patch job there.

Great company and crew!! I highly recommend ACT for any drywall work. Work was performed on a new addition. Ceilings and walls had to be seemed together. After they were finished, it looked like the new addition had always been there.

I had hired another contractor (J & M painting) but he was extremely unprofessional and was changing everything he had promised. I told him he had to do what we had agreed and he just left. So, I found Niagra. Even though Niagara already had jobs, that very day he came to start on my project. And, he charged less, and did even more He is very qualified and I would highly recommend him. In fact. I already have.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
