Michael is both an excellent teacher and an excellent person. While he taught in a group setting, he took the time to make sure we understood everything individually. He taught me ways to learn and practice that really helped me keep developing my Spanish even after he was my teacher, and now I’m majoring in Spanish and plan on it being my career. You can tell he really cares about those he is working with and he is really good at giving positive reinforcement and encouragement. He puts in the time to teach to individuals needs, and he knows what he’s talking about. If you have the chance to work with him you should definitely take it! He really helped me learn and love Spanish.

Thanks to Thumbtack , about 2 months ago I was fortunate to find Blythe for teaching Spanish to my 2 kids (11 & 7 yrs old). We have nothing but great things to say about her. What started of as a once a week lesson for an hr , quick converted into 2 lessons that span over 3 hours per week. Blythe is a fantastic teacher, extremely professional but fun at the same time, engages the kids and teaches through multiple teaching strategies (using games , white boards , charts , conversations and books). She takes time and comes prepared for each lesson she takes. My kids are learning a ton and having fun at the same time. They really look forward to their Spanish lessons every week. Blythe is also very supportive and flexible and is willing to do what it takes to accommodate for schedule conflicts (which are sometimes unavoidable), which is a blessing for every busy parent. We are really happy to have Blythe as our Spanish tutor and have already provided a recommendation to several friends.

If you really are committed to learn Spanish, Alex is the best way to go. I met Alex through one of his former students. If you never been a "home-schooling student" you will feel like that with Alex lol. (In a good way) It will be the best 45-60 minutes investment you can do for yourself. Alex will give quizzes every single week and one exam per month, he will be on time for every class and will expect you to be prepared and have read and studied the assignments he had given you. The cool thing about his classes is that they're never boring. He always comes up with ideas to keep you motivated and cheer you up even when you feel like you suck at learning another language. Alex uses good and effective methods, he speaks proper Spanish. He's from the second best Spanish spoken country (after Spain) You will literally see your improvement within one month. He will teach you grammar on the way. It won't be a communicative Spanish, you will learn professional Spanish to be able to hold a proper conversation and to use for school. Alex is amazing. I'm a current student of his. We do skype lessons now, because I have been relocated due to my military job. Highly recommended. A win-win situation for the students. Great prices and excellent outcome. Keep it up, bro. Vincent A.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
