Over the last few years, we have supplemented various school subjects with tutoring through Sylvan, Zaniac, and Educational Advantage. In terms of math instruction, there is no comparison to the quality and depth of instruction that Pinyi has offered. He does not "skim" over topics or just help finish homework. Your child will have a solid understanding of every topic covered. If there are "gaps" that need attention or review, he will find them! While we have worked with many tutors, Pinyi has been the best by far. --J. Witt

Angela is very patient, she evaluates and creates a work plan for your child’s specific needs, if that is math, spelling, reading, etc. I know that my child works better for Angela than he ever could for me. I have seen my son’s grades, knowledge, and confidence increase since coming to her. As a parent there is no way that you can know everything or know every technique to help your child academically. I am confident in Angela’s expertise, that she can help anyone.

About

As a teacher, it's my job to enable every student to achieve his or her full potential. Every student is different; some students need a small boost, while others need to build from the ground up. I'm very patient and thorough, and I identify and improve areas of weakness while building relationships and making learning fun. I tutor in a wide range of subject areas, but my specialties are Math, Physics, and Study Skills. Many people underestimate the value of teaching study skills; I see many students who have become discouraged because they work hard but lack time management and organizational skills. With a little bit of guidance, these students can see their hard work finally begin to pay off. Whatever your situation may be, I'm here to help. In my experience as a tutor, I've seen some amazing outcomes. I have experience teaching all levels of math, science, study skills, and standardized testing at the college, high school, middle school, and elementary school levels. I'm a certified instructor at Sylvan Learning Center, where I worked for a year in Boston. I have a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a Mathematics minor from the University of Massachusetts. I graduated from the honors college at UMass with top Latin honors (Summa Cum Laude) and a 3.83 GPA. I'm now attending the University of Utah to get my Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering. My math and science students greatly appreciate that I have a practical understanding of how to apply these concepts to research and design, and they enjoy when I'm able to give real-world examples and applications.

About

I have a Bachelor's degree from Utah State University in Elementary Education along with a level 3 math endorsement meaning I am qualified to teach all math levels up to Algebra 2. I am also in Grad school right now working towards my masters of education in Secondary Education. I am currently a middle school teacher with four years of experience. I have experience teaching Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 to grades 6-9. I am located in North Salt Lake and am conducting tutoring sessions in the evening. To avoid scheduling conflicts, I am currently requesting that sessions be held in a centralized, public location. Schedule permitting, I would be willing to travel for tutoring sessions. I am available for short-term or long-term tutoring. However, I feel that long-term tutoring is most effective because this allows me to fully assess the needs of the students I am working with. This also allows me to better solidify concepts and help with questions as they arise. I love teaching math. I also love helping students gain confidence in their own math skills. I am very familiar with the state of Utah's core curriculum and am skilled at teaching those concepts to adolescents. I also have experience working with children; the youngest I have worked with was a seven-year-old elementary student while the oldest was a 25-year old college student working to get their bachelor's degree. I am able to thoroughly adapt my teaching methods depending on the needs of the student I am working with.

About

My passion for mathematics sets me apart. Although I appreciate math's applications, I don't look at it as simply a tool for engineers. Math has a beauty in itself. Like most tutors and teachers, I like that moment when a student finally gets it. When the bulb lights up over their head, we both share a sense of accomplishment

About

I have been raised in the special education world. In many ways I am a "purist" I want what is going to be best for the child. If I know that a particular resource is going to help one child then I will purchase that resource. I am creative and have come up with new techniques, strategies, and interventions that help children who have previously had little to no success. I research many things from special education to motor skills, sensory, speech and language, social, emotional, and behavioral. I have found that everything ties together. The more skills you can target at one time the better chance you have of achieving success for the child. The small success stories. In my teaching career I found that my most challenging students were always my favorite because as they began to make slow and steady progress I was filled with joy. The other reason I love my job is because no 2 days are alike. The students are imaginative, thoughtful, and full of good.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
