Brandon showed up on time, was friendly and professional, and got right to work replacing our kitchen faucet. He was happy to answer questions and explain the process. I would not hesitate to contact him again for any other home repair.

Walt and his guys installed a dishwasher and garbage disposal in our tiny kitchen where there had never been ones before. They did everything--cut out a space in the existing cabinet for the dishwasher, wired everything back to the electrical panel, did the plumbing, etc, and fixed a recently-discovered leak in our sink drain while they were at it! They were totally professional, did great work, and were super flexible as we were trying to get the work done as close to our move-in date as possible!

Steve provided excellent refinishing of my wooden rocking chair frame. He dismantled, stripped it, and re-glued all the joints as was needed; and repainted it with a glossy black paint. He responded quickly with texts and voicemails, and completed the job in 6 days. I would recommend him for re-finishing jobs.

I hired Antonio (Tony) Sanchez from Renaissance Restoration to complete a kitchen renovation this past fall (sorry I did not get around to completing this review sooner!). I did all the demolition, but the job included lights and electrical, plumbing repair, cabinet and counter top install, appliance install, and painting. Tony gave a very reasonable estimate and personally worked on my project with his assistant from start to finish as opposed to having one of his employees complete the job. As he began the job, he soon realized that virtually nothing from the original construction was square (townhouse was built in 1987). However, that did not phase him as he had the skills to adjust making those imperfections unnoticeable in the end. In addition, Tony has skills in most of the trades which meant that he did not have to sub different parts of the job out; he did all the electrical, plumbing and carpentry himself. The best part of my experience working with Tony was that he discussed and explained different options or ways of completing a task to ensure there were no surprises, and I was impressed with his willingness to even teach me a little along the way. He was flexible in allowing me to have a friend install the tile floor and was understanding of my need to stick to a rather tight budget. There are only two comments I could make for overall improvement: cleanliness and timeliness. On a couple of occasions, I had to discard empty food containers and drinks that had been left behind. I attributed this to oversight and could be easily improved by making an effort to clean up the work site after each day of work. Considering it was not a space I was using though, it was not that big of a deal. As for timeliness, the project took longer than expected to complete. However, I know that my involvement did have some impact on the schedule and the fact he was doing the work himself while still managing other jobs is a factor. I would not hesitate to bring Tony in for another project in the future. I am completely satisfied with his work and would recommend him to anyone.

Although we cannot speak of Andrey's repair & refinishing furniture skills because we did not use his services, I can say that he was very responsive, very polite and very thoughtful in all of our communications. His quote was very feasible too.

Christian and his team did a great job on the replacement of bricks and iron railing along steps leading one story up to front door of our townhouse. Original railing was 30 years old, totally rusted, and disconnected from the steps, which made it a serious liability. The team found bricks that matched the shape of the current ones, constructed the railing so it was identical to the original design (required by the HOA) and painted it with three layers of primer/paint to fend off future rust. Project included sanding and repainting an iron gate as well. I am totally pleased with the finished product and will be soon using the 5th Gen Group for another brick project.

I had Shane and Justin build a custom cabinet/entertainment center around my fireplace with the TV mounted already on top of the fireplace. Let me say this that Shane and Justin did an absolutely awesome job custom building these cabinets and installing them. The cabinets look great and I had asked them to trim the edges of the fireplace mantle to give it that flushed look. The end result looks great! the finished product is awesome. I had requested that they built 42 inch cabinets in the base with glass doors for my entertainment equipment to be place within the cabinets. They were able to custom fit everything when I had asked. I also had requested that they built crown molding around cabinets at the top and base board for the bottom. The crown molding in my house is double crown molding and Shane was able to custom make the second crown molding. I am completely satisfied with Shane and Justin's work and I would highly recommend them to anyone who is looking for carpentry work. The price was great the work was perfect and they were able to get all the tiny details complete and accurate. They are very professional in the work they do and keep the work area clean. In addition, they cleaned everything after themselves and left the work area spotless. Thank you Shane and Justin for the great work!

Al sent us a carpenter - Mark - who was great. He was very proficient in his work - and worked basically unnoticed by us - with very little noise and almost no disturbance. He was able to quickly adjust to small difficulties (due to the backing of our cabinets), and finished his job quicker than expected. All around great experience - and would be happy to go with them again. Thanks again, to both Al and Mark!

Yosif renovated an old bath for us. He was a complete pleasure to work with and did excellent work in every respect. Because the bath is old old, with each project, laying a granite floor, redoing the shower plumbing, installing a new sink and cabinetry and putting in a new toilet, there was an issue encountered. Yosif solved all the problems, made significant improvements and produced an excellent result. He keeps his commitments on timing, scheduling and price, and provides excellent value. We have much work to do and are very pleased to have met Yosif.

I hired Alex to do an almost complete makeover of the condo unit I recently bought. He and his team painted every room, gutted and refinished the kitchen and bath, and installed the kitchen appliances. He was so great about maintaining our budget and timeline, picking up materials I chose from all over town, and being patient while we made all the decisions. The results are beautiful! He even expanded my closet into a walk-in without breaking our original budget. We faced a few challenges since the unit is old and not everything that is a current standard size fit or could be installed. Alex came up with creative solutions. In some cases I would have preferred he run them by me before implementing them, but it all turned out for the best. He made himself available to fix minor issues with appliances after the renovation was complete and was very responsive. I would definitely recommend him for future projects.

We want you to know how happy we are with the two projects you completed for us. The built-ins and the TV cabinet are absolutely perfect in both design and construction. We take great pride especially in showing off the TV cabinet which exudes a powerful WOW-factor. ..a very creative design that is more like a work of art than a storage cabinet. You are a true craftsman and a pleasure to work with.

We recently had a complete kitchen remodel and are very happy with the results. We hired Dennis Gillooly of Trimline Construction as the general contractor. We were on a very tight budget and after pricing the options from a local cabinet supplier, Dennis suggested we look at using Ready to Assemble cabinets instead. He explained the various options and helped us with the design, layout, and ordering of these cabinets from an east coast supplier. This saved us more than 50% vs the original quoted cost from the local supplier! We got really nice cabinets at a fraction of the cost. Dennis put these cabinets together, installed them, helped us pick the perfect handles, installed those as well, and completed all the trim work to make the finished job look wonderful. We love our new kitchen – it looks great! We also previously used Dennis Gillooly to finish our 1,200 sq foot basement. Dennis took care of managing everything including the design, framing, drywall, a full bathroom, kitchenette/bar area, a ton of storage closets including a cedar closet and custom shelving, the big recreation room, enclosed office space, new French doors, cutting in new windows in our concrete walls, and he personally installed 1,200 sq feet of engineered wood flooring throughout. We painted the basement ourselves in order to save money and found Dennis very willing to work with us to make such a large project both affordable but also exactly what we wanted.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
