The staff was on time and worked quick to move us from our apartment to our new home. They moved several large awkward pieces and all without any damage. I strongly recommend them to anyone looking for a great moving company at a very reasonable rate.

I had a last minute move due to family issues. After submitting a request in Thumbtack I came across the A-1 Moving Company's quote and they are where a good price so I contacted them and set up the move. The move was done with out any delays or slow lagging to run up my bill. Also nothing was damaged and it was actually completed earlier than expected considering the last time I moved I had a 3 bedroom home and now we where moving a 5 + bedroom home. I highly recommend these movers.

Honest, Reliable, Trustworthy, NO HIDDEN FEES, ZERO DAMAGE, ESTIMATE WAS SPOT ON! I hired the services of Great Nation Movers to facilitate our move into a new house. Moving is a very stressful experience and the last move we undertook, the last moving company I hired was downright awful - causing damage to furniture and walls in the new place, after which I never received my claim check and they blocked my phone calls. BUT - Great Nation Movers were the complete opposite! The three gentlemen showed up on-time. There was no tricks or hidden fees like most moving companies charge. They charge by the hour, with a 4 HOUR total minimum. These three young guys worked very hard to get the move done on time. They even moved some large pieces at the new house that were left behind by the original owner so that I can get rid of them. They were courteous, efficient and definitely what they were doing (they know how to twist and turn furniture to fit through tight spaces, and when they wouldn't fit, they knew how to improvise by carefully going through an extra large window, etc). I HIGHLY recommend you give this company a call if you need moving services. You will NOT be disappointed. Rose and her customer service will not disappoint.

Bede and his helper showed up on time and at the time I asked for. He was very pleasant to deal with up to the day of the move and not aggressive and was very straightforward. This house we were moving from was tricky to maneuver a large dresser around and he did it like a pro. No issues. And in decent time. I'd use him again for another move like this. And and the price was reasonable up front so I didn't have to negotiate or worry.

I contracted with Mr. Welch for moving about 70 boxes to a small trailer. He helped me define the job more accurately and was responsive and fair with a really good price for the service. Though my plans changed for this opportunity, he was gracious and I will most certainly use this company again.

These guys are awesome! Respectful, diligent, professional. They were careful with my things and they were understanding when things didn't go as smoothly as possible (normal during moving) I've moved 3 times and this is my best experience thus far. Not to mention the great rates. I moved from P.G. County to Baltimore and it was a breeze. Do yourself a favour and look no further, these are your guys!

Brandon did a great job on my TV mounting project. He showed up on time and ready to work. He was very knowledgable and pleasant to deal with. His rates are reasonable. He even went with me to home depot to locate a missing part to mount the TV and also called the cable company to troubleshoot my cable TV set up box to fix an issue i was having with picture quality. I am very satisfied with his service and i will definitely hire him and recommend him for future projects. Denis

This company deserves overall a Zero! I hired them to help me move my 1 bedroom apartment from MD to DC. I should have cancelled it from the very beginning when they wanted to charge me extra money for using my credit card vs cash!!?? Moving day: The time for arrival was set for 4 pm. The owner kept on postponing the arrival time with various stories why they were being late. I told them we needed to be at my building by 8pm as that was the end of the moving in time window and the building loading dock was closing at that time. I send several texts and tried calling multiple times to the company. They arrived close to 7 pm. WE arrived at my building late. I had to waste my time looking for a security guard who was kind enough to cooperate with us and let us use another loading dock which was a real hike to my entrance ( another extra hour wasted) . My plants were broken and I feared other items did too. And I was right. I demanded discount for the service and to be also reimbursed for the broken items. we negotiated discount and as I was tired and frustrated i agreed to 15% off. As for the reimbursement, I was told to send them all the photos of broken items and estimated cost. I did. Even after a number of emails and phone calls and almost 2 and a half months after the service, I have not been reimbursed yet. NEVER USE THIS COMPANY. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE

This was one of my easiest moves to date, and I've moved all over about once every other year for 10 years! Unfortunately, I injured my knee and wasn't able to do much moving, but Moving With US was so quick, they moved me in less time than I had previously encountered (with me helping). The truck was huge and they had additional packing materials for my large glass desk and TV's. They are very responsive and will provide you with great service. I will be recommending them to all of the neighbors in my new community.

The team arrived promptly, immediately got to work moving each piece of furniture carefully, and always asking if the placement was exactly how I wanted it. Vlady and Petro had such a positive attitude and really wanted us to be pleased with the changes in our home and their service. They removed excess furniture which was no longer needed.

I hired Gary of GNG Services 5/24/2018 to remove a old 2-piece sectional. I needed to have the sectional removed ASAP. Gary informed me that he would be busy that day, but could come to my home by a specified time late that day. Gary let me know when he was on his way-- which I appreciated for me to make preparations for his arrival. Gary was trustworthy, courteous and worked expeditiously. I would highly recommend Gary.

I am very appreciative for the work bone by the moving team. All transaction went well. I had quite a few stuff to move and was worried that a moving company will charge a lot for the work. After screening reviews and comparing prices, decided to go with Newray moving. Staff was friendly and quickly sent me the quote. After agreeing to it, she scheduled my move. Guys arrived on time (by the way manager gave me a call day before the move to confirm the move and ask me if I need extra boxes and other staff). The movers worked diligently but in a good pace but it took them longer given I had couple large dressers that need to be accurately moved since it had fragile mirror door. They packed them well and were able to get it downstairs from second floor without a scratch. The total hours were slightly higher then estimated but given I saw how they work I was fine with it. I highly recommend this moving company, team is really devoted to their job.

Pick Up Movers handled our last move very professionally. They gave us a very reasonable quote which they stuck to in the end. The movers were great. They packed up all our belongings in no time and then loaded everything onto the truck. They were quite literally in and out of our house on the moving day. They delivered everything on time and I was glad to see that none of our things suffered any damages. The movers even helped us unpack and assemble the furniture. It really turned out to be the easiest move possible.

I had a last minute emergency at work and needed to move an item from one office building to the other as to not hold up a deal. I contacted all the well known companies (jk moving, collegehunks, etc.). Everyone was booked. I came on here and Ken was very responsive. Sent the addresses, he arrived within an hour of the original request. The item was transported quickly and free of damage. He was also extremely courteous and understanding. I could only choose 3 highlights, but I was satisfied across the board. I would certainly recommend his services and use him again in the future. Thank you Ken.

I had one very heavy armoire I wanted moved from downstairs to upstairs. My three Bellhops showed up on time and they were very friendly and courteous. My armoire is big, heavy, and awkward and they had to navigate a curve with railings and a low ceiling area as they carried it upstairs. They were as careful as they could be with it. They were great and I will definitely recommend Bellhops Moving to my family and friends! Thank you.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
