Highly recommend! Ramone and Jimmy power washed our house exterior; power washed, sealed our deck and driveway, fixed some door trims, replace and painted some moldings. Ramone had to go through several places to find the molding with the right width. They went through several times to make sure the deck was clean. They work hard and no complain. Also they are very friendly. We will definitely do business with them again.

I would highly recommend Rae's Masonry for a project at your home or business.  When I called about an estimate,  Mr. Rae personally came to my home to assist me in designing my project, which consisted of repairing/replacing the bricks and slate on my front porch; building new steps and a walkway; and putting cobblestone pavers aside my driveway.  His estimate was very reasonable; which helped me stay within my project budget.  My neighbors were impressed by the craftsmanship and speed of his workers' performance. The brick masons were professional and and courteous by keeping the onsite materials organized and cleaned up their work area. They used quality materials that will keep my home looking beautiful for years to come. Masonry construction may be a lost art form to some,  but i believe it adds a classic, authentic feel to a home. Masonry unequivocally is the best choice for any home because it never goes out of style.  When I visited Shade and Wise Brick Company to choose my bricks, the representatives spoke highly of my contractor and said that Rae's Masonry would do a great job on my project. This gave me an extra comfort that this company would do a great job! Give Rae's Masonry a chance to turn your vision into reality!

Paul does tremendous work at an incredibly fair price. Paul and his crew paved a new expanded driveway and walkway at my house, and it looks pristine. Additionally, he charged half as much as other companies around Richmond that I received estimates from. I highly recommend Paul; I doubt you will find anyone with a better price that will match the quality of Paul's work.

After soliciting several other paving company’s in the area, Josh and his team were by far the most affordable. As someone who deals with contractors on a regular basis, the lower costs are usually indicative of one of two things. They are not very good, or they have perfected a process and are passing the saving along to their customers. After meeting Josh for the first time, I was confident that the latter was most likely the case. From the initial free cost estimate to the completion of the work, Josh was professional throughout and had even implemented a solution to help keep the water from draining towards my house; an existing problem since we first bought it. Despite my kids having gotten used to the bumpy ride from all of the ruts in our driveway, they have enjoyed their big wheels adventure on our newly covered road. Thanks so much guys!

Henry's has been great to work with! They were able to hop on our project much quicker than we were anticipating and even offered to uproot the small trees/bushes that needed to be removed prior to having our driveway paved. They also managed to finish the job in less than a day! It was great to go to work and come back to a paved driveway. Our neighbors even commented on how quick they were in and out and yet they still managed to do such a great job. My only complaint is the little bump at the end of our driveway that seems a little rough at certain angles. This is the smallest little hiccup though, and I have no problem recommending Henry's in the future. Thanks guys!

Oscar and the Williamsburg Construction Landscaping Company are really good. We had to wait for them a couple of weeks to start because they had other projects, but Oscar communicated that with us from the very beginning and really did an amazing job on our yard (in a timely manner) once they started here. He came with CREATIVE ideas, which we needed, and he went above and beyond what we expected. Before they finished, we asked him to do another couple of jobs like installing a railing for the front steps and screening-in our back porch and he was willing and able to help us. Such a talented group of guys! Within about a week, we finally have a nice front lawn/driveway and finished brick patio that we've been trying to get finished for 2 years! We'd recommend him to any one- big or small jobs.

Luke from Asphaltworx, provided a clear and very reasonable estimate of work to be performed. He and his crew arrived as planned, and did a very professional resurfacing of our driveway.

I could not have been more pleased with the work of the Custom Landscape Services Crew that completed several services with my landscaping before placing my house on the market. We had a tree stump that needed to be ground up and removed, several flower and mulch beds that were clean out and completely made-over with beautiful flowers, plants and fresh mulch of course. They also planted 5 trees between my driveway and the neighbor's house (which was an eyesore to look at). The trees did the trick! From the first initial meeting with Chris to discuss options for service, I knew he was very knowledgeable, professional and courteous, and the company we wanted to work with. At first glance, prices on the estimate seemed a bit higher than I assumed they would be, but after doing my own research soon realized rates were appropriately quoted and competitive within the market. However, the service and completed project amazed me and at that point I felt as if I had gotten a huge discount. haha. TOTALLY WORTH IT!! I just wish I still had my pictures to share with others. I would recommend Custom Landscape Services to anyone looking for basic lawn care needs AS WELL AS custom landscaping projects for any improvements and upgrades to their property. You will not be disappointed! I continue to be a loyal customer and lean on CLS for anything I need done on the outside of the walls of my home.

The company fixed a sinkhole in my driveway and did some paving after the repair. They were punctual, neat, and very pleasant to work with on this project. There was a little challenge in getting the estimate appointment set up but that was only a minor hiccup.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
      • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
      • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
      • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
      • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
      • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

      What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time.
