Jeremy Ashley, the owner of A Squared Pro Services, completed kitchen remodeling work at my home (as well as other miscellaneous jobs). The quality of the work was excellent and well done. He was respectful of my time and my home (i.e., showed up as promised and worked continuously until the work was completed; cleaned up any debris that resulted from the work, etc.). I “shopped around” and talked to many other companies prior to selecting A Squared Pro Services to complete the job. His prices were very reasonable. I was extremely pleased with the work and I’m looking forward to doing business with this company for any future needs.

Chris helped us dis-assemble and remove equipment and furnishings from a store location into a moving truck. He was on time, prepared, friendly, and also did not complain when the work took longer than anticipated. He provided a helper as well and the helper had a great attitude. Both were very careful and took direction well.

Corey has been in the process of transforming our house. Corey brings not only a strong artistic flair, but she also listens well and draws out the common goals for the design work, so we are all playing to the same script. She creates a vision for the house or room and then works hard to make it happen. Our formal piano room looks heavenly now that she painted the ceiling like a sky and added just the right lighting, candles, and accessories. The area rug she picked for our family room transformed the room. The recommendations she made for our screened porch turned it into an extension of the house and a thing of beauty. We are now enjoying parts of our house much more than before because of Corey's work. I strongly recommend Corey Hicks as a very talented, artistic home designer.

I hired Jacob to install an attic fan in the roof of my home. Jacob's response time on Thumbtack was lightning fast, and he was genuinely interested in gaining my business. His price estimate was extremely fair and he and his crew did a wonderful job of installing the fan. Jacob and his crew were polite, respectful and worked VERY HARD in the heat to get the job done in a timely manner. I HIGHLY recommend Jacob for any handyman project you may have. Outstanding job, guys... Keep up the good work!!!

Alex did a great job with my home remodel. I didn't have a lot of space and I wasn't sure what could be done with it, but she made great use of the space I did have and made my home beautiful all while staying within my budget. Very professional and creative. Highly recommend!

I provide services in home staging that are all centered around the home buying and selling experience. A home stager helps prepare your home for sale for the top dollar and show potential buyers how their things and life can look in your home. I have ten years of experience. I work with realtors and sellers. Please visit my website: edgehomestaging.com for more information. I work in Greensboro area, Raleigh area, and Wilmington. I absolutely am honored to help people move on to the next phase or stage of their lives by helping them prepare their homes for sale (staging to sell) or helping redesign their environment (staging to dwell) for the next step. As an extension of this work, I also assist i paint color selection, and next-stage living in place. Since 2003, I have worked as a stager part-time, and now have been able to devote full time to this work. I am very quick and thorough, working smoothly with realtors, contractor/flippers, and homeowners in residences with or without existing furnishings. Please let me know how I may serve you! In your case, if you could send me three photos of each room (stand in one place near entry door of that room and take a left view, center view and a right view from your one stance), I might be able to write up a consultation which would be a room-by-room to-do list for you to complete. That cost will be $250. If you want me to travel to your house, that fee would be $100 more. I’d love to do this project with you. I did one just like this situation in FL and the house sold in less than 2 weeks after lingering for 6 months on the market. In your case, I need to see the property for a quick walk-through, assess the buyer pool and their likes and dislikes/expectations, and then write a proposal. Do you want to rent furniture from me? Do you want me to buy furniture for your use in another home? We can get these questions answered quickly, I'm sure. Initial fee is $150 to come to the property. Then, if you choose me as your stager, this fee can be absorbed into my estimated price. Thank you! -Carol at EdgeHomeStaging.com.

I have over 40 years of experience in home remodeling and new home construction. I have references and photos.

I am just starting out. I have an eye for color but I just completed an interior design class at Durham Tech. Other classes are coming up and I will take them to learn more. I want to be a stager and decorator.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
