This was our first long distance move and we were so happy we found Dulles Logistics and Rentals through thumbtack, they are amazing. We were done earlier than we expected becuse of them. They made sure with every piece of furniture they packed and every box they moved was labled and properly packed. Max Khana the head of the company gave me quote and was clear in explaining and how they will work and how the movers will take care of stuff things were done properly and with full customer satisfaction. The movers called us one hour before to give us heads up and they were there on time. Day before the move we called Max to ask him if they can provide us the wardrobe boxes and next morning 5 boxes brand new were delivered 4 hours before the movers came with the truck. We are so happy the way they worked kept showing us things before packing did the packing of furniture the way we wanted it. They were on time as told by them and next day the truck arrived on time at the new place. Extremly satisfied with them will always recomend to all friends and family and those reading the review in DC/VA for moving.

Baku Moving was easily accessible during entire process via email or phone. They did a great job moving our belongings within a very short notice. I contacted them and asked for a price. Their manager thoroughly explained how the moving would go and gave me the estimate based on the information I gave. It was very reasonable. The movers were on time and got to work quickly. The movers were great at the packing service- all the boxes were marked and easily found upon arrival. Everything arrived in the same condition as it left. I had a really stress-free move with these guys.

Zebna is a great moving company. They were clear and consistent with their pricing and provided great value compared to other moving companies. I was impressed that they agreed to deliver my belongings for an interstate move (Maryland to North Carolina) within one day. They arrived within 30 minutes of the promised window for the pick-up and delivered on the day promised. I was particularly impressed with the two movers who delivered my belongings and reassembled my furniture efficiently with friendliness and good humor. I do recommend packing your own belongings if you hire this company or hiring a separate professional packing service. They are great movers but not professional packers.

We hired SkyRide Moving and Storage to move the furniture of a small condo, for a move that we were coordinating. They were competitively priced vs. the others we contacted. All in all it was a successful move, but it almost unraveled when the morning of the move one of their trucks wouldn't start. We called to ask for an ETA and was told by Fred, the owner, that the crew couldn't get the truck started and that their arrival would be delayed until 1:30. As this delay wouldn't work for us, Fred rented a UHaul and arrived at 11:00 with a helper and conducted the move themselves. He waived his moving fee because of the delay, but we opted to reimburse him for the truck rental and tipped both him and his helper, since they went above and beyond to make sure we had a successful move. They were professional in their interactions and treated the items with care, packing the truck well. I will call SkyRide again for a small local move.

My experience was very positive. Brandon did a great job assembling my IKEA sleeper sofa. He showed me how it worked and he disposed of all the packing materials. Plus, his bid was much more affordable that some of the other Thumbtack vendors. I would definitely use 1st Home Professional for future jobs. Highly recommended.

I had a terrific experience with your ProMovers. Terrence and his team did an excellent job moving us from DC to Atlanta. Terrence met with me ahead of the move and provided me with a quote based on my specific needs, no hidden costs or extra charges. Communication with him before during and after the move was great as he is super responsive. One of the great advantages of hiring Terrence is that you know he will be the one packing, loading, driving and unloading at your destination. One thing that really impressed me was that Terrence stayed with us after unloading helping us get set in our new home and only left after he confirmed our satisfaction with everything that had to do with the move. Hands down the best moving experience I ever had!

Initially, they came one hour late, with calls to advise in advance. I have to call at the owner, twice, until i got answer. The crew were responsible packing the staff and delivery. They offer 3 hours plus 2 men, but it took 4 hours, for one bedroom area.

I mean the guys came a little before time and showed concerns for my stuff, I was overwhelmed with packing, when they got here I was not done packing yet. Needless to say, they took over packing, loading the truck and helping me to find a cleaning company at the end. I like how they used the furniture pads to wrap my precious furniture and carried them away with extra care. Po's crew were very professional, caring and strong. They finished the work on time and he charged me a very reasonable fee. At the end of the day, I am very satisfy with the service that Po's moving provides and I will highly recommend them to anyone moving.

Working with JD has been a pleasure. He was prompt. He took care of the packing in a very short time. I was so sure that it would take over eight hours or so. He did everyting in less than half that time. He fees are 2nd to none. Excellent price for all of the work that was done! I would recommend him to all of my friends and will surely call on him for all related work going forward. Tim

What did I like about them? Everything! We hired them to help us finish packing and moving the chaotic remnants of a pack and move from three days earlier. The first movers didn’t finish. VKH Movers came in, got right to work, were super cooperative and friendly, and were available with less than 12 hours notice! They went above and beyond, carrying trash to the curb, bagging mattresses, and I wish I had hired them first!

Evans and Teddy were fantastic! They arrived early to start packing up my stuff. They finished packing and loading up the van quickly and carefully. They then were able to move my stuff in without a loading dock within a half hour. Whole experience was about 2.5 hours. They were professional, friendly, and incredibly helpful (even fixing my bookcase which was broken before they came)! I will definitely use EZ Movers again for my next move.

I cannot say enough great things about our experience with Mike and his team. They responded to a request the night before we needed to start packing, and showed up the next morning ready to work! It was amazing to watch how carefully and quickly they packed everything! After a full day of packing, Mike again made his team available to help the next day and showed up first thing in the morning to pack the rest of the house. Day three, they loaded everything into our storage pods in record speed. The price for this last minute, hard working crew was extremely reasonable and the value we received was worth every penny! Get Helpers are flexible, hard working, reliable and really good at what they do! I will definitely be hiring them again!

I needed about a minivan full of stuff moved from Baltimore to Philadelphia, and Gary was with me every step of the way. He has a few different cars he uses, which allowed him to give me a fairer price than if he used a big truck. He was very responsive in setting up a preliminary call and then updating me on his progress from Baltimore to Philadelphia. If I had to do a similar long-distance move in the future, I would totally use GNG Services again.

Jennifer of Errand Works is amazing. I hired her to assist me with prepping my house for sale. In one day we were able to clean an organize the kitchen cabinets and drawers, pantry, laundry room and hall closets. I was so impressed with the care she took to wrap and pack items being stored. Jennifer is easy to get along with, friendly, trustworthy, and dependable. She worked independently and then side-by-side with me to help me stay on task without being pushy. Well worth the money, I have already hired her again. I will also have Jennifer assist me with packing the house when it sells.

I am SO impressed by the recent packing services I received from Cliff and Rob. I was frantically looking for someone to help me pack for an upcoming move, and Cliff made the process so easy. They were easy to schedule with, punctual, flexible, efficient, and friendly. They did such a good job and made packing for a move, somehow an enjoyable experience. I have moved several times in the last few years and have yet to come across such an easy and efficient process. Sounds like they offer basically any service you can think of (packing, moving, hanging, etc) so if you need anything - I recommend these guys!!!!

I had a great experience with Candace. Although she didn't have much experience with Tiny Houses, I appreciated that she listened to what I had to say and applied her extensive knowledge about organizing to my project. We had a minor glitch with cabinet sizes and this got resolved. I would be happy to recommend Candace to others needing her services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
