Tony Tan did an excellent job on the bathtub drain repair he did for me on 10/29/2013. He texted me within 15 minutes of the posting of my request and arrived within an hour to assess the situation and begin the repair. He had to replace the badly leaking drain pipe which was complicated by very old plumbing and a tight crawl space. Tony did this work efficiently and competently and charged a very fair price. I will definitely call Tony Tan again for future jobs!

Nick came out to me in Dupont Circle even though it was Labor Day. He was prompt, polite and very professional. He repaired faucets in the kitchen and two bathrooms. He also fixed leaky bathtub and shower heads. Finally he determined where there was a leakage in my dishwasher. I checked his work and the problems were corrected. When we were missing a part, he found an open hardware shop and got there and back in no time. I appreciate his work and would use him again for any plumbing work.

It was a simple repair of a pipe for a new shower installation, and he did it quickly and properly. While here, he also discovered a mistake that a previous plumber had made (they had forgotten to solder a joint) and checked the rest of their work to make sure they hadn't messed anything else up.

We needed to have a shower door installed. This was the last item in a larger home remodel project. We asked the team who did the remodel but their price was higher than we were willing to pay at this point. We got a couple of other quotes which were all over the place. I had used thumbtack only once previously but never hired anyone. I thought I'd give it a try. Randy gave us a good quote that we were satisfied with. He didn't have any reviews on thumbtack so we were hesitant, but he provided references and explained that he just joined thumbtack. I spoke to a pro poetry manager and she praised Randy's work saying that he does all the work on their many properties. We have it a shot. We exchanged a couple of emails and phone calls prior to the actual work day. We weren't sure which door to order but with his advice we finally got it and scheduled the installation. Randy's worker was very prompt and thorough. The shower stall have him some trouble since it was porcelain tile, but he managed to get the screws in. Unfortunately the instructions for the door were confusing and the final few steps weren't done properly. I wasn't home when the installation was finished but when I returned and noticed it didn't look right I called the door manufacturer and they explained what was wrong. I called Randy who was very accommodating and his worker came the next morning and fixed the issue. They were both curteous. In the end we got the door installed within our budget. Our work in the house is complete now, but if we need anything else done in the future I will certainly ask Randy again for a quote.

Fixed a leak in my tub that damaged the ceiling below. I have fixed this issue 3 times prior or so the professionals said. He diagnosed the issue quickly. Went to get the supplies and fixed it in no time. He was nice and allowed my questions and skepticism. He promised to take care of the issue and he did. Great job, wonderful person. And most of all his price was reasonable. No hidden fees no add on, I paid what he quoted. He didn't try to find something else for me to pay for.

I had an office in my basement that I decided to rip out the carpet in and install wood-like porcelain tiles. Leo and his assistant worked diligently for two days to transform my room. They installed the tiles in a herringbone design and they a phenomenal job with it. He then removed my 3 inch baseboards and installed & painted 6 inch baseboards. And painted the walls. I am beyond happy with the results and will DEFINITELY use LD Home Improvement on my next project.

I hired Matt to take out old tub liners and replace with tile. He reached out to me very quickly and began work a few days later. It ended up being a much bigger job as he had to remove moldy walls and hang new ones before tiling. Matt volunteered to work Sat and Sun to compete the job quickly in 2 1/2 days. He was always right on time in the morning and more than professional! Explained every step of the process to me and gave me a good price on the extra work. Super guy with many years experience in tiling. I would/will absolutely hire him again!

My highest recommendation to Jon Drew! He replied immediately to my inquiry (on a Sunday afternoon!), and was on his way within the hour. He investigated the problem thoroughly, explained what was needed to repair my serious kitchen drain problem, and then did immaculate and highly effective work to correct it. He even checked the entire pipe system and gave me invaluable information regarding maintenance and future repairs. All this for a ***VERY REASONABLE SERVICE COST***. I am extremely happy with his work, and found him to be both highly professional and quite personable to deal with. He has earned a loyal customer in me, and I will not hesitate to call him for all my home plumbing needs in the future. 5 STARS!!

Ricky came to the house, gave us an estimate and started the job immediately. He was able to change out the hardware for our spa tub and change the connections on the pipe to ensure a secure fit. Once the job was completed he walked us through exactly what was done and cleaned up after himself (including the inside of the tub). Our tub looks beautiful!!!

Alcon has done two jobs for me: create and build a closet that looks like it was always part of the room and replace wood floors with beautiful porcelain tile. The workmanship was excellent and the projects were completed in a timely fashion. The cost was extremely fair. I highly recommend Alcon!!!

Tim and team did a great job changing out my old shower and tub tiles as well as the shower pan and putting in new modern cement pan and lovely wall tiles. Tim is super responsive, kind, and reasonable. He truly cares about delivering quality work. Only left one star off due to a few set backs we had with scheduling. He has a team of people and there was some trouble with scheduling on a few days, setting back my finish date.

Sam has made our experience in choosing a contractor so easy and effortless! We were originally planning on a simple bathtub reglaze in order to save money, however, Sam shed his expertise on the pros and cons and worked with us on our budget so that we have decided to move forward with a whole tub/tile remodel. He has been very responsive and proved his professionalism. Looking forward to getting the job started! Photos will be shared after!

Yosif combined an existing bathroom and two closets to make a larger, completely remodeled bathroom. This project required closing off an existing door and removing a short wall. He worked with us to come up with three different remodeling options, and after we chose the option we liked best he completely demolished the 1941-era existing bathroom, removed the debris, and completed the installation of the new bathroom, including new flooring, tiled walls, a walk-in shower, a tub, a double vanity, commode, and medicine cabinets. He covered over the unwanted doorway and painted the new bathroom. In some cases, he worked with other technicians when needed. He also arranged for frameless glass doors to be installed as a shower surround. The result is truly stunning! It exceeds our highest expectations. Yosif's tile work is meticulous. He laid the marble floor tile in a beautiful herringbone pattern and created custom-designed niches in the shower and tub areas. Everything, from the lighting to the flooring to the smallest detail, was handled with professionalism and skill. Yosif completed the work to the highest standards, and we are delighted to recommend him.

Steve did a great job renovating my house. My house was a disaster when I bought it, but now it's beautiful! He replaced my carpet, flooring, deck, and siding. He installed new windows, a kitchen countertop, 3 sinks, & a toilet. I can't wait for him to start on my new bathroom tub & tile! Next year he will be replacing my kitchen cabinets. Impressive work!

Paul was wonderful to work with. We had several small projects that just sort of spiraled out of control for us. We are new home owners, and everything just started piling up: doors that needed to be squared and re-hung; cabinets we wanted installed; painting that kept being put off; stair railings that needed to be redone; and the list kept getting bigger! Paul took over and finished everything at a reasonable price with no hassle. Everything got done and my husband and I are headache free from all those little projects! Thank you Paul & Sweet Home Remodeling and Repair for getting our new home back in order!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.
