When a company has 5 stars it automatically makes me suspicious because so many companies are paying for reviews. With that said, Woodland Outdoor's team deserves every star of this review. First of all, they came over 3 times to work with us on the design of our patio, talk about our options, and make us feel 100% comfortable with the project. When the team showed up they were extremely professional. All of the crew introduced themselves and shook our hands. They worked from 7 AM - 4PM each day with few rests. Everyone was constantly working, and working hard. Our patio, landscaping, and garage pullout turned out beautifully. We could not be more happy. We highly recommend Scott and his entire crew. If you need a reference, contact us, it will be glowing.

I have worked with Mark Barrett, owner of Top Notch General Contracting for almost 10 years. He has basically redone my entire home...from exterior doors and windows, gutting and remodeling baths, removing a fireplace and reworking the roof, and much more! He has gutted and installed a brand new kitchen at my Mom's home and completed work at many of my real estate client's homes. Top Notch contractors are particularly excellent carpenters and drywall installers, but they can do any job you need. Mark is timely and does what he says he is going to do. If a subcontractor does not do a job right, Mark will redo it himself until you are satisfied. I will not work with anyone but Top Notch!

Shaun did the backsplash for our kitchen. He was professional, and did the work himself. My wife and I couldn't be happier with the backsplash. Shaun truly is a perfectionist with his work and it shows in the outstanding results. I highly recommend Strictly Backsplash for anyone in the Hampton roads area. Thanks Shaun!

Don has now handled two projects for me, one large and one smaller, but has done excellent, professional work on both. His kitchen granite and tile work was fabulous, and he installed new entry way and patio doors for me. Timely, cost-effective and professional all the way!

I'm so happy with the both projects Josh did for me. I have had a lot of contractors in and out while trying to get back to normal after a flood and by far Josh has been the most professional and friendliest person I have had the pleasure of working with. He is punctual and reliable and really made me feel like it was a partnership. He kept me up to date on how things were going and let me know if he came across any issues. He came up the designs for my kitchen and pantry and they turned out better than I ever imagined. The finished projects are so awesome they look like they were built with the house. He is a skilled carpenter and really takes the time to make sure the project is done to perfection. He cuts materials on site, cleans up after himself and works diligently to get the job done quickly. He respected my home and never left a speck of dust or debris anywhere. It was so refreshing working with him and I will certainly call him for our next project.

We were very pleased with the work completed by VIP. They were prompt and fair with their estimate. There were no surprises and the tile project in our kitchen and breakfast nook turned out beautifully. The project was kept neat and orderly throughout the several days it took to lay the tile and both gentlemen we worked with were very friendly and conscientious. We will definitely use VIP again on any future projects!

I hired JB Designs to do our kitchen remodel. They were clean dependable and on budget. Our designer ,Suzanne Sofield, was & is extremely helpful and worked with my wife with color, cabinent and appliance selection. She followed up in every area to make sure we got the best deals possible.. The work was so well performed that a quarter of the way through the project we added our family room to the job. They performed this work once again on time & on budget. . The crew were professional and clean. We would hire this company again.

Locally owned business and very experienced carpenters! WoodFellas created an amazing island for our kitchen and we could not be happier with it. Because of the size, they delivered to our home and installed it...even thought ahead to bring felt pads so it won't scratch our hardwood floors. Love that we were able to "shop local" and now have a beautiful piece of furniture that will last forever.

Rodney Daniels completed and perfected an unfinished granite tile job in my kitchen. He added bull nose tile and grouted it beautifully. Prior to his work, my kitchen looked unfinished and the existing DIY project was average at best. Rodney made it perfect! It looks great and I am no longer feel like I have to explain the unfinished, unprofessional looking tile in my kitchen. I strongly recommend hiring DK Paragon Custom Builders for any home improvement or renovation tasks. They do excellent work at very reasonable prices and are very professional as well.

I hired Virginia Kitchens (The IKEA Installer for Hampton Roads) to install my IKEA kitchen and what a great choice. From design to finish they were in constant communication. I am so glad I decided to give them the job when my order had arrived and it was 146 boxes. But on the first day they sorted through the boxes and had everything organized and within an hour had cabinets already built. I am so happy the way the kitchen turned out and thank Virginia Kitchens for all the hard work.

Mark and his team cut and constructed an inside stairwell to our basement. (Previously the only access point was via and outdoor stairway.) We feel they did an excellent job,---very professional, kept the work site clean, they had a very small 'window' of space to work within and therefore "measured 3 times and cut once!!"---thorough, competent and very well designed, constructed and finished. I would definitely recommend their services.

David at DAW remodeled various parts of my house including redoing the bathroom, installing wood floors, tile work, backsplash in the kitchen, and painting. He does quality work and is very reliable. What I particularly liked about David is that he also has a great design sense. He recommended some terrific ideas I never thought of and the end results were better than I ever expected. He is very clean and doesn't leave a messy trail where ever he goes. He finishes the job completely and you don't have to clean up after him. I will have David work on my next house because he is easy to work with and is knowledgeable about all aspects of remodeling including plumbing, electricity and design. I highly recommend him for whatever type job you have. He can do anything.

It is with great pleasure we are writing this review for an outdoor project on our property in Williamsburg done by Melllis Custom Carpentry. We live on a tidal creek leading to the James River and we wanted a walkway that would stretch from the bottom of our deck stairs to a creekside kayak put-in. The path would follow a sloping dirt path through trees and shrubs. We interviewed several companies including Mellis Custom Carpentry and were immediately impressed with Adam Mellis, the owner. He grasped our vision for the walkway and was able to articulate a number of ways to accomplish it. We would have liked a stone pathway but because we were concerned about the tree roots that would have to be cut to build the base Adam suggested a raised wood walkway. He sketched out a preliminary design which would have concrete piers with wood support beams attached. The walkway deck would be laid over joists going from beam to beam. The walkway would curve through the woods. Adam’s price was competitive and reasonable and we agreed to move forward. Adam didn’t cut corners. All his work was inspected and approved by the appropriate James City County inspectors. James City County requires special hardware on parts of the framing to guard against hurricane damage. Adam did more than required, explaining that it would enhance the security but also lead to a more solid product—and it did! After work had begun we decided that we would like to have edging on the walkway and Adam suggested using 2 x 10s that would be bolted to the supporting beams. He would use clamps to bend the lumber to follow the curve of the walkway. It took a lot of work for Adam but the curves look so nice and natural. For the amount of work involved, the time taken to complete the project was reasonable. Adam would keep us informed if he would be delayed. Susan, in the office, was very pleasant to deal with. She quickly sent “Paid” invoices after I had paid the various agreed-upon draws during the contract period. Adam was meticulous in his workmanship. We saw him cutting tapers into deckboard after deckboard so that they would produce an esthetically pleasing curve. If the curve didn’t look right to him he would redo it. The end product was magnificent. People who have seen it are very impressed. After the James City County inspector ended his final inspection he told us that the walkway “looked like it should be in a National Park.” Without reservation we recommend Mellis Custom Carpentry for your next project.

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

      What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

      • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
      • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
      • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
      • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.

Be sure to check out our smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.
