I hired Tony Tan to completely renovate a small bathroom. It involved removing everything in the room (down to the beams and starting new.....removing tub, creating easier to enter shower, re-tiling, new vanity, toilet, shelves and fixtures. I also hired him to replace my air conditioner (outdoor component/compressor) for central air unit. The inside heating unit did not require replacement. The living area and a hallway were repainted following the bathroom remodeling. As a surprise to me, Tony installed a new ceiling fan (with dimmer light and remote) in my living area. A number of miscellaneous repairs such as installing blinds, fixing doorbell, replacing a fallen brick and a segment of siding that had worked lose, installing kitchen lights etc., were all completed as part of the overall project. I have asked for estimates on building a deck and replacing roofing on a shed......plan to use Tony and his crew to have this work done a bit later. Tony bases his prices on the amount of labor he expects a job to require, and includes prices for contractor grade paint, supplies etc. If you choose to upgrade on tile, fixtures, floors etc. you get the extra charge. If you want to go to Habitat and get surplus items at a reduced charge (I bet he'd use those to help you economise), although I didn't actually ask. He's just the kind of guy who listens to what you say you want, tries to find reasonable options that work for you, and does his best to make it happen, while earning a fair income. I hired in early March 2017, expecting the work to be completed while I was vacationing with my family the second week of April. Tony sent pictures or videos of the work done each day. He texted when his people were in the house and when they left for the day. The bathroom project had a firm beginning and ending date and deadlines were met. My only suggestion for improvement would be this: set a deadline for when the total project will be finished. The weather affected the timeliness of my fence repair, and my very demanding work schedule added some challenges. Also, Tony works on multiple jobs simultaneously and this means big jobs can become the priority and the finishing of smaller tasks can be postponed a little longer than is necessary. Still, I am very pleased with the improvements to my property and plan to hire for future projects.

Keith did an outstanding job constructing our shadowbox style fence. From first contact to install, it took less than a week. He responded promptly to all of my questions via email and text. I would highly recommend him to others and will reach out to him again for any future projects. My neighbors even commented to me that they were impressed with the quality of work and pace at which he worked. They wished they had used Keith for their fencing project.

I had searched on Thumbtack for a handyman who could repair a deck. I received a response from the owner "Howard" within minutes of posting the request. He booked the appointment for the very next day, had the quote to me that evening and the job was scheduled and completed within 3 days of the quote. Wow, how is that for responsiveness. Howard was very professional and knowledgeable in his field. Definitely not a hard sell, his prices were reasonable and he was willing to negotiate. He repaired and stained my deck and it looks fabulous! He did an excellent job and I will be using him to make some stairs and powerwash/paint my fence. I highly recommend Howard and his company Bullen Brothers. His business card will be readily accessible for all my future repair needs. Thank you so much Howard I truly appreciate you!

Kenny and Luke did a great job on a large hedgerow and other shrubs on my corner lot property (owning a corner lot is a whole different world when it comes to dealing with City ordinances). They also diagnosed potential problems with my gutters, fencing, and other shrubbery that we weren't even aware of. I was amazed at how quickly they got the job completed. I would recommend this company 100%.

When I tell you my universe is amazing!!! I've always talked about having a nice tall privacy fence so that Tyla and our pups can have space to run around and play in without us having to worry about them running into the streets or who may be watching them... We shopped around and prices were $4500+...well I ended up going on Thumbtack and listed my project and had companies/contactor bid on it. Our guy gave us a quote of $3500 which I was already excited about but then we ended up having to push it off due to other important expenses that came up. However, after the morning where our older dog, Zoey, decided to run into the street to chase after a SUV 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ & then crossing right in front of it (Thank GOD there was a stop sign so the SUV had to slow down), I went back to message our fence guy, Justin, and asked him how much would it cost for a chain link fence (it wasnt at all our top choice but it was better than nothing). Justin proceeded to ask me respectfully whether my change of heart was due to cost related or did I truly just want a chain link - I told him the reason why & then he shared the long term benefits of getting vinyl vs wood or chain link and NOT once did he come off pushy nor impatient during our discussion and even after told me he will be happy to give me an estimate for the vinyl vs chain link. IN ADDITION to that without even looking at your yard yet in person, he said he can possibly do it for no more than $2500 which was him going out on a limb. When I saw that number, I surely thought he was talking about just for the material but nope that's how much we ended up paying for everything. He shared with me that he has a passion for his work and isn't like other businesses who may just be after the money so of course they're going to up sell which I appreciated. Justin had our best interest at heart & he showed it in his work & customer service!! He and his ONE other partner came out yesterday around 3pmish & didn't leave until they got the job done which was around 9:30ish. We are truly grateful & appreciate for Justin & his partner who made our dream of a nice white privacy fence come true at a price where we didn't have to file bankruptcy! If you are in the market for a fence, Justin is your guy! I guarantee he will beat everyone's prices! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 #ExceptionalCustomerService #HappyCustomerHappyBusiness

Kevin responded quickly to my post for fence repair, he came out and provided me a very reasonable quote and allowed me time to get other quotes. His turned out to be the best and we scheduled a date for the job. He sent me a text asking if he could do the work earlier than scheduled, worked for me since it freed up our Saturday. He came out on time, worked a better part of the day and did an excellent job. We are very happy with the work he did and would certainly recommend anyone needing handyman services call him first.

We had Fence Up install a 255' gothic picket fence with 2 gates spanning some not exactly level topography in the backyard. After seeing a promotion on their page, we contacted Matt for the estimate and he met us within 48 hours. At first, we had some concerns about the lines (existing neighboring fences) and a corner that would be over multiple root systems. Matt smiled and said, "No problem."Matt and his crew were awesome and professional to do business with. They handled the entire process, took all of our requests into account, and eliminated the previous concerns. I came home to a beautiful new fence at a great rate completed in a matter of days - estimate to finish. We (including the dog) couldn't be happier with the end result! I'm sure we will be fine for a long time, but if I needed another fence, big or small, I'd call Fence Up in a heartbeat.Thank you, Fence Up!

The first consultation with Kent went very smoothly. He was polite and knowledgeable and the quote we were given was fair. However, there was a serious lack of communication after that. I did not receive any information about the project until a flat bed truck of lumber showed up at my front door without my knowledge of delivery. I had to reach out and call the office myself to find out that my project had been moved up 2 weeks earlier and they had “forgotten to call me”. This was an issue, as you have to be home at project start time, and I was not going to be home. The office manager was not pleasant to me when I explained the issue with the change in date without my knowledge. The actual fence is beautiful and was put up in 2 days. The men who constructed it were polite and quick workers. Overall, I would hire again based on my interaction with Kent (the owner) and the quality of the fence for the price. I would hope based on their other reviews, that the communication issue I experienced was just a one time thing.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

    • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
    • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
    • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
    • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
    • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
    • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
    • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
    • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

    • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
    • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
    • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
    • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
    • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
    • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.
