Tony and his crew renovated my entire full bathroom, kitchen, half bath, and exterior studio workspace. Their work included plumbing, electrical, insulation, sheetrock, tile, hardwood floor refinishing, cabinetry assembly and install, and new floor install. I initially hired Tony for a much smaller scope of work but once he signed up over a month ago I don't think he has missed a single day of work at my home except for one or two Sundays. His work ethic is unparalleled but more importantly, his "can-do" attitude was always positive and professional. I repeatedly had him fix the mistakes of other workers I had hired. He never complained - he just politely informed me that he would "take care of it", often at no extra charge. My job changed multiple times but my price with Tony stayed the same. He reminded me several times that he wasn't the type to "nickel and dime" his clients and that he was more invested in building relationships with satisfied customers. Of all the people I had working in my home Tony is the only one I would not hesitate to call back or recommend to friends. The one note I would add is that I felt most at ease when it was Tony himself doing the actual work. He is the lead contractor because of his attention to detail. I know that if he comes into my space to work he will leave it clean. There is a reason why Tony has so many glowing reviews on Thumbtack. He is competent, quick, and will get your job done for an extremely fair price. Moreover, he (and his crew) are just kind and professional people that really do their absolute best to get your job done right.

I cannot begin to describe how excellent Dave Edwards of D&L Contractors was in taking care of my electrical upgrade needs. He walked me through the process, explained everything, and executed his work in a timely manner. It is very obvious he is very skilled and loves what he does. As a first time homeowner I am always apprehensive having any kind of work done but Dave was upfront and honest about cost/labor/etc and made sure the job was done right including fixing improper work by a previous electrician. He truly seemed to care about me and communicated throughout the entire process. Do yourself a favor and hire D&L Contractors!!

They had a fair price and was able to come right away to do job. The workers that showed up were friendly and knew what they were doing. I needed them to replace a rotten fascia board, wrap it with existing metal trim and put the gutter back up which had fallen off the house. Keep in mind that this work was 20 feet in the air. They completed the task in just a few hours. I would hire again.

I hired Tom to install new hinges and knobs to my kitchen cabinets. It required a lot of custom tweaking, but he made sure it was done properly and that I was happy. The job was more time- and labor-intensive than we anticipated, yet he stuck to his original quote. I don't give 5 stars lightly. You can't ask for more than a nice, honest guy who does the job right!

Curtis installed a vinyl fence with one gate in our backyard. He also built us a shed from scratch. His prices were very affordable compared to other contractors we had talked. We found Curtis to be very professional and experienced. The fence took only two days to install and the shed about a day. Curtis is well knowledgeable about his job and he would advise us what to do. Originally, we wanted to buy the DIY sheds from the store, but he advised us to build one from the scratch. The price for material and labor was great, but even better the quality of shed is magnificent. It will definitely last forever. He also saved us a lot money when we were buying the materials because he was able to get discount. We are glad to know him and we will keep the relationship going. I would definitely recommend Curtis without a second thought. We have been getting so many compliments on our new fence and shed.

Very polite and detailed. Kenny and Luke were proud of their work and meticulous. Has them trim all hedges, pull weeds, and mulch 18 cuyds of beds. The yard looks great at a very reasonable price. Paid for mulch (receipt provided) and 10 hours of labor. It was a hard job and they started to tire but powered through and I’m pleased with work. I will definitely be keeping their number handy for the next yard project.

Professional, trustworthy, the kind of person I would have housesit over a weekend if I were out of town. He found three or four major issues just in his initial valuation that numerous contractors didn't even notice or care to notice. You pretty much can do everything around the house so we are going to have him do a lot of little things that we either don't know how to do or don't need to hire someone to do. Either. Plus, with a flat labor rate no games. He gets paid for his work and that's it. Don't let a small pool of responders deter you. Month or two from now he will have 100. You can call me personally if you want a recommendation. Email besthoops@verizon.net with a number and I will call you.

Mark has done a lot of landscaping and yard work for me including grading, rebuilding a stone walkway, adding rock, building a raised bed, and more. He is an absolute gem, doing high quality work at affordable price. He is pleasant to have around, communicates extremely well, and goes above and beyond to make sure I am pleased with his work. I know he has many talents, and is always fair and professional. Mark is my first stop for anything I need done around the house or yard. He has done a number of jobs for me and all have been five star experiences.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

    • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
    • Toilet replacement: $75.
    • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
    • Faucet replacement: $125.
    • Garbage disposal: $75.

    Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
