How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

Pro Electric is the best hands down. I’m new to the area and went through a handful of electricians who charged me a bunch and never really solved my issues. This company is quick efficient and very reasonably priced. I needed a GFI outlet installed and they were very careful not to tear up my house and were able to run the line exactly where it needed to go. I will definitely use them as my go to electricians!

John did a fantastic job and stuck around just to be 100% sure that the job was completely finished. He was very knowledgeable and explained everything that was wrong what he was going to do to fix it and what caused the issue. If you're looking for an electrician in the area, definitely choose him.

Johny is the best electrician we have ever had the pleasure to work with. He was on time, professional and provided us with options that we were told couldn’t be done. We are already looking to have him work on additional complex lighting and electrical needs. Highly recommend Johny.

Jose came by for an emergency job on a Saturday morning. I tried to play amateur electrician and install several wall switches the day before and somehow shorted out a whole breaker. I spent a few hours trying to troubleshoot to no avail. Jose picked up my request quickly and offered a reasonable rate. He arrived on time with a 20 min call before coming. He diagnosed my issues quickly and even gave me a few pointers along the way. I will definitely use him again and would highly recommend.

Guilmer installed over 20 recessed lights, ceiling fans, and a big chandelier. While he did a great job in running the wires and installing recessed lights and ceiling fans, the chandelier started to come down a little within days. When it came down anout 1/3 inch, I necame concerned that it might fall and I contacted him several times, but he indiated that he was out of state. When he did not come in for almost 3 months, I realized that he did not want to take the trip and spend the time to fix the chandelier, when he was already paid. Prior to getting the job, he was contacting me frequently, but after getting paid, he ignored me. At last, I decided to file a police report, hire another electrician to fix the chandelier, and hire an attorney to file a claim against him. As soon as I informed Guilmer of my intention, he came the next day to fix the faulty workmanship of the chandelier installation. I would have given him 5 Stars, if he had been responsive.

Ricardo was everything you could hope for in an electrician: 1)honest, 2) on-time, 3) worked quickly, and 4) reasonably priced. We had him look at three different electrical issues we had in our home: 2 were related to low or no power to many of our outlets and the other was related to an unsafe install of a new outlet handled by a different contractor. He was on-time and got to work quickly. He discovered the low power issues were related to needing a new GFCI outlet and needing some repairs to our circuit box. I had a couple GFCIs laying around and he used them (instead of charging me for one from his truck) to reduce my costs with no hassle. The rest of the supplies he needed he charged me at cost. He was in/out in less than three hours after solving major issues in our home. I was charged his hourly rate (plus very minimal supplies). I really trusted him because he walked through every thing and was very transparent throughout. He didn’t hard sell me AT ALL on anything which I really appreciated as a new home owner and as a woman. We’ve had half a dozen home contractor types in/out of our house for the last few months, and he is without question the very best we’ve hired. 10/10 - I would recommend him to everyone and we will absolutely call again if we ever need any electrical assistance in the future.
