John did most of our kitchen remodeling work for us. This was the first time we have done a project like this so we were sort of feeling our way. I would hire John again, though his helper, Jamie, was not as good. I think the qulity of work was generally good, but I wasn't there to watch most of it. Some smaller details looked like they could have been handled better, such as flatness/evenness of the floor, placement of electrical boxes, some of the edges where the new floor met the old floor or HVAC vents. John was always happy to change something for us, but of course it would cost more to make the change. When they initially installed the cabinets one section was about 3/4 of an inch misalligned with the existing wall. Apparently they didn't see anything wrong with that and went ahead and installed the cabinets. When I saw the result I thought we needed to fix it, which John did, but he charged us another $225 to do it. There are probably always unforeseen circumstances that arrise during construction, especially in remodeling, and sometimes John would figure out a good solution (one that we liked), but other times it would be not such a good solution and we might have wanted it done differently. So more communication at those times would have been nice. Overall we are pleased with the results. The new kitchen looks pretty good, though we're still only about 95% completed. We are still waiting for a few ordered items to arrive and John will be back to finish things off. John was good at telling us when he would be there and when he wouldn't. The project has gone on a little longer than we had hoped, about 8 weeks, but things kept on schedule pretty well and there were a few unexpected extras like replacing part of the ceiling and removing multiple old floors. It was pretty easy to work with John and he seems trustworthy. I think we are a bit overbudget, but we did add in some extra painting to the job. Knowing what I now know, I think the project would go more smoothly if we had to do it again. I think John also learned some things during this project. For example, I don't hink he had installed hardwood flooring before. I bet he would also be better at that if he had to do it again. John gets things done, but sometimes he should think ahead a few more steps and try to figure out if he's doing things the best way.

You came out and listened to what we needed and offered suggestions to make the job better. you were reasonally priced and very professional. you and your guys cleaned up after your selfs regulary. We had steps installed, a screened in porch, trim installed and repairs on my brick steps. the screened in porch came out beautiful. I enjoy using it. the repair on the brick steps came out great as well as the trim work. the new steps look great also. I will and have recommended your company to my friends and neighbors. We were so pleased that we already contracted your company to make custom cabinets for us. Thanks again and looking forward to getting our new cabinets. Yours truly Gary & Marie Lear.

I have nothing but good things to say about this contractor/friend. I've found that one of the harder tests of friendship is doing business with them. In this case I have no regrets. In the past four years I have bought a home, had to move out of town and rent that home. Adams Home Renovations has helped with: Put up a new fence, installed a door, painted and prepared my rental property between tenants, repaired my eve and roof when I incurred wind damage. I have referred them to family members: For my father - replaced a barn door, put down new flooring on the sun porch, noticed some bad water damage and repaired the gutters and some supports. For my mother - put in a new door after her home got broken into. Went out of their way to get this done in a hurry. Remodeled a bathroom, painted and installed ceiling fans. For my Aunt - Touched up some mortar, put up a facade to hide some computer wires and exposed structural steel, and repaired concrete at the threshold at her garage door. There are several other jobs they have done, and I (and their clients) have been pleasantly by their work. I'll be frank, the people at Adams Home Renovations are friends of mine. I have had problems doing business with other friends in the past. But if I ever had a single problem with the work Adams Home Renovations have done for me, my friends and my family, I wouldn't keep recommending them for any job large or small.

They have a diverse skill set and could handle tiling, floor installation, lighting and electrical and faucet installation as well as painting. They obviously take great pride in their work. Tony, made a very bad experience much better. I contacted a local Hardwood flooring company to install 2000 square feet of very expensive unfinished walnut floors in my home. There are to many things that went wrong for me to list. However, I will share that the problems ranged from, substandard craftsmanship to stolen personal items. I was forced to find a new Hardwood flooring installer. Tony Tran, was highly recommended by a friend. Tony came over looked at the floors, and made several suggestions. He helped me understand what needed to be done to correct a number of issues. Because of my previously, bad and unfortunate experience, I was very guarded and more observant. Tony remained professional never once saying anything negative about the previous contractor. The floors took on a totally unique and much more professional look. I was very pleased. After the job was completed, there were a couple of small area's that needed to be touched up. I called Tony and his business partner, they came over right away and took care of it. It was at this point, that I made the decision to put hardwoods in area's of my home that was budgeted for carpet. Tony was worth the extra money that I spent. Again I would highly recommend Tony Tran and his business partner to others, needing Hardwood flooring in their homes. I would certainly use him for any of my future needs. Thanks!!

Adam Hale did a kitchen remodel for us. Work included removing cabinets, appliances and laminate flooring from the old kitchen and installing new cabinets (supplied by Woodmark Cabinets via Home Depot), appliances and new tile flooring and backsplash. His work was very good and he took great care to minimize dust and debris in the rest of the house. (My wife was VERY impressed and pleased with that!) He communicated well about the schedule and made it easy for us to plan accordingly. He is obviously very experienced and when confronted with the inevitable curve balls that come up on any project, he knew exactly what to do. We discovered our floor was sagging by almost 2” in one corner, and he handled it efficiently without any impact to the overall construction schedule. I can recommend his work without reservation. As a matter of fact, he is on the short list of contractors when we get ready to remodel our master bath!

I've known Burton for many years and this was the first project that I've hired him for, a bathroom remodel. I had a one bath house and he was able to make it into a bath and half resort. He also pointed out some work that needed to be done to insure the overall safety of the house such as adding and install new floor joists were there were none, gutting the existing plumbing and replacing due to advanced age, and also some questionable electric runs which were taken care of. Burton installed the travertine tile in both bathrooms and even did the shower tile to the ceiling. He was able to install the fixtures I had for the project with ease, such as the vanity and toilets. Burton was easy to work with on this project and took the questions and suggestions easily and gave great answers to the questions. This was the first project I've ever done for my house and Burton will be getting the next projects that will coming down the line. You will enjoy having Burton as your contractor.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
