This is the second job 5th Gen has done for us (the first was a kitchen remodel two years ago), and the experience has been excellent. These folks are craftsmen. The custom cabinets and shelves are beautiful, like a high quality piece of furniture. The individuals doing the work are very pleasant and have been careful to consult us before making any decisions about the work. This work was largely in our living room, and they cleaned up completely at the end of each day so that we could use the room in the evening. We woud hire them again in the future, and probably will. It took a while to get the job started as their schedule is full, but no different from other contractors, in our experience.

The design services provided by Lizzie Moore and the New Vision team were outstanding and professional in every way. Lizzie has spoken with me extensively about different options for my home including paint colors, furniture, layouts, and fabric choices. She even developed multiple floor plans of my entire home and has been very patient as I have made decisions. Lizzie's attention to design details and color coordination are unmatched! She is truly a skilled designer, not to mention is very fun to work with!

Victoria is very creative and very receptive to my requests for texture and colors. Victoria was very motivated to pull together my desires coupled with her vision. I've used her on one occasion and plan to use her again! She was very professional and personable. I've tried a few different decorators, but I've never has the success of getting the results I wanted when I explained what I had in mind until Victoria came along. She was able to put it together and more. My family and friends compliment her work all the time. Thank you so much Victoria!!

Chun-Fa is a very organized and thorough architecture & design professional. I would highly recommend him. The quality of his work is excellent and his attention to detail is superior. He is the type of individual that will not be satisfied unless he has exceeded your expectations and performed on the highest level. That takes a lot of the worry away from a project or renovation where there are always obstacles to overcome. He is a problem solver!

We hired Eliza and Edison to do a color consultation on our new home purchase. the home was built in 1994, and still sporting a lot of the original builder grade paint. The home had a cold and bland feel. Amy and Brian showed with a huge color selection and helped us pick colors to warm the house, to include all 4 bedrooms, office, family room, and kitchen. Their rate was very fare for the amount of time they spent with us. They were very patient as we changed our minds a couple times in the middle of the consult. On top of it all, they made the appointment the same day we contacted them, and the appointment was only a few hours after our initial contact! We definitely recommend them!

I worked with Chloe on two projects in NYC: my personal office 5yrs ago and more recently an art exhibition. For my office space she chose furniture pieces that not only had great atheistic, but great functionality, but also tailored to my stature and default posture. I was hesitant to commit to a "set decor", but she created design and fluid palette where I could switch out certain accessories and colors without compromising the overall theme...which was clean neutrals with metallic and wooden accessories. Chloe's approach is incredibly thoughtful and artistic. I relocated to a co-working space and I look forward to her services again very soon. - Brooke

Natalie’s keen eye was invaluable as she helped us select color palettes and materials for both our kitchen and master bath remodels. We feel like she really listened and understood the style we were shooting for. We went with woodlook tile and a serene green in the master bath and achieved the spa resort feel we were hoping for. We are very happy with the finished products! We are in the process of trying to figure out which space to collaborate on next.

Taylor Lane of Internal Sentiments is everything. I've been wanting to decorate my bedroom for the longest, but didn't know where to start or how to do it. Plus, I'm not the creative/decorative type. I'm absolutely in love with my new room. From the blend of colors to the accent pieces, my room is everything & more than I imagined it being. Thank you!

Maria is a truly inspired designer. I love her work. Her vision is unfailingly crisp and fresh, and her use of color is unparalleled. She is collaborative and creative with a great sense of style. She helped us with our house remodel which focused on the creating a new kitchen, laundry room and additional den. She understood what we wanted, the style we liked, and gave us great ideas and suggestions to make our “new” home exactly like we wanted it. She is calm under pressure and gets the job done. She is a great design professional and I would recommend her to anyone who is looking for a designer in NOVA. She has great vision and attention to detail. I look forward to hiring her on our next phase!

I visited the Monarch to get some ideas about painting my new condo. Sherry was very helpful and I agreed to an in house 1 hour consultation. Sherry arrived with what I believe to be every possible paint swatch available. I had no idea where I wanted to go color wise but after going through each color possibility and comparing them to my condo, I took some color chances I wouldn't have taken had she not shown me the possibilities. The choices I made blend perfectly with what I wanted to achieve and I couldn't be more pleased.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
