Noel was great! I planned a makeup tutorial social for my sorority sisters. I met with Noel well in advance and we set a good date. She then made sure she understood exactly what we expected to gain from the tutorial. Very professional and knows her business. She was also a pleasure to work with. Overall, my experience/event went well. Noel's tips and tricks of makeup application were indeed just what we needed. Thanks a billion!

OUTSTANDING!!!! That is the word I would use to describe my experience with Akiba Robinson Mua from her curtious nature to her knowledgeable wisdom on makeup. I have never been one to wear more than a little eyeliner and lip gloss but I wanted to see a new me for 2014, and a new me I got! She was proficient in her application of the makeup and knew exactly what colors would look great for my complexion. I would definitely recommend her for special occasions or in my case, when you just want to see another side of you!

Very informative session and I got lots of compliments on the makeup look she created. We bought the makeup instruction class. First she got to know me and my goals. She explained each step as she demonstrated the makeup application. Then she let me try it for myself. You can bring a friend or do half of your own face. Based on her wealth of knowledge and experience, now I understand more how to achieve the desired look. She can get the best look for a wide diversity of customers. She also followed up with me to make sure everything was right. I send an outstanding recommendation and thank you.

Carolyn did a wonderful job for my prom makeup! I was super happy with the end result. I've never worn more than just mascara and she was able to make my face flawless without making it feel like I had 10 layers of makeup on. We discussed which eyelashes would be best for me since I've never worn any before and she made a custom lipstick for me. Carolyn works diligently and beautifully. I recommend Carolyn to anyone who wants their makeup done on time and beautifully 😊😊

I loved Keren's entire makeup application process! She made me feel so at ease on my special day! She was very careful, clean, and considerate. Keren told me exactly what she was doing as she was performing each application step such as,what color she was putting in the crease of my eye, how much eyelash glue she was applying to false eyelashes ect. I highly recommend her to everyone I know, and I will absolutely be using her services sometime again in the near future!

I rate Monnica's work 5 stars! She make up my whole face including eyebrows and eyelashes. It was my birthday. She did my face about 6pm for the club that night which didn't start until about 5 hours later. Even after dancing ALL NIGHT my makeup was flawless. No makeup ran down my face...I looked as if I had a glow. I got a million compliments that night. I felt like a star. I was very impressed, and can't wait to use her services again. Nothing could have been better.

Very pleased with my results. Made conversation instead of just sitting there not talking like some other makeup artists. Made sure I was happy with every single step and application. Answered all my questions well and with respect.

Krysta did an awesome job on my makeup. She took the time prior to make-up application to understand exactly what type of look I was asking for. I wanted a fresh look that would enhance my features in a professional way. I was having make-up done for my a picture being placed on my business card and I didn’t want an over the top look but more of a natural subtle look. I am very happy with the outcome and Krysta will be my go-to make-up artist for all my special events. I would definitely recommend her to friends and family. She even stepped in as my photographer! Thanks again Krysta! Helen

I have worked with Lauren Brumsey several times for events ranging from proms and charity balls to casual evenings out. Not only does she have a kind and professional demeanor, she is clearly one of the most knowledgeable individuals about make-up, coloring, and application. She is able to quickly interpret what I have asked for and execute each look flawlessly. She frequently checks in with me to make sure I'm doing well and liking the work she has done so far. I had one experience working with another individual and was ultimately disappointed that the look was not like hers. She is incredibly talented and knows exactly how to make you feel radiant in any situation.

I had such a wonderful experience. I am not a big user of make up because I feel like I am not good at applying and I'm uneducated. Alaina was very friendly and not only walked me through the steps of application but we talked about facial care and products. I feel it's so important to discuss these things with clients because when an artist does such a good job the client will then go home and can't recreate it. I personally love a natural look and Alaina nailed it! I almost didn't recognize myself! I felt so beautiful and confident and that's what every girl wants. I would recommend to anyone!

        About

Soho Lashes began in a modest yet cozy studio in Downtown Norfolk, Virginia. Founder Khadine Ellison started out alone, driven by her desire to provide a high-end beauty service to those who sought it. She soon recruited a client and fellow beauty lover who completely fell in love with the concept of eyelash extensions, and then there were two. As the clientele and demand built up, owner Khadine decided it was time to expand Soho's horizons. The two technicians picked up and moved to a storefront location in December 2011, preparing to build a team and incorporate more services. Today, Soho Lashes is thriving with four lash technicians/makeup artists, offering not only eyelash extensions but makeup application/lessons and brow shaping.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

        • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
        • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
        • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
        • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
        • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

        • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
        • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
        • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
        • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
        • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
        • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
        • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
        • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
