Mr. Young is an awesome photographer/videographer. While I enjoy viewing his beautiful images, I experienced his professionalism when he interviewed me on video at the National Head Start Association 27th Annual Parent Conference in Virginia Beach. I was super nervous that day but Mr. Young talked to and guided me through the process. Before I knew it, I was done. I could tell that he we was experienced in his field and definitely someone that likes to work with people. Mr Young is one of the best Videographers that I have worked with thus far!

Eric and Leanne did such an amazing job as our wedding videographers! I can't say enough good things about them! First, the video that they put together was everything that my husband and I wanted it to be, and so much more. As they promised, this was not just a traditional wedding video, they tell our story as well. Everything was tasteful and they caught every moment. I feel like they really personalized our video for us. Secondly, they were really great to work with. I hated even referring to them as our vendors. They came prepared for everything (I swear Eric is today's Renaissance man) and were just so nice to be around. They also worked really well with our photographers, which was nice since we were all together the entire day. From what I saw, they made sure to communicate with each other so they didn't intrude on anyone else's work. Eric and Leanne are such wonderful people, and on top of that, their work is quality!

James did our wedding video and was amazing. He was very on top of his game and made up for us being lost and uncommunicative with him. We didn't give him much if any direction and yet his final highlight video was amazing. We are more than thrilled with him. We also got a ton of compliments from our guests saying that they barely noticed he was even there. We showed everyone the video and some people didn't even know we had a videographer because of his efforts! Not only was he friendly with us on the day and always smiling, he was incredibly professional and clearly loved what he was doing making our day a lot smoother. My wife and I couldn't recommend him enough. He also got the video to us about a month after our wedding, which was great considering how much footage he got.

Few media artists today traverse deep into the core of a project. Finding the meaning and bringing it to surface level, and then executing it with efficiency, patience, care and imagination. Versatile and resourceful, Jesse Torres has not only exceptional technical aptitude, but he carries the clever intuitiveness and empathy that separates a true artist from a "videographer." Open your eyes and prepare to be blown away by JTVizion.

I have nothing but the best to say about the service and quality provided by Kevin at Active Imagination. We decided on a videographer last minute when we found out some of our family members would not be able to make it to the wedding. Kevin was so pleasant to meet with and fully listened to our requests for our special day. I cannot recommend Active Imagination enough! Friendly, great quality, and affordable. We would choose them all over again! Kevin- Thank you so much for giving us more than we hoped for with our video. You're amazing at what you do!

I own a talent agency of entertainers who do bar/bat mitzvah parties, Zumba parties, and motivational presentations. Over the years, I have hired many videographers for marketing project such as demo videos. Honestly, Sean is the best. His creativity and video skills are amazing and he always exceeds the expectation. He is a true professional who loves his craft. The videography work that he has done for me has greatly enhanced my company's marketing efforts and has greatly contributed to the strong brand that my company has become.

I was extremely satisfied with Jason Ruel. He was extremely professional and very respectful of the rules that the church imposed on him. The quality of the video that he took was very good and did an excellent job editing the various cameras to compile a cohesive ceremony, while still supplying us with all of the raw footage, which was very fun to see. His turnaround time was awesome as he was able to provide me a copy before I returned to Ohio from Virginia Beach the day following the wedding. He is continuing to assist me with copies of the DVDs for the bride and groom's families. I found that he was very reasonably priced for the services he provided and kept me well informed through both email and text messages. I would highly recommend Jason to others looking for a videographer in the Norfolk/Virginia Beach area.

I have known and hired Carlton for work over 10 years –both for his expertise as a musician and videographer. Regardless of which medium he works with, what I admire about him is his commitment to honing his craft. In a short amount of time, I have watched his new career as a photographer mature in leaps and bounds - experimenting with subject matter and landscapes while adventuring. In Carlton, you get the best of both worlds, someone who has a professional work ethic but also an artist with a unique vision. Knowing him in his past life as a small business owner of a recording studio, I see the benefit of his experience having worked with so many different clients and personalities with visions of his/her own. I can speak from experience that he rises to the occasion when called upon. I hired TakeOne Imaging to drive an hour and a half away to record and produce a short video inside of a space my company designed. He was patient working with our unrehearsed speaking parts. He offered instant feedback about what looked and sounded better on screen and he had technical command of the tools he used and all the while keeping a comfortable, upbeat, and happy disposition even after the hours went on. He had a draft of the video back to us within days and presented options with different music and gladly made tweaks to things we wanted changed. In our field of work (interior design), we hire many different photographers and the first thing I say when interviewing one is “we don’t need a diva” – that is, someone who doesn’t take instructions because they think they know what we want. In Carlton, you know you will get someone who will listen, be flexible, communicate, and deliver. I highly recommend him and wish him well on his artistic reawakening as a photographer.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

    • Package 1: $1,400
      • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
      • Two cameras with audio equipment.
      • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
      • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
    • Package 2: $1,800
      • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
