I recently needed a videographer to work with me on a trailer for a new TV show. John McClung contacted me and he had an impressive resume. When he arrived at the shoot he had a small team of very experienced people, who did the job of many, with talent, expertise, and efficiency. His editor was also first rate. I was thrilled with such a professional result at a more than fair cost. Hire him. You won't be disappointed.

This was, without a doubt, the very best corporate photography experience I've ever had -- and I've been around. :) From the outset of my inquiry on Thumbtack, Dave kept in touch and communicated continuously. His estimate was exactly what I'd hoped. The experience: exceptional and outstanding. This assignment was challenging, having to do 213 professional headshots in 12 hours, as well as shoot candids at our 60th anniversary party. I didn't know how we would do it but David came up with the brilliant idea of having two photographers shooting simultaneously. Not only did it work, but he and his assistant were an utter joy to work with: outgoing, happy, professional, kept a perfect pace, and knew how to put a bunch of introverted engineers at ease. The outcome: beautiful headshots, and fantastic candids. I cannot recommend Dave highly enough. Don't look at anyone else -- he's The Guy!

Jeff did a great job - he came over, shot eight total shots of two products in just under an hour and delivered the final shots later that day. Great service at a great price from a friendly and professional photographer, would definitely hire again.

It was and has been such a pleasure working with Derek!! We found him through Thumbtack, and, at the time, we also were looking for a wedding photographer. He recommended and had worked with All Things Beautiful Photography, LLC (also in Richmond, VA) in the past. They offered a combo videographer/photographer deal at the time, which we found very reasonable, so we proceeded with them for our wedding photographer and videographer. Since we didn't know him personally at first, we were a bit nervous at the start. But oh man, did those nerves go away after we hung out with Derek during our engagement session. He traveled up with our photographer from Richmond to Alexandria, VA (not a quick or easy trip) for our engagement session in April to film part of our shoot (so kind of him!). We had coffee first, went over some wedding details, then went exploring for our engagement photos. We knew then we made the best choice for our wedding videographer. After hanging out for half the day, we were able to get to know Derek on a personal basis, and he wasn't just someone we worked with, but a friend. And then, if things couldn't get better, we watched the video of our engagement session--absolutely beautiful. We couldn't wait to see him in November for our wedding!! When our wedding day finally came, it was like seeing a good friend you hadn't seen in months, full of big hugs, and we knew he was going to do great work. It was a VERY cold and blustery day but he toughed it out like a champ. It meant so much knowing an expert was there capturing our very special moments that we could watch for years to come. We absolutely loved how humble, encouraging and kind he is, which is evident by how much he encourages and promotes those he works with. We absolutely love Derek and cannot recommend him enough!!!! We are so thankful that God pointed us in his direction, and that he recommended our wedding photographer to us (equally amazing!). We look forward to staying in touch for the years to come. Thank you Derek for all that you've done and are doing for Dave and me!!!!!! We are so thankful for you!!! (Disclaimer to the reader--because we loved him and his work so much you likely will see this review on multiple wedding sites. Hope this speaks to his work and talent!!!)

Mitchell was awesome! Not only was he willing to travel to Virginia Beach to shoot our wedding, but he was super friendly and did a great job. He is very affordable for wedding videography but is still very high quality. If you are getting married in Virginia and are looking for videographers, you need to talk to Mitchell.

Brittany is one of the best photographers who has a lot of patience and is very responsive. I booked for the birthday party and she was very attentive without waiting for me to ask for anything. She herself suggested many photographs especially with my 2 little ones and also with the crowd as a group. She coordinated the group to get the best possible picture.

I am the owner of a residential design firm located in Fairfield County Connecticut. In June 2014, I retained Quentin to photograph eight of my projects in order to update my portfolio. As the assignment included both interior and exterior shots, it was important that Quentin have a command of lighting, composition and the ability to select the best perspectives. Quentin more than surpassed my expectations in all these areas. He possesses a fine eye for detail and spent countless hours selecting and editing the best photos from his shoot. I look forward to working with Quentin again in the future.

Gosh, where do I begin? Simply put, Alyse captures the magic of life and love. The first time the fella and I met her in person was on our wedding day and she immediately felt like an old friend, putting us both at ease. And she killed it behind the lens! We have so many incredible pictures to remember that special day forever ever. Alyse was THE photographer we wanted for our wedding, but wasn't sure we'd be able to find.

Sarah shot Mother's Day pictures of my daughter and myself. They were fantastic! I normally hate pictures of myself but LOVE the ones she did. I gave a picture book as a Mother's Day gift to my mom and she loved the book and the pictures. She made us feel comfortable and relaxed when getting our pictures taken. She is a wonderful photographer and can't wait to take more pictures with her in the future.

We booked a "head shots only" session a few weeks in advance, as we are Realtors and needed updated photos for our marketing. Joy did a fantastic job! She started on time! She was able to get a lot of shots in a very short amount of time, as she has a great eye and knows what she wants to capture. And we were VERY pleased with what she captured. She even got our pics back to us the very same day! That was awesome!! THANK YOU, JOY!!! If you are looking for a creative and quality conscious photographer, don't hesitate to schedule Joy Sumpter Photography. We can recommend her for head shot, family photos, senior portraits, weddings, class pictures (as I've seen samples of all of this work)...and so much more. We look forward to having her do a family photo session later in the year!! If you are a Realtor needing to update that 10 year old head shot of yours, Joy is very reasonably priced and you will not be disappointed. Kiara did an outstanding job as our maternity photo shoot photographer. She arrived on time with props we didn't thin about. Creative ideas and outstanding photo editing ability. With a baby on the way, she was also able to work with our financial situation. 5/5 would recommend.

My husband, Brian, and I couldn’t be happier with selecting Gayle and Brent as our wedding photographers. When Brian and I started looking for a photographer for our wedding, we met with a few different companies before meeting with Gayle and Brent. After our first meeting with them, we knew that they were the photographers for us. They are great to work with and truly share in the excitement of planning the event. They come up with some great ideas and are willing to do anything to make your photos turn out the way that you want them to. So far they have shot our engagement photo shoot and we couldn’t have asked for better shots. They really take the time to make sure that the photos turn out the best possible.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
