John showed up on time, did the installation work, and charged me $10.00 less than quoted, because he said it was a simpler installation than he had expected. Totally professional, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to work with. I'll definitely use John again for electrical work!

We always try to do things around the house ourselves. We were new home buyers in 2013 and had hired painters for a tall hallway with satisfactory results. Based on this experience, when we bought our dream home outside of the city, we were not expecting to hire professional painters to help us. Due to delays in closing and other factors, we came up on our floor install quicker than expected and needed help painting. The work Gary and his team did is beautiful and clean. His price was much more reasonable than expected; even more so after seeing the finished product. I absolutely plan on hiring Gary to do some outside work in the spring. I wish I had more excess funds to have him do more work inside- his work is leagues above our timely, amatuer work.

I needed curtain rods reinstalled on my windows because the rods were not supported into the walls properly. Penn was able to come over right away - no wait time - and completed the job to my satisfaction. I would definitely call him back again if I have another project that I need help with.

I had a few shingles that flew off in a recent windstorm. Rodney responded very promptly when I put my inquiry message into Thumtack, which was the first time I was using it. (FYI....Responses to my other inquiries on other sites came in a day and two days later). Rodney came out that same day after his other jobs were complete, took a look at the job, and was able to give a quote. I was put in his schedule within a quick window of time. He and the other gentleman have just completed the job, which was done quickly and efficiently, and it looks great. Two thumbs up! Thank you Rodney!

Todd repaired the wood frames and replaced some of the glass on our basement level windows. The house is very old (1920), but Todd was able to use creativity to get the job done. Everything was also done very promptly and Todd is very responsive with all communications, which is helpful and inspires confidence.

I am a 80 year old and Justin lives down the street from me. Him and his dad always help me out with chores around the house that I cannot do. I was scammed by a tree service and didn't have the money to pay somebody to paint the exterior of my house. Justin sent one of his crews over to my house and worked around my financial situation. They power washed my house, painted all of the trim and windows, and even replaced some of the rotten boards. Not only did he exceed my expectations with customer service but the quality of job was excellent. I would highly recommend him to anybody. I will never hire another company again.

Southern Tile Inc. (Joshua) did a great job. We had a water leak and needed immediate flooring done. Joshua not only came very early in the morning for us to work around our schedules, but he was on time for the tile installation and the following day for grout installation. He is very friendly and nice and will help in any way possible to complete your project. His expertise is not only in tile, so if you have any other needs, be sure to inform him of those so that he can be of assistance in completing your entire to-do list!

Matt from Mint Carpentry replaced a bi-fold door in our basement with a standard hinged door. The job required a modification of the wall and trim work as well. We have been very satisfied with the quality of the work performed and Matt's professional manner. We would highly recommend Mint Carpentry!

The house that we moved into had open staircases going upstairs and down, popcorn texture on the ceilings and no overhead light in the living room. Jenkins Construction closed off the stairwells and changed the carpeted stairs to hardwood. They sanded the ceilings to remove the popcorn texture and installed can lights. We were very impressed by the final product and will use Jenkins Construction again.

Dennis Dobbins has done several projects for me.The most recent was removal of paneling and insulation, repairing termite damage, then replacing insulation, installing drywall and Wainscoting. He has also installed Hardie Plank Siding and replacement windows for me. I appreciate his attention to detail and the use of quality products. The projects were completed in a timely manner.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
