Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming ranges anywhere from $75-$1,000. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

What is tree trimming vs. tree pruning?

The difference between tree trimming and tree pruning comes down to the intention and strategy in the two methods. Pruning often refers to the removal of branches deemed unnecessary or hazardous, and this process helps stimulate growth. Tree trimming focuses on removing overgrown branches. But this process can also help the tree receive more moisture and light.

A professional might recommend pruning and trimming at different times of year to stimulate growth or leverage the tree’s dormant period to slow new sprouting.

If a neighbor's tree falls on my property, who is responsible for removal?

The rules for liability when a neighbor's tree falls on your property may depend on the unique details of the situation. A common outcome is that the homeowner pays for the damage and removal. Homeowners insurance may cover a tree that fell into your yard from a wind storm. Check your local laws and insurance policy to find out.

How do you remove roots after tree removal?

Getting rid of tree roots can be tricky. There are methods for getting roots out yourself, but the labor involved will take several hours and is quite intensive. For this reason, it’s best to hire a pro to remove stumps and roots.

What do tree removal companies do with the wood?

Downed trees can have a number of different end destinations. The tree removal company may use it as firewood to sell to customers, or they may send it through a wood chipper to turn it into mulch. The tree may also wind up in a green landfill or biomass power plant. Alternatively, it could go to a lumber or chip mill.

What are the advantages of cutting trees?

There are several advantages to responsible tree cutting. As trees age and stop producing seeds, cutting them down can prevent them from falling on valuable property like homes and cars. Additionally, cutting trees allows more sunlight to reach smaller trees below, giving them the opportunity to grow. And pruning your trees can help promote growth.

Who is responsible for cutting overhanging tree branches?

You should check your local laws to determine who is responsible for cutting overhanging tree branches on your property. If possible, make an agreement with your neighbor(s) on who is responsible to trim back tree branches that cross property lines.

Absolute Tree Surgeons was the right company for our tree removal project of 3 large oaks in our back yard. Brent came out and assessed our job, determining the right direction for what we needed. We weren’t sure about full removal or just branch clean up. His knowledge of diseased trees and recognizing what work was done from a previous trimmer really solidified our decision to remove the trees. His employees removed the massive oaks and left our property with minimal mess. Now we’re able to move forward on creating the yard we’ve always wanted for our family. His prices were extremely reasonable as well. I highly recommend hiring Absolute Tree Surgeons for your removal needs.

I hired absolute tree surgeons to cut down a very large pine tree. The tree was in a very difficult spot to take down .Brent and his crew cut the tree down with precision. The problem tree was a danger to my house as well as my neiboors and I was amazed with the skill it took to take the huge tree down . I would highly recommend these guys. Ground the stump removed all the debris and cleaned up nice. All of the work at a great price and personal attention. I will be having Brent at my house to do some more work on other tree's and some concrete removal.

Joseph was outstanding! Provided him an address, explained which tree I needed removed.. then came by after he was done... not a crumb of debris left. Usually I still have cleaning up to do after a tree crew is done - but not with Joseph and his folks. Thanks!

Mr. Powers was a fantastic pro for my project of removing 1 tree! He reached out and provided a free estimate which was priced amazingly compared to the competition. His helper bailed on him and did not show up for the job but this didn't slow John down as he completed the whole project (trimming, cutting, stump grinding, and cleanup) himself in about 4 hours and it looks great. He even cut the tree into manageable log sizes so I can throw them on a fire later. Definitely consider hiring Mr. Powers for any tree removal service!

Absolute Tree Surgeons did a fantastic job! I got multiple quotes for a job involving the removal of a very large pine tree that was leaning over my property. I got multiple quotes and they offered the overall best price. The main guy Brent Jackson is very laid back but extremely professional. They actually ended up removing 3 pine trees and the price was less expensive than 2 other contractors quoted for just the one tree!! They used a crane that went over the top of my house and I was actually pretty nervous about the job. But it went off with no problems and they made it look easy. I met briefly a few of the workers while they were doing the job and they were very friendly and polite. In addition I had used them once before for a much smaller job and was happy with the service. Both times I've used them they left no mess behind and I would say that they went the extra mile. HIGHLY RECOMMEND 👍

I own/manage a local rental property from out of state – I needed a reliable, full service, honest crew to handle a job at the property. Removal was between a small shed and a fence, tree hung over several neighbors yards - took it out with no problems. Removed the vines from the fence as well. Brent and his team did a stellar job! Free quote, beat out a competitors price and left the property in great condition. Would highly recommend his services!!

When we bought our house 3 years ago, we knew the 50+ foot maple tree in the back was going to need to be removed eventually. Over the years it had been cut away from the power lines by the power company, making it heavy on one side and leaning towards the house. Every time a storm came through, I was nervous that it would finally give in to gravity and we’d have a bigger problem. We got lucky that it never damaged out property, but recently noticed that it had areas of decay near the base of the trunk. One hollow was so deep I could stick a branch into it over two feet (did I mention this tree was massive?). Once we realized this hole was there, I knew the tree removal project needed to be moved to the top of our to-do list for our home’s safety. I started calling companies in the beginning of October and called four or five that took all my information and never got back to me. It was so frustrating but I wanted this project done before winter hit our area. I decided to give Thumbtack a try and Stumpbusters was one of three companies that responded to my request. Steve, the owner, came out to give us an estimate and was realistic about the challenges of the job: power lines, very small back yard, massive tree, limited access. He seemed knowledgeable, experienced and professional, gave us a competitive estimate and a few days later we decided to hire his company for the job. He worked with my schedule and the weather to set a date for the work to be done and was even willing to help me take down a panel of fence for access to the back yard since my fiancé was scheduled to be out of town. His crew arrived early, they had a guy up in the tree before I knew it and were roping and dropping pieces in no time. The weather was cold and drizzly, but they kept a steady work pace. Although they didn’t need it, I checked on them occasionally, just to make sure they didn’t need anything and to see the progress out of curiosity. When they got to the base of the tree, I was shocked to see how much of it was hollow and rotten. One of the crew pointed out a stress fracture and suspected that if the tree had fallen, which was just a matter of time, it would have done so on our house. I felt like I had dodged a bullet. They also trimmed back another tree so it was not hanging over our house as much. Throughout their work on the trees they functioned very well as a team, professional yet relaxed and confident in their work. I watched as if witnessing an incredible magic trick while my problem tree disappeared. They removed all large debris and ground the stump to fluffy piles of sawdust. Despite a very tight workspace, they did not damage the house or fence and the only evidence was the ruts left by the bobcat, which is understandable since it rained a day or two before. They cleaned up well after themselves, taking special care to remove all evidence of having used my neighbor’s yard for access to my yard. They even got rid of the mess in the street from the chipper. All of this in a day’s work! When they were done, I was so pleased with the quality of the work and the weight that had been lifted by having this problem tree removed. I’m so excited about going into winter without worrying about the tree if we get a snowstorm; now I can enjoy the snow worry free! Stumpbusters did a quality job and gave me peace of mind. I would not hesitate to hire them again for any tree related needs and have full confidence in recommending them to others.

He came with a higher quote but seemed more knowledgeable than others. After about two week of on-off dates he came, did a good job on the the tree. However, he forgot to remove a large branch from another tree hanging over my porch. I pointed it out, he stated he would come to cut it. Sent various text messages, he said he would come. Nothing. One of his messages was asking for a review on Thumbtack, however, it has been over a month and has not shown to finish the work. My wife and I, do not think we will hire again or provide any references.
