I had two trees fall on my house in January of '16. My yard has been a disaster since then. Ryan came out and quoted me a price for a privacy fence and some simple landscaping. His crew worked tirelessly on my fence and poor Nick had a hell of a time with a 6ft high, 12 ft. wide gate. Nick, with the help of Ray came back repeatedly to tweak it- sometimes working til 9pm until it was right. My landscaping and fence look great and its just what I wanted. I would highly recommend these guys and will hire again for more landscaping and future projects.

Quality Built Exteriors (QBX) did an excellent job. I’d give them a 5 stars if everything ran flawlessly, projects were completed 100% on schedule, and there was zero rework. That said, their customer service, attitude and responsiveness were the best I’ve seen! Hired QBX to complete several small projects: (1) Install 35ft of wooden fence, (2) re-flash chimney and (3) remove rotten wood/wrap garage door trim. I found this company more capable than your standard handyman service. All the employees were very experienced. If you have several exterior jobs to prep your home for selling and you want to deal with one company, this one is it!

They just finished my patio and fence installation. I will definitely be hiring them again for future projects. Hemi was so polite and courteous. My patio looks amazing and the fence is awesome. They also gave me a good price on both the patio and the fence. They cleaned up after themselves as well. Very professional.

I hired Kenneth Newcomb to replace my old wooden fence in the backyard of my townhome. He purchased the wood and custom made the gate for me. He was very patient during the entire process because it rained for 2 straight weeks, which made it impossible for him to start the job, but the first dry day we got, he and his assistant were out there installing my fence. It turned out wonderful! I'm thankful for a job well done.

Keith and Mark built this 100% custom western cedar modern fence (work of art), about 220 feet, board by board, in less than 2 weeks. Started the project in less than a week from initial contact. These guys are the best you can get if your looking for quality craftsmanship! Together we designed a fence that stayed true to the architecture of our home and executed. Keith and Mark were organized, clean ( I mean picked up every scrap almost before it hit the ground clean). Other than the materials and the daily progress on the fence you could not tell they had even been here in the evenings. Keith found top quality, clear wood, no knots, beautiful material. They measure every board, level every board, every time. No short cuts. Hands down awesome experience, could not be happier. Thank you Foster Construction Fence and Deck! Thank you Keith and Mark!

Highly satisfied with Michael's work installing the new gate in our fence. He was professional and punctual; great communication (very timely email messages which does not always happen with contractors) and "no job too small" attitude. Would highly recommend his services.

I hired Greg to replace some wood planks in my deck. While pulling up old planks, he discovered the main framing was rotted. He rebuilt the frame and an entire section of the deck, along with several planks. He also sturdied-up the railings on the deck. Superb job! Reasonably priced! Would definitely recommend his services! Thanks, Greg!

Don and his team were amazing. I needed to have my laminate floors replaced prior to my stuff being delivered to my recently-purchased home. I was concerned about finding an honest, professional, and capable flooring guy without a personal recommendation. I read all of Don's amazingly good reviews (much like this one), which convinced me to take the chance. I hope this review convinces you to take the chance if you are on the fence. They were able to work around my schedule to make things happen overnight. Within days, the project was complete and I couldn't be more satisfied. He and his entire team were polite, considerate, and respectful of my home, leaving nothing but a great new floor. Don even made some suggestions for what might be a better option than what I had planned without up selling me or trying to persuade me to spend more. As I do more home projects, I will definitely keep Cavelier Enterprises in mind and would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat.

Kenny and Luke did a great job on a large hedgerow and other shrubs on my corner lot property (owning a corner lot is a whole different world when it comes to dealing with City ordinances). They also diagnosed potential problems with my gutters, fencing, and other shrubbery that we weren't even aware of. I was amazed at how quickly they got the job completed. I would recommend this company 100%.

Our fence was in serious disrepair, with sections falling apart, and lots of rotten boards. Andrew did a great job in replacing the sections with fresh wood. The fence was repaired in a very professional manner, with the top being level and the sections being seamless. Our fence now looks great! Thanks, Andrew.

Brandon and team did an amazing job on a challenging fence installation. Brandon was polite, knowledgeable and patient with me as I explored (and explored and explored) various fence options before finding one that I was happy with and that met my budget. In addition to building a custom fence for a picky customer, the team had to contend with concrete-like soil, mosquito infestation, poison ivy and crazy downpours... and yet, they never complained-- not one of them. When we ran into a rainy spell, I felt sure that the project would be delayed, but nope... they pitched a couple of tents and kept going. Customer service like that is rare. I'd hire them again for sure!

Inquired with Cody to have some brick painted on our house. His price was amazing and his work was even better. He came out on the coldest day of the year and still knocked it out of the park! I wouldn't hesitate to use him again for other projects!

Fence looks nice and appears well put together. We had the old one removed, and the new put in and sealed. Construction was delayed by almost a week due to owner getting stuck out of town, but once started was completed quickly. Due to neighbor's structures on edge of property lines, some of the fence was forced to face opposite of the direction we had originally planned. I do wish this had been told to me during initial consultation. Gate was installed on wrong side, but we decided to go with it. Everett's was pretty communicative, and answered our questions, even after hours. They do not work weekends, but did answer texts.

David was amazing. He exceeded my expectations on this fence. The price was definitely the best I'd gotten between 4 different contractors and he was able to do it within two weeks. He was very respectful and always kept me abreast of everything that was going on. I couldn't have asked for a better fence... absolutely amazing.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.
