Despite a "tornado" and two day power outage, the replacement of our deck stairs and railings turned out great!!

Ramey has done a few jobs for me and has done great work each time. The first he put new trim in my master bedroom/bath, and also in my daughter's room. The work was perfect with great attention to detail. This past summer Ramey built a paver patio off of my deck surrounded by bench seating. He also build steps leading from the deck down to the patio for easy access. We use this new area often when the weather permits and frequently have friends and family over and the extra patio space was a great addition. I will definitely be having more work done by Alpha & Omega and would highly recommend to anyone who needs a general contractor!

We recently put our condo on the market and the deck desperately needed some attention. Unfortunately, it's still winter and often wet outside. While Chris recommended painting during the summer/dry time of year, he took this project on knowing that we needed improvement now. I had him and several others bid on the project and Chris was the best by far, which actually made me a little leery. I could tell Chris was watching the weather reports because he contacted me a couple of times with gentle reminders that we had a couple of dry days coming. Another thing about Chris is that he will communicate using YOUR preferred way of communicating.....email, phone, in person. Chris was amazingly on the ball, getting the deck, porch and other pressure washing done in a week. Because we no longer live at the condo, all this was done without our ever meeting in person or dealing with his crew in person. He invoiced via email at the end of the job with the agreed upon price and I sent a check once we checked out the work. It couldn't have been easier. The only thing that confused me was at the beginning when I received a Thumbtack email that we had hired Chris for the job, when we hadn't yet. There was also some confusion via email that led me to think the project was being started before we agreed to it but I think the email was sent to the wrong person. In the end, it all worked out as far as I'm concerned. I would highly recommend (in fact, I already have) and won't hesitate to call on Chris again. Great work!

Project included removal of old, smaller deck and construction of new (Fiberon) deck (about 30' x 18') including both wheelchair ramp and steps for access. Contractor was very conscientious about quality and meeting our needs. The contractor fully met or exceeded all expectations. This included dealing with very odd angles for the steps, as can be seen in 'Deck Step Detail', and construction of a ramp from the existing patio to deck level. The ramp is 5' wide. The ramp approach is colored, patterned cement as can be seen in 'Deck Ramp Approach Cement Detail'. Cedar fencing was installed by contractor. Homeowner will stain the fencing and add plantings for 3' out from the fence. I have no qualms about recommending PDP.

We ended up with the yard of our dreams. It was a small, tight lot, but LaBouff Landscaping had the tools for any area they needed to work. About the only thing that didn't turn out as expected was the lattice under the deck. Somehow we all forgot about it as the excitement for the wrap-up came. But that's okay, I'll probably be having them out for some new projects soon & maybe the lattice will be one of them.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

    Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
