Andrea S. says, "I’m new to thumbtack so the project posted, was my first attempt at using the service  I ended up “canceling” the first scheduled project, because of issues completely unrelated to Pristine Pane-I didn’t realize this would “decline” your service as well- When I’d heard back from Pristine Pane, I’d already scheduled my initial projects, with others who responded right away, about their specific availability.. (Day/date & time available)  Both, I initially scheduled with, had availability, in the following 2 days & both had been clear, I thought, at communicating their availability & getting the projects scheduled quickly  I realized the possibility, of getting the 1st project scheduled & completed, just two days after I initially posted the projects, was a real one! That was a fantastic & encouraging thought! I looked forward to seeing that progress accomplished during my first scheduled project today!  And i felt encouraged, that it could continue this way, until all my projects are completed! Doing it project by project makes it more feasible & manageable for me, in accomplishing the end goal, I realized this, after beginning to use Thumbtack, & after I began to interact with different handymen, for the two different projects. I made sure to keep Pristine Pane informed about having scheduled with the other handymen on the platform & did my  best to communicate to Pristine Pane, my desire going forward, to create only 1-2 projects at a time. Realizing as I began to use thumbtack, that was going to be most doable way, personally, for me to manage doing all of these projects & reaching my end goal  I reiterated to Pristine Pane that I had many projects needing done, & asked if he’d be interested if I contacted him again- after the first projects, I just scheduled, had been completed.  I really appreciated Pristine Pane’s quick responses & his expression of interest in helping with future projects. As well as his being forthcoming, that he also had another job, & that thumbtack is a side job, fully disclosing his availability could be somewhat limited at certain times bcus of this, But also adding he’s a hard worker who feels he can accomplish much during any time scheduled, which I also appreciate hearing  He took time to communicate his hope to be able to help with his service, very kindly (Thank you!) I had intended on contacting him (Pristine Pane) back about the possibility of other projects, as soon as I could, but was busy preparing for the first project I had scheduled with one of those “other handymen” for today  Spent time yesterday & this morning, preparing for this other project, getting paint & supplies, preparing the area where work was scheduled to be done today-& was on due to arrive @jobsite, & meet w/this “other Handyman” as scheduled, @10am this morning  At approx 9:57, this “other gentleman” I’d scheduled the project with, began messaging me-  He was messaging that he would not be able to work today, after all. Other HM said he’d forgotten about a party he needed to attend, instead of doing our scheduled project  Needless to say- in this moment, I really WISHED I’d waited a bit longer to get a response from Pristine Pane, about how soon (what day/time)  he’d have available to work- before I scheduled with another person whos profile had only 2reviews. Tho only 1 review, was from a project actually done. The 2nd review was only for communication on thumbtack, tho the customer had opted to hire another person If I could get a redo on this- I’d have asked Pristine Pane again, specifically, when he would be available to work, because, I can see Pristine Pane does show up, as scheduled, via his reviews, as he has many customers reporting positive experiences  Being new myself to thumbtack- in the future I’d limit myself, not just to budget (price per hour) but also a positive history of work, we the customers can see on thumbtack, via a Handyman’s, customer reviews! Id make reviews & history as big a prerequisite as my budget (rate per hour)  before scheduling, going forward, & lesson learned!  If I adjust my standards going forward to reflect this learned lesson, perhaps I can avoid having another bad experience  The no show, “other handyman” didn’t have the history & reviews that Pristine Pane DOES have. Pristine Pane, if you might be interested in doing some interior painting, perhaps to start? Then we could still do some work together & perhaps some other smaller projects- down the line too If you’d be interested? If so I’d love to talk more But our message box also closed when I cancelled that job My apologies Will create now listing & will look for you again? In the meantime I’m posting a positive review for Pristine Pane, because I appreciated your time & kindness in responding & your willingness to work on my project,s, when you’re not working your other job  I will keep you in mind, as I just reread the specific services you offer on your profile I do think we are a good fit In regards to specific projects I need to get completed, going forward, if you’re interested? Thank you for your time, thus far! Great work on your profile too!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get the outside of your house painted?

You can expect to pay around $2,535 to get the outside of your house painted, though this cost will increase with larger house sizes (and decrease with smaller ones). The average hourly rate for exterior painters is $45 and ranges from $25-$75.

Wood, brick, stucco, vinyl, aluminum and stone each have their own set of demands. Contact exterior painters near you to get a detailed cost estimate for your house.

How many coats of paint does the exterior of a house need?

Your house’s exterior will likely need two coats of paint. With two coats, your house will look more even and solid in color and will be better protected from moisture and the elements. The painting should always occur over a primed and well-prepared surface.

What colors should I paint my house exterior?

You have many options when it comes to paint colors. For example, an off-white creates a traditional look, and it looks great with a bright door to contrast it. Yellow is a happy color that, while light blue is reminiscent of an oceanfront style. Gray houses are also on trend, providing a classy and neutral tone that remains warm and inviting.

How often should you paint your house's exterior?

Expert opinion is mixed, but the general range is five to 10 years. However, this depends on many factors. Houses in harsh climates with extreme temperatures, lots of dust or ice or intense sunlight may need more frequent paint jobs than those in temperate climates. Also, wood houses will need new paint more often due to the changes within the wood itself. You should also consider painting the outside of your house if you plan to sell it.

What is the best exterior house paint?

Acrylic paints are generally considered good options for today’s home exterior paint jobs. You can also choose an oil-based or latex (water-based) paint. Also, look into specialty paints for your doors, roof, gutters, siding and other exterior surfaces.

What questions should I ask an exterior painter?

While painters’ online profiles provide helpful customer reviews and other information, it’s still important to ask the right questions. Ask whether they have sufficient workman’s compensation insurance to cover any injuries to avoid any potential financial liability. Get in writing the preparatory steps the painter takes to get the house ready for painting — simply painting on top of compromised paint won’t work. And does the work include a warranty? If the paint starts to fade, peel or crack soon after completion, you’ll want recourse.

Can I paint my own house exterior?

While you may choose to paint a door, ground-level window trim and other parts of your house’s exterior, it’s really a job best left to the professionals. One of the main reasons is experience. An experienced painter knows how to handle the prep work, spot problems and identify sources of future trouble, all while getting the job done more efficiently. They are also experienced with spending long hours on tall ladders. If you want high-quality work, it’s best to hire a professional painter near you

What should I expect from a painting contractor?

You should expect an estimate based on an actual examination of the house, as well as a plan for exactly what the painter will do. During the job, the painters should behave professionally while working as efficiently as possible to complete the job in a reasonable timeframe. Afterward, the only evidence of the paint job should be the paint itself — a professional contractor will clean up thoroughly once a job is done.

How long does it take to paint a home’s exterior?

Painting a house exterior generally takes three to five days. The first day consists of cleaning away dirt, dust, loose paint, pollen, mildew and other surface contaminants. This must dry completely. The second day — and it could be more than just a day, depending on the condition of the house — is for preparation like stripping, sanding and priming. The next two to three days are for painting.

Is it worth it to hire a painter to paint my house's exterior?

It is nearly always worth it to hire a painter to paint your home’s exterior. While you may feel comfortable painting a small, one-story home, anything with multiple stories, dormers or other complexities are best left to a pro.

Additionally, it’s best to let the pros handle older homes. Any time extensive prep work is needed — such as repairing chipping, bubbling, cracking or peeling paint, or fixing caulking and substrate issues — a pro can  handle it.
