We contracted Daryl for some electrical work and we ended up needing his help with a couple other items in the house. He really is a real handyman and a great guy to boot! We won't hesitate calling him again for our future needs and will recommend him to friends!

Victor's crew just finished a torch down of rolled roofing on our house. The crew was professional and Victor was easy to work with. I would rate the experience at a 3.7. If Victor had come back to inspect the work, completed by his crew, he could have explained why there were a few changes to what we discussed as well as he would have noted some poorly trimmed material. No regrets though..

Amazing experience! So nice and friendly, showed up on time and got right to work. I was so worried that my electrical problem was going to cause more trouble than I could afford, but not only was the issue resolved within the budget we had agreed on it was done quickly too. My husband even toured him around the house to point out other projects for bid and advice.

Overall, it was a pleasure working with Element Element Electric, and I would highly recommend their services to anyone looking for a good job done at a fair price. We have a house built in the 1950s, and needed to upgrade our old unsafe electrical panel, have a few sockets changed out and a light installed in our living room. Travis and Nick did an excellent job, they were very professional, and were really nice guys. Thanks to them, we can now blow dry our hair, and run the toaster at the same time. Yay!

We hired Bruce and his brother to replace two rotted porch posts at my rental house. He was able to meet with me right away to access the project and give me a bid. They completed the project as scheduled and did a great job! We were very happy with the results and would not hesitate to hire these two again.

I needed my house power-washed, and roof treated for moss - and the sooner the better. David followed up on my call for bids, was available to do the work right away, explained his process and answered all my questions, then gave me a fair and reasonable quote and stuck to it. Two days later my house sparkled, and without breaking the bank. Happy customer!

The NG Construction team renovated our old house in Bellingham. They were very helpful at sourcing and obtaining the materials. The workmanship of the job was excellent - refinishing wood floors, complete renovation of the bathroom, installing kitchen flooring and plumbing/countertops. They did a wonderful job and offered excellent value. We are so glad we hired NG construction for our renovation.

Dave and his guys mowed, weeded, trimmed a very messy lawn/yard. They took our many blackberries in our yard and tilled the space. They did a great job!! I am happy to say I will invite them back for more work in the yard/house. Thank Dave :)

We absolutely made the right choice hiring Coast Contracting! We wanted a ramp on the front side of our house as my husband is handicapped. Vince was very considerate to offer to do the front deck first so the ramp would be done and we could have access to the outside before he started on the back deck. The ramp and new deck are beautiful and very well done. Our back deck is 10' X 40' so it was no small job to replace. We wanted an extension in the middle of the deck for extra room for our patio table and chairs and Vince's design was perfect. Vince and his crew were polite, worked very hard and wanted our input as the design progressed. This was a big project for us and not inexpensive but for the quality of work, the beauty of our decks and the great guys that did the job, we would say that you will be very happy with any job that Coast Contracting does!

For the last year my husband, & I had the great opportunity of enjoying the wonderful work of art he had done on our apt. wall, as well as the painting of the whole 2 bdrm. 1 bath , the Pergo flooring in the living room,, & dining room, & the remodeling of the bathroom. Truly a professional, artist in every since of the word. Our Landlord has even said they wouldn't even paint over that gorgeous wall he had done. We would hire him back in a second.

John was great to work with as a painter, and we will for sure use him again as a contractor. He is great person to get along with and he gets the job done. Couldn't be more pleased. Painted our whole house in a reasonable amount of time, and we appreciated that we could go to work and trust our house to him. Thanks John!!!

Wy wife and I needed help designing a cozy space in a large house. We had specific ideas but couldn't agree on a plan on our own. Colbie listened to our concerns, developed a plan that matched our vision, and short of waiting on furniture to be delivered, the plan has developed into exactly what we wanted. Colbie is fun, full of energy, always quick to return a call, and helped us achieve the space we envisioned. And as a side note, she helped up pick outdoor colors as well that turned out fabulous!

I hired Jeff and Karen to work on an extensive project in 2011. Our family home was on the market needing to be sold and desperately needed to be updated and refreshed. My parents had started projects but unfortunately as they got older things were not finished. I am so pleased with Houseworks professionalism, knowledge, problem solving and work ethic. I could not have hoped or dreamed for a better outcome. There was a lot of challenges, nicotine stained ceilings and walls, outdated tile, lighting, flooring you name it... It needed to be worked on. Jeff and Karen came in and completely transformed a dull dingey interior (including the garage too!) into a safe, light, bright, completely wonderful place to call home. The house had increased offers and was sold quickly. The comments on the interior were all great. I put my faith and trust in Jeff and Karen with our home. We found that our trust was not misplaced. You will not be disapppointed with hiring this company for any of your project needs. Sincerely, Shelley Rowe Ferndale, WA. 2/7/12

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
