These guys hauled two truck loads of demolished shed. They showed up an time and got the job done in a timely fashion. I wound hire them again. The only thing they could have done better is sweep up the small debris left behind in the driveway.

Ernesto and crew took on several yard projects for us. They repaired a rock retaining wall, finished another rock wall, removed ivy and blackberry bushes and prepped our front yard for a walking labyrinth. That required bringing rocks, pea gravel and river rock up our very steep driveway. They did a fabulous job! They were prompt, professional and so reasonable! I highly recommend Ernesto and will be calling on him again for other projects.

Justin was the best priced drywall specialist I could find. He completed the job within the time frame he committed to, and it looks beautiful. He is his own team/company, so don't expect a lot of company vehicles parked in your driveway with multiple workers walking in and out of your home. (I thought this was a bonus!)

Marvin is great. He has helped us with several projects including: He built a beautiful kitchen cabinet for us. Literally built from scratch! Fixed all our door and gate problems (we had several doors that would not close or would not lock). We recently asked him to come back and help us with other projects including creating a mudroom space and mounting our TV to the wall.

We'd hire Jeff again in a heartbeat! He showed up on time with a professional attitude. We loved that he saw the same potential we saw in our overgrown fixer upper. We hired him on the spot and he started work the following week building nearly 300 sq. ft of fence and 4 gates. His price was right and he was just all around a great guy. He definitely made a lasting impression on our yard and our family! -Matt, Jess & the boys =)

Enrique was punctual, professional, and provided excellent service. When I contacted him because of a glitch in my dishwasher installation, he called me back immediately, was here within 24 hours and the problem was resolved with an hour. Jack, of All In Construction & Landscaping responded within minutes of me placing an invitation for a bid on a backyard fence. Within an hour both Jack and Forrest arrived to look over my needs and give quote for a fence installation, including a gate and removal and disposal of the existing fence. I liked their bid so contracted with them for a new fence. The installation took only 2 days and the fence is beautiful. They completed the fence while I was at work and when I arrived home they had removed all the old fence material, raked out the dirt from the posts installation, and cleaned up all excess material. I am very pleased with the quality of work and the beauty of the fence. Plus, Jack and Forrest were friendly, engaging and professional. I highly recommend All In Construction & Landscaping as I am a very satisfied customer.

We initially hired Brandin for an electrical job but lucky for us, he was a an all-in-one home improvement general contractor. He was adaptable with our ever growing to-do list. We ended up asking him to do our trim in our laundry room, siliconing our shower, and now building a gate for us, and other random jobs! Very fair and honest pricing, professional, and recommended!

My husband and I couldn't have imagined how wonderful the job TJ and Marvin did for us!! We hired them to - pretty much gut our backyard and deck - remodeling everything for us. They treated or job as if it was their own home. It was so much more than what we hoped for. I would - in a heartbeat - recommend them to anyone. The beautiful work they did for us will be enjoyed for years to come. They leveled our backyard, planted new sod, installed all new fencing, built patio with a fire pit. They tore down and built a new, enlarged deck that wraps around the side of our house. They took out our bedroom window and installed sliding doors to the new deck which looks out onto a beautiful wetland. They installed a new ceiling fan. When we moved into our house 5 years ago, our furnace was in one of our bathrooms. Due to the design of the bathroom, there was no way to cover the opening to the furnace - leaving it an eye sore. They took our the door to the bathroom and installed a smaller door - leaving them room to install a beautiful - barn door style door - closing the opening to the furnace. In the future, any remodeling to our home will be easy, all we'll do is call TJ and Marvin!! If I could, I'd give them 6 plus stars!!

The Handyman Seattle is a very reliable service provider. They arrived on time, performed as requested and were quite agreeable and pleasant all around. They completed assembly and installation of 10 IKEA desks and 10 bookcases all in the same day. I would certainly recommend them to others.

Ivan did a superb job for me repairing and replacing a very complicated part of our fence which involved a double gate. He was punctual and his work was great. I am very pleased and will for sure hire him again. When he was finished with the fence and gate, he came inside and did a job on our wood cupboards again, very well. Give Ivan a call and a chance to work for you. Take my word, you will be pleased. Len

We have worked with Chris off and on for years doing various projects for our rental properties and home I live in now. I have had him remodel kitchens, bathrooms, outside work which has included additions, fences, decks, rebuilding my garage, repaving my driveway, building a retaining wall, installing windows, doors, floors, fans, waterproofing, you name it he's done it for me including foreclosed properties. What I really like about this company is the rates are reasonable, hes a great listener and communicator and his wife helps him run the day to day operations with emails and office work so he's not so overworked. I have hired contractors in the past that have came in demoed the job, demand more money or they disappear. Chris has either asked for a deposit and paid as work has progressed, paid hourly and than paid weekly, or what have you. Even if something did interfere with being on that job daily, he always has told me via email or called and he always keeps me updated on how things are going or if there were extra costs involved, we were notified immediately. I think most contractors try to do the work, the estimates, get materials, do the office work by themselves and i think it gets them into trouble not being able to be at three places at once so they do really well. The only complaint i have is he might show up late once in awhile but I know running a company isn't easy, I am self employed as well. I highly recommend him and his company to do remodeling and repairs. Very professional and they fix any work that has been paid for or charged for free. I have never had an issue getting him back out here to fix something that I wanted done differently or organically didn't stay put. I am avaliable for personal referrals.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
