We just did a complete remodel of our backyard. It was literally torn down to nothing and rebuilt. The job involved removing existing patio, cutting down a tree, clearing all the plants, removing steps, leveling the whole yard, building retaining walls, fence, gates, laying a fairly large patio area with pavers, building a fire pit area with flagstone, drainage, sprinklers and planting. I hired G&E based on the reviews on thumbtack and I couldn't agree more with some of the reviews about their professionalism. They are easily among the best contractors I have worked with. Reliability, Punctuality, Accountability, Flexibility, and Quality are some of the key qualities I was looking for and they fit it perfectly. We are very happy with how our yard turned out and it is better than what we have envisioned. I would definitely hire Polo and team again for any future work. If you are looking to get any landscaping work, don't think twice about G & E.

R&R (and the owner Ricardo) was the main contractor that implemented my landscape plan (had a landscape architect draw this up separately). He came in with a fair bid and executed the following: 1.) Build of a block retaining wall with capstones 2.) Complete replacement of soil and mulch for the yard 3.) Planting of various species of trees and plants for the yard according to the landscape plan 4.) Installation of pavers and gravel where needed My property was not in an easily location (elevated) - so the work was back-breaking to haul up and down the stairs. His people did this without complaint and R&R was done 4 days before the final date promised on the landscaping. In addition to the landscaping, Ricardo (owner of R&R) is extremely knowledgeable about construction so is able to help you plan around future projects that you may want to put in place (e.g., pergolas). I wish I had known him before I bought my current fence as well. I would recommend R&R without hesitation.

Don and his crew redid our whole front and backyard, and in less time than they even estimated. Cleared old weedy, dead grass and laid new sod; weeded overrun planting areas; removed overgrown shrubbery and replaced with neat and tidy new ones; weeded graveled areas and laid down new gravel. Pricing was completely fair and the results are well worth the investment. One of the best elements of working with Don is that he answers questions, responds promptly, and is just an overall good guy to work with (his crew is polite and courteous too) - not high-pressure, wants to be sure you're comfortable with the plan and pricing. I've already passed along his info to my parents for work they were thinking of having done and will continue to work with Don for future needs. Neighbors have not only noticed their great work, but complimented it too.

I hired Creative Effects to clear my backyard and lay new aggregate to extend my patio. Wilson gave me a very good estimate and came out very quickly. The guys did a wonderful job clearing...and did it SO FAST! The patio was not done correctly, unfortunately, and had to be torn out. Even though it was not done right, I appreciate that Wilson attempted to fix it, but more importantly...when he realized it couldn't be fixed and had to be torn out, he was gracious to admit it. He then ripped out all of the concrete and hauled it off and refunded all of my money. This shows incredible honesty and integrity and I definitely would recommend his services to others.

Oliana Gardening has been a life-saver. Our previous gardening service was unreliable and difficult to communicate with; they sometimes damaged plants, and our existing garden was not doing as well as it could have. I needed to find someone who was knowledgeable about plants so that I didn't need to supervise their work. From the very beginning, Oliana not only properly maintained the garden, they also corrected problems; for example, they completely removed some blackberry brambles which we had unquestioningly come to expect needed to be cut back each year. Our year-old garden is thriving under their care, and due to our positive experience with them, we had them design and plant a new garden in our back yard. This is a purely NW native garden and Oliana has far exceeded our expectations. They designed a beautiful garden that was attractive and affordable, and provided us with care sheets that featured color photos of each plant, enabling us to properly care for the plants ourselves. They have been professional and knowledgeable, trustworthy and reliable, and simply a pleasure to work with. We look forward to having them come each month to maintain our yard and gardens. I would recommend Oliana Gardening to anyone, without reservation. ~S. Wilson

I hired KD&D to get my overgrown yard back to looking like a normal yard. They exceeded my expectations. They put in a lot of work on my overgrown grass, trees, bushes and flowerbeds which transformed my yard to make it look nicer than when I originally bought my house.

My yard was overgrown with blackberry bushes (bought a fixer-house), had large dirt piles, Mole hills, holes and overall was in very bad shape. I contacted Trackwest after a friend's recommendation and Corey came out to provide an estimate. He explained that the yard needed to be completely leveled, needed new top soil, and grass to be re-planted. This was after I told him what I wanted the finished product to look like. We agreed on a price and trackwest started the next week. I am very happy with the end result (see photos) and Corey and Scott are great to work with. I would highly recommend them to anyone.

David helped us with pruning, removing overgrown shrubs, weeding and mulching and then hauling it away. I can now enjoy puttering in the yard the rest of the season. He is very knowledgeable about plants and an expert at pruning. He responded to our message within 24 hours and then immediately came over. The work was complete the very next day. We look forward to having him being able to help us as needed in the future. Thank you David. We appreciate it.

We have worked with Matt for the last two summers, and will tackle the third and final phase of our project this summer, 2016. Matt and his crew installed a stone path with steps down to our back gate, and a stone staircase up a steep slope from our back yard to our front, on the side of our house. The design included planting beds and lighting. MLG selected plantings for the pathway, and made recommendations for future plantings. Matt also built three garden boxes for our yard, out of sturdy and beautiful juniper. We so appreciated Matt working within our budget, and helping us break up our project into workable phases. We are excited to watch as the plantings fill in. This summer will see the design and installation of a new back gate, and more landscaping. It has been a pleasure to work with Matt and his crew. They were timely, worked hard, and cleaned up as they went. Matt was easy to get hold of, and always responsive. A great experience!

Richard Synder of Snyder Landscape has worked with me for 12 years installing patios, rock retaining walls, garden features such as waterfalls and ponds as well as planting and mulching gardens. Richard is extremely knowledgeable, honest and stands 100% behind his work. I use Richard because of his attention to detail. As a garden professional myself, it is important that my clients completely trust my subcontractors and that my subcontractors only do the highest quality of work. I have never been disappointed in any project Richard has done for me or one of my clients. He is thorough and thoughtful. He can be counted on to keep on schedule and is a very hard worker and has a large network of suppliers and colleagues in the field. He has an impeccable eye and is a professional with the highest integrity.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

      • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
      • Read online reviews of client experiences.
      • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
      • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
      • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
