Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

What is considered a local move vs. a long-distance move?

Local moves are among the most common moves. Unlike a long-distance move, a local move is typically less than 50 miles and does not cross state lines. Generally, a local move only takes one day, and movers tend to charge by the hour.

The definition of a long-distance move may vary depending on the moving company. Generally, a long-distance considered to be any move of 400 miles or more. However, some say a long-distance move is over 50-100 miles.

Local Move

A move under 50 miles

Long-Distance Move

A move over 50-100 miles or over 400 miles; may also be called an “interstate move” or “out-of-state move”

Out-of-State Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “interstate move” or “long-distance move”

Interstate Move

A move that crosses state lines; may also be called an “out-of-state move” or “long-distance move”

Intrastate Move

A move that begins and ends in the same state, typically beyond 50 miles

Interstate moves require additional legal preparation and will incur additional costs for distance, the amount and weight of your items, the preparation required and various other factors. Moving companies tend to do an initial weighing of the truck, which you should be present for.

A move that crosses state lines is considered an interstate move or an out-of-state move. Contrast this with an intrastate move, which begins and ends in the same state, but is typically above 50 miles.

To determine whether your move is local or long-distance, contact the best movers in your area.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

Is it cheaper to move your stuff or buy new stuff?

It often makes more financial sense to buy new stuff when you have the chance to sell furniture to offset the cost. The cost of moving your current furniture can sometimes be more than buying new things, particularly if the furniture is large or cumbersome to move. You can sell furniture online, or make a furniture donation and deduct it from your taxes (if it qualifies as a charitable contribution). Some places near you may even offer free furniture pickup when you choose to donate.

If you have valuable furniture that would be costly to replace, however, it may be cheaper to move them. To find out which option is best for you, contact professional movers in your area to receive quotes and estimates.

The customer service was exceptional. The movers were polite and very efficient, and moved very fast. The destination included a very steep driveway and steps to the front door, they never complained or stopped. Great move!

The guys were very hard working and also resourceful in organizing and carefully moving our items as we had to move from a 2 bedroom apartment to a storage unit. Both were also very nice and professional, and very careful with all of our belongings. Overall very pleased with the move as well as how quickly they responded to my messages and questions.

These guys moved fast! There was a bit of a language barrier between me and a couple workers but it didn't hinder their work any. The team arrived on time, they worked quickly and they managed to move everything in one trip. They didn't break anything, none of my stuff was damaged. I was really impressed! I don't plan on moving again for a long time so I can't personally hire them again, but I will certainly recommend them to all of my friends and family looking for a trustworthy and incredibly efficient movers in the future.

Perfect moving company. I will definitely hire them again. Even though they were running late, they called me and said that they would be about 40 minutes late due to traffic. They did lots of extra moving since there were two men and I explained the items move. No problems at all and I only needed a tape measure and a small steplatter, a few other items that I found. We were moving two refrigerators and some tables and chairs, a sofa and se outdoor furniture up and down stairs and all around the two buildings. The price was fair and abilutly professional services, I will hire them again. My Fridges moved so well and now are cool and wonderful. PERFECT. THANK YOU SO MUCH!

My husband and I just moved and had a recommendation from a friend to use Move For Less. The guys arrived on time, worked diligently and took extreme care with our items. At that time I was really worried about moving my delicate items, but the team took care of my concern & packed every item very gently. Pricing was fair enough for the awesome move we had experienced with them. They were also able to deliver it on time and everything went seamless and no damage has been made to our things.  Service was really fantastic and we do recommend them to everyone.

Chris and his partner were excellent. They worked hard to move my furniture without hurting walls or things on the wall. Some of the places were awkward and tight, but they did it. I would definitely call them again if I needed some heavy objects moved.

Leon was on time and very professional. I only had a couple days notice that I was going to have to move some furniture. He responded to my request and was able to come out before the weekend was over. I was so pleased with how he moved my furniture from downstairs to upstairs and vice versa. He took extra care to not ding my walls or scratch my wood floors while moving very heavy furniture. I will hire him again.

You would be silly not to use these folks!! Great follow from the staff as far as timing, calling the day before the move, the drivers calling when they're on the way. The move was flawless. Very careful, cautious, fast working, and positive. I even got a call mid move asking how things were going!! How can you top that?!? I will for sure use them again and I'll say it again....you'd be silly not to use them!! Chris Lucero

Juan and company were wonderful! 10 minutes early, and took great care with our things! Loved the experience. Recommended them to our realtor, too. So punctual, careful and responsive. Can’t say enough about this moving experience. Far and above previous movers we’ve used.

These guys are solid people! I was recently in a car accident, so I wasn't able to complete my move as I had originally intended, but they were there to help. They loaded everything up, quick and easy, and were always happy to accommodate anything I needed. I highly recommend the Tetris Moving Company!

DO NOT hire this mover under any circumstance. **Warning** to all interested customers needing a mover: Ron (owner of Mass Moving) is extremely unprofessional. The move was scheduled and confirmed several times prior to the move date yet Ron showed up over 2 hours late for my move, which caused me a great deal of hassle later in the day as I had to have a specific end time! He brought workers to assist in the move that were hired that morning (no background checks or paperwork on file for his employees)! His attitude was very odd in the sense that he showed up frazzled, unfocused, sweating profusely and had very bad manners. He was not courteous, he and his staff were combative when making simple recommendations with my boxes (I simply asked them to put the heavier boxes on the bottom and the lighter on top for better stacking practices as to not warp my plastic lids). They refused to follow that simple request of which I made nicely and they did not wear any shoe covers when unloading in newly carpeted home. Much of these requests are standard practices by most movers. I had a sick feeling in my stomach the minute he walked into my home. Ron does NOT carry anything in his moving truck to assist in having a smooth move including NO dollies (takes twice or three times as long without), NO covers (for protecting furniture or prized items in your home), NO wrapping of any kind, NO tarp, NO ladder (could not reach attic to unload boxes), NO boxes, NO tape, NO paperwork, NO receipt, NO bill of lading, etc. I did not need boxes or tape, but most movers have just in case. I had over 12 Lowe’s packing boxes, packing tape and garbage bags on hand. Their solution for covering my mattress and protecting my furniture, was to use my expensive odor-blocking Glad trash bags to cover my mattresses and bedroom set??? The entire box of trash bags would have had to be used for just one mattress at my cost of course! Nothing is provided but a rented Budget Truck (of which you could get yourself) and 2 shady-looking men that appear to have just got out of jail (sorry, but that is the only way to accurately describe their appearance). When asked if he had a UTC License, he refused to answer and went MIA until the question was not addressed until 9pm in the evening claiming he is operating illegally (I have his confession in a voicemail) and that he is "unable to complete my move.” Because of this, I have had to file several complaints with the AG Office and the Washington UTC. I paid cash for the services Ron provided, but he refused to refund me in a timely manner, stating "it will be a long while before I can get your money back to you” because he claims to be suffering financially. I offered him an efficient solution to send money via PayPal, but he skirted around that solution too, claiming he does not have access to a computer! One can use a computer for FREE at any Public Library. If he really wanted to refund me, he would have done so by now. I highly recommend you look elsewhere for moving services. The “price reduction” that Ron would offer you is NOT worth the headaches involved. I found an awesome company that is a PROFESSIONAL moving company that is licensed, bonded and insured and guarantees their work in writing to move me at the same price that Ron quoted.

I scheduled the movers for noon in Gig Harbor. At 12:20 they still had not arrived so I sent a message via the app and was told they were running late due to another job in Issaquah. The movers finally showed up after 3:00pm. The movers themselves did a great job. They got straight to work and had my furniture packed and ready to go within one hour. After the job was completed 2.5 hours later, I was told my total was over $400 including travel time. I wrote a check and asked for a detailed receipt/invoice including the travel time. I was told I would receive this within 2-3 business days. It has now been one week. I reached out and was told they had emailed it to me. I checked my email and spam and found nothing. When I asked them to verify which email they sent it to I was told I have to wait until Monday when they are back in the office. Overall my experience with Moving Clique is that the movers did a great job however, I would have really appreciated more initiative in communication on their end and follow up.
