Emiliano and his crew did a great job! They worked quickly and efficiently, and were very thorough. They weeded and cleaned up our overgrown front yard and it looks great! Also, they cleaned off our front walkway and porch, and it is cleaner than it has been in a year. I'll definitely be using them again. Highly recommended!

Jason and the guys were very capable, eager to please, and did a great job removing one tree, and pruning out dead and dangerous limbs from our many other big trees. They were also respectful of the neighbors and kept to the quoted amount. We'd use them again anytime.

The job entailed pruning of three large laurel hedges that frame my backyard and cosmetic upkeep of a variety of plants and bushes in the front yard. Joe provided a very competitive estimate. He was very knowledgeable and provided sound recommendations for my property. On the job day, the team was on-time, very professional, and friendly. They were also very respectful of my neighbors. I recommend Joe and his team for your next job.

Walt is communicative with this responses and the yard looks great. He's responsible with his selection of products and doesn't use any Monsanto products. He's helped us with pruning and weeding our new property and we've arranged for him to come and do regular yard maintenance as well. So far so good!

Jose did an awesome job for me! I have a large residential property that needed quite a bit of TLC. He pruned a massive rhodedendron hedge, several large shrubs, mowed and edged the grass, weed whacked a large section of the property, which included some very stickery blackberry canes, all in much less than a day! He was punctual, gave an affordable job quote, efficient, and friendly. I will be calling him for my future yard maintenance needs.

John and Shay did a fantastic job pruning three huge laurel hedges and limbing three trees. John gave me advice on how to help some of our sad arbor vita. He was easy to communicate with, and everything went exactly as planned. They cleaned up thoroughly. The price was affordable and I'll be hiring them to do some more work around our property.

Dan was fantastic! He came out the same day to give me a quote for my gutter cleaning, which was below what others had quoted me. Once I saw that he also did landscaping, I had him do some pruning. He also recommended thinning out a large bush at the front of my property to increase the curb appeal. He initially scheduled to do my property 6 days after the consultation, but was able to squeeze me in 2 days after meeting. Joe will now be my go to landscaping and gutter guy

We hired Emiliano and his team to do a big cleanup of our yard. There was a lot of weeding, trimming, hauling debris, and demolition and removal of a pergola. His team showed up when expected, operated professionally and did an amazing job on the yard. We are looking forward to having his team perform our regular yard maintenance as well.

I hired Jason to clean up and prune the front yard. He responded quickly, showed up on time and spent about 5 hours working in the pouring rain. He also hauled away all the trimmings and the yard looked amazing afterwards! I am very glad Jason did such great work, would definitely hire him in the future!

They came for two plus days to do all pruning and weeding then bark lay afterwards- these guys endured the worst raining and windy days and got everything done in timely manner. On the third day they came back to clean out debris scattered around, which was unexpected. I recommend these guys to anyone. Kudos to them!

Would hire again! One of the best quotes for thinning and pruning our tree. We had hired a different service a few years ago and they need not do as good of a job as Mike’s. I appreciated the responsiveness, especially when we had to reschedule the job to another day than originally planned.

We have a rural property with flower beds in desperate need of weeding, edging, pruning. Mr Morales replaced rotted wood borders and cleaned everything up very nicely. Fresh bark makes a huge difference. We were off site so communication was done by cell pictures and texts and they did a great job. We have now hired them for monthly service. We are very pleased!

I enthusiastically recommend Jesse Lauer and JBL Landscapes, LLC. Jesse is prompt, dependable and conscientious. He consistently consults with me about the processes and progress of work with plants that need attention. He is always mindful of the cost to his client if a project outside the scope of his contractual services is under consideration. He will provide a thorough, comprehensive quote before contracting for services. Jesse routinely checks with me about my preferences before executing needed pruning or trimming. He and his crew are polite and quick in completing their services. Jesse has formal education in horticulture and an extensive background in grounds-keeping, pest control and landscaping, on both a small and large scale. I am very pleased with the work of JBL Landscapes and would not hesitate to recommend Jesse to anyone in need of routine landscaping and yard care.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
