Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic?

If you’re trying to set up a consultation or an appointment with a mover during the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure to use digital tools to avoid exposure. When searching for movers online, ask if they’d be willing to do a video chat to assess the size of your move. This will be in place of the typical “walk-through” they perform, and they may be able to give you a price quote. You can also discuss safe strategies for completing the job during your call or video chat.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a mover when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a mover, consider making adjustments to accommodate current guidelines. This may involve staying outside while the mover works inside your home or letting the mover handle only parts of the move.

It’s important to follow social distancing guidelines while performing any service work. For example, do not make physical contact with the movers, maintain at least 6 feet of distance between you at all times, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

How can I find out if a mover is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Your local city or state’s government website is a great resource if you’re trying to figure out whether a mover is considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic.

For a source of national guidelines, visit the CISA website’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. On this page, you’ll find 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors. But note that some -- not all --  jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for moving services?

Most local moving companies are likely to accept some form of digital payment. Particularly with the COVID-19 pandemic, more companies are likely to conduct transactions through platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and more.

To ensure the mover accepts a platform you can use, you can peruse the mover’s online profile and see what is listed there. You can also ask the mover about payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a mover need to enter my home?

A mover will likely need to enter your home -- unless you’ve placed all of your belongings outside beforehand. To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, you might to consider keeping all (or most) of the work outside and/or having at-risk individuals leave the house while the movers work.

You can minimize exposure by doing a preliminary walk-through by video call instead of in person. Discuss your options with the top movers near you before hiring one.

Do movers offer remote or virtual services?

Movers generally need to be present to do their job. But if you come across a mover’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, you can contact them to see what those services include.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

Can you move furniture by yourself?

You might be able to move smaller items like nightstands, small desks, chairs and small tables by yourself. However, it’s best to get a professional mover near you to move larger items such as couches, dressers, armoires and televisions.

If you do decide to move furniture by yourself, carefully lift and lower items and take your time.

How do I protect my furniture when moving?

To protect furniture when moving, get furniture protectors. These will help cushion accidental impacts that may occur while making your way through tight spaces. You can also use furniture sliders for hardwood floors, which can make moving heavy or awkward furniture across your floors a lot easier than lugging it all the way.

A professional mover near you will likely have these and other moving equipment to ensure your furniture remains intact and doesn’t damage your new — or old — home.

Can you hire movers to move one item?

Yes, you can hire movers to move one item. Single-item movers are usually more than happy to give you a quote, which will likely be based on a few factors.

One of the primary things to take into consideration is the number of movers it takes to move one item. For instance, if you want to move one item of furniture, it may take several movers — particularly if it is a challenging move involving multiple floors.

Booking and setting up appointment was fast & easy. I hired 3 movers and 1 truck. Movers were professional & hard working. I believe the only break they took was the drive between my old house to my new house. I gave a 4 star rating for these reasons... As stated above the movers were professional, however they could not figure out how to take apart a crib. I had to do it myself. I also had to put it back together on my own cause they said it was for safety reasons which I guess was fine, but other times that I've moved with other companies the movers always took apart and put the crib back together with no problem. Also they didn't know how to put a bunk bed together. I had to assist which was a pain cause I have a 2 year old toddler who was at my feet some of the time. Mind you, I took the bunk bed apart prior to movers showing up to save time. But like I said other companies/movers put it back together with no problem & no instructions. Other than that my experience with All Service Moving company was good.

They arrived much later than stated, at 12:15 pm. They started working and the last box was unpacked at the new house at about 12:30 am. That was after they "estimated" 7 hours for the entire move. The movers were good, very careful (make SURE you get the full coverage insurance or they won't be), and worked hard. I would have liked a better estimate (he came to the house and did a walk-through, saw everything - and I even moved several SUV loads myself while the movers were there). It made for a terribly long day.

If you need a piano moved, then Moving Art is your guy! He was easy to schedule, showed up on time, very professional, and had the best price. And at my request, gave me a recommendation for a piano tuner. I would definitely use this service again.

Very efficient, took less time than the original quote. Everything was handled according to my labels. Made a short move time frame a lot less stressful.

I needed a vanity moved. It was large (6 feet) and heavy (344 pounds). Roberto provided a competitive price, arrived promptly, and carried the piece upstairs and placed it into my bathroom as requested.

We used them twice in the last couple months- found them on an app called Thumbtack. The first time, they were 2 1/2 hours late to our move which was an early morning appointment so they had no move prior. The movers themselves were great and the owners were apologetic that time and even offered us a discount. We decided to give them another try since they were nice about the mistake before and we figured they wouldn’t screw up a second time, right? Wrong. The movers were supposed to meet my husband at our storage unit at 8am Saturday. They were late again so my husband called the owners phone number, instead of answering she texts back "who is this?" Never once did she pick up her phone and actually speak to him, she would only text back because she said "she was in an important meeting with her kid". Turns out she had us down for the wrong Saturday. Told us they couldn’t get to us until 1pm and we had no other options but to take that time since we called other places and no one had any last minute openings and we needed to get into our new home as we are a family with small children. We had family pictures that later afternoon we had no choice but to call and cancel because of their second scheduling oversight. She never once offered us a discount and her word choice/tone over text was highly rude for someone owning a business when we are the customers and it was their mistake. She even texted my husband after the move was complete asking us "when her guys left our move”, isn’t that their job to know that information? You would think they would want to make it right but that’s the not the way they do business apparently. Completely shocked at their lack of care for customer service. Wouldn't recommend. Only plus is the guys who moved us did a good job and were very nice.

The actual moving went smoothly, they treated my piano with care and my home as well. However they were very unprofessional in other respects. They were supposed to come the day before and informed the seller of the piano that they would be coming the following day, not me. (I was the one who hired and payed them.) When they arrived at my home they smelled strongly of weed, like they had hotboxed the truck on their way here. Upon leaving they decided to drive through my neighbor's yard instead of backing up and leaving down the street. They left sizeable divots in their front lawn. I would not use them again.
