I had 2 toilets replaced and some pipe replacement to my hot water heater as well as 2 shower heads replaced. James did a great job. He went above and beyond to make sure that everythin worked. He even replaced the rusted pipes going to the hot water heater with a red pipe for the hot and a blue pipe for the cold. How cool is that.

I sent him a picture and he explained everything to me and was very understanding about my issues. I would recommend Nick and his company to anyone who is looking for someone who is knowledgeable, punctual, and willing to communicate over chat. Thanks Nick!

We recently had our garbage disposal removed as we prefer a drain system without it. We hired Gil using thumbtack. He was quick to respond, and then seamlessly scheduled an appointment for the next day. He arrived on time, assessed the under sink situation, and gave us an accurate quote to remove the old disposal and re-plumb all the piping. In addition he walked us through what we would need in the future for a new water heater installation. We will definitely hire Gil again in the future.

Honest Air Systems (H.A.S.) came out last Fall when we were trying to figure out why the heater was not getting electrical power. H.A.S. took a look and determined that it was a power transformer in our heating unit that has not working any longer. The part was ordered and replaced within a few days. The heater worked just fine throughout the Winter. I'm sure that if I had called a big company, the bill would have been double what we paid. Honest Air Systems has low overhead so they can provide excellent value, does professional work, and provides great service.

John put in a new water line to a refrigerator in an older home that wasn't previously set up for one. John answered my call right away and scheduled a visit quickly. He did a great job at a fair price. Hope I don't need a plumber again soon but would definitely recommend him and would call on him again when needed.

Robert from Big Jerry's was "Johnny-on-the-spot." Technically I guess he was "Robert-on-the-spot." Anyway, mere hours after noticing my water heater had a leak, using the Thumb Tack app and getting a quote from Big Jerry's Plumbing I was back in business with a new, installed water heater. Robert and his son explained what they were doing and answered all of my questions. The water heater itself cost a bit more than quoted. The install, to my understanding, comes with a one year warranty on the work should I need a plumber to come out for issues related to the new water heater. The water heater itself has a six year manufacturer warranty. I plan to use Big Jerry's in the future when I am ready to get an outside faucet bib replaced. I highly recommend for your plumbing needs.

Steve did a great job installing our new water heater. With pics of our old one via text message, he was able to get the perfect new one. He was on time and charged exactly what he had quoted. We are considering having him remodel our kitchen as well.

We were in a pinch. The bottom fell out of our hot water heater and we and no water shut off valve on the tank so we had to turn off the water main. Chris was at our house within a few hours of contacting him. He was finishing up another job. He did a fabulous job and very quickly. His price was good and he was just a straight up nice guy. Highly recommended!

From the first phone call to the final bill McClendon's people and services exceeded expectations while providing fast, friendly service at best prices. Woke up at 4:45 am to a leaking water heater. Posted on Thumbtack and got a response from Taylor who alerted me to the water heater specials. Their prices were better than anyone could offer and they walked me through considerations for a tankless heater and add-Ins possibly needed for this job. Scheduled for the next day and friendly knowledgeable service person showed up right on time and performed the work admirably. All round highest marks.

Our water heater decided to go out on us Saturday evening. We have had it for 22 years and it reached its life span. I tried to shut off the water to the tank and that broke as well. So, it leaked all night and flooded our laundry room the next morning. I called Ally Plumbing and they sent Joe out to give us an estimate. He also capped the pipe where the valve broke. The next morning Joe showed back up to take out the old water heater and install the new one. He was friendly and worked hard. I spent most of the time watching him and asked questions. He was very patient and explained the process and ways to make the new one last for many years. He was finished by noon and I was very pleased with his work. I have finally found an honest and reliable plumber and plumbing company.

I needed my water heater replaced, and I call Jeovany Marrinez. He'said a local plumber who does side job for those who can pay a whole lot. and he came out and inspected it for free, also gave me a great deal on a tankless water heater, and on labor. Way cheaper and way better to deal with then having some random plumber come out who doesn't say more then 2 words to ya. And chargin an arm and a leg.... I would definitely call him again for any plumbing projects... I give him 5 starts and would recommend him to everyone...

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

    • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
    • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
    • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
    • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
    • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

    • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
    • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
    • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
