Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

Contact the best electricians near you today to start receiving free estimates for your project(s).

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire an electrician when social distancing?

If you decide to hire an electrician, choose virtual platforms for consultations like calling or video chats. Avoid any physical contact with the electrician, wave instead of shaking hands, stay 6 feet away, sanitize shared surfaces and use digital payment apps instead of cash.

Can I use digital payments to pay for electrical and wiring repair?

These days, many electricians will accept digital payments for electrical work and wiring repair instead of traditional cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic has helped speed up the adoption of platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Square Cash, Venmo, Google Pay and others as a means of complying with social distancing guidelines.

As you search for electricians online, ask whether they’ll accept digital payment and set up a strategy for staying safe.

I had a 50 amp circuit needed to be installed in the backyard and Alex was super responsive and came over right away for a free estimate. Upon hiring, he came prepared with everything needed, to make sure the work was done on time and correctly. He also had to do some digging which electricians don't typically do. Overall I highly recommend giving him a chance if you need quality work done fast at a great price !

Art and Sylvan were awesome and great to work with. We are selling our house and needed our septic alarm replaced very quickly and they made it work for us at great value. They were quick to respond and so thorough in their problem solving with our septic alarm system. We received all kinds of crazy bids from other companies but theirs was the best and they did great work. I will definitely be calling them again. Sylvan is an electrician you can trust to problem solve for you on the spot. Both guys have great character and integrity.

My project involved 3 lights replacement (dining , vanity, porch light)+ addition of 2 coach lights on both sides of the garage door. Wallace is really a great guy to work with. I reached out to him last night and explained what needs to be done and asked him for a quote. He responded immediately and asked me if he could come to my house the next day at noon to give me a free estimate for my project because he said it’s good for him to look at the project so he won’t give me a wrong quote over the phone. He came right on time as agreed, he looked at the projects to be done. He then gave me a very reasonable, honest quote for the project and asked if he could start right away , I said Yes, because his quote was very reasonable compared to other guys that I had talked to on the phone who quoted me 1,000+ and the other was a little over 2,000 for the entire project. Wallace wasn’t able to install the 2 coach lights because he needs more time to do it. He promised to come back next week to do them. He is very friendly, kind, professional, tidy up after him and most of all he is not ripping you off. He even fixed my motion sensor light in the garage for free. He was very patient waiting for the motion sensor to work before leaving. When he left though, the garage motion sensor light works but the garage door didn’t work with the remote anymore. I immediately changed the battery of the remote to make sure if it’s just a battery problem but it still didn’t work. So I texted Wallace about the situation I think after 15 minutes and he turned right back to my house to fix it. He was a little farther away from my house already because he had driven away for I think about 15 minutes but it didn’t bother him and came right back. He is a true gentlemen! His concern is to make sure his customer is happy. You seldom find someone like that! He is very accommodating of our schedule because my husband and I had an appointment at 3 o’clock. He came around noon supposedly to just give me a free quote but because his price is very reasonable I didn’t think twice +he was ready to do the 3 lights replacement. But he had to stop after installing the porch light and dining pendant light because my husband and I had to leave for our appointment. Wallace told me to call him right away as soon as we’re done with our appointment so he can come back to the house and finish installing the vanity light and said that if we aren’t back to the house in a reasonable time for him to continue the installation then he will just come back the next day. I asked him if he wants me to pay him for the 2 lights that he already installed , he said ,”don’t worry about it.” He is really nice and not in a hurry to grab your money. If you need an electrician, hire him, you won’t be disappointed. He is a really honest guy which is very hard to find these days especially when you know nothing about electrical work, some tend to rip you off. I have been looking for an electrician since January. I had been reading a lot of reviews from many different electricians in Redmond area, Bothell, Kirkland and Seattle, but didn’t quite like what I read about many of them, some have very good reviews but also very expensive. I am so happy I found Wallace from WBSolution, LLC. He is the perfect guy for my project! Quality, honesty, professionalism ,kind and good price are rare combination to find. Thank you so much Wallace. Looking forward to working with him next week for my 2 new coach lights addition on my garage.
