We hired Ernesto Duran to build a backyard retaining wall (from 3 quotes with other builders in the area). He built a beautiful, well crafted and high quality wall (see pictures) which was about 50 feet long and 36 inches high, turning an original 45 degree hill slope to an almost level foundation. He and his crew built the retaining wall in about 3 full days of work. We chose the Manorstone blocks (6" x 12" x 16") from Mutual Materials. In addition, Ernesto fully landscaped our backyard by removing the old grass and all of the weeds and replaced it with new grass and planted about 30 new plants as well as moving/replanting the existing bushes and trees. If you are looking to top quality, then Ernesto Duran is the Retaining wall/Landscaper" to hire. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Sound Pacific completed a re-roof on a house I've owned for years. It was an old torch down and now a 30+ year TPO membrane roof. Michael Hedgecock and his crew know roofing. They did an excellent job.

I had a great experience working with Vlad from Design Kitchen and Bath. He did a terrific job on my remodel - my bathroom looks so much more modern and I have a lot more space. He was great at communicating every step of the process. He made suggestions that improved the final product and was able to pick up all the materials at Home Depot (I don't have a car), which was a HUGE help. I would definitely use Design Kitchen and Bath for future remodel projects!

We worked with Cascadia Granite this summer. We remodeled our kitchen and also replaced the countertops through Cascadia Granite. They were very friendly and helpful during the whole process. We looked for quartz and granite countertop together and they explained us pros and cons of each option. We decided on using granite and choice perfect color. They did a great job with processing the granite and installing. They were very fast and responsive. They also added supportive irons under the granite on island cabinets which was an awesome idea. They think about the details and brings to your attention to decide together. Overall we had great experience and we are very happy with outcome. The price was also reasonable and compatible for the service we got. If you want to see our kitchen and countertops you are welcome. You can arrange a visit through Cascadia Granite. We can't praise Anthony enough for all the work he did for us to get our house ready to be put on the market. He did an amazing job with our fireplace - framing it with tile, building a custom mantel from wood, and painting the brick. He also replaced our sinks, old light switches, and installed custom skylight blinds. He did everything within time and budget and always had a professional and friendly manner. You can tell that he really cares about doing quality work. He wasn't satisfied until it was up to his high standard. We truly enjoyed having Anthony help us with our projects, and are so happy we found a handyman that we can trust to do excellent work.

On January 6, 2018 I had laminate flooring installed in my condo, approximately 250 sf. The job was completed early and special attention was given to moldings and transitions without even asking. Scheduling was a breeze and communication was excellent. I couldn't be happier! Feel 100% comfortable hiring this contractor, I will use them again.

After buying a new construction house worth almost 1mill which he built. I've used him to do any modifications to that home as he was the original builder. His attention to detail and precision makes everything stand out as quality! Custom Fence, wrap around deck new french doors new roof overhang, indoor outdoor fireplace; all performed meticulously. Of course when it came time to remodel a rental house he was my only choice. Again, after ten years now, nothing has changed, still performing perfection. My modest rental home is getting the same treatment as a million dollar home. He even used the same tile guy and the same painter who do amazing jobs. They all seem so loyal to want to work for Glenn. All I can say quality seeks out quality and I can't recommend Wharton Construction enough!.......Paul T

If you are lucky enough to have Bill do your project for you, you are lucky indeed. He renovated our entire basement and did an absolutely beautiful job. His experience and workmanship are outstanding, and he dealt creatively and well with my "interesting" project ideas. He was on time and on budget and a straight shooter. I can and will recommend him for any project.

I hired Ben and his company to fix my second story deck and what stands out for me the most is Ben and the outstanding men who work for him. First, the General Contractor, Ben, was involved in every aspect of the job and kept me abreast of the job while also recommending areas of importance. His expertise was invaluable as a lot of his initial concerns on the deck have been shown to be true. Both Ben and his men's enthusiasm and love for their job was evident everyday by how they explain what they were doing and the importance on why they were doing it a certain way. They are focused on doing the best job possible. Their work ethics is a reflection of their boss, Ben. When Ben first came out to my home he immediately noted the wood rot on my deck and made it clear he can't determine the extent of the wood rot until they start to remove a couple deck boards to install flashing. He also voiced his concerns how the deck was originally waterproofed and stated how he believes decks such as mine should be done and explained why. He also made some key recommendations to improve the safety of the deck and to make it more efficient such as: 1. He noted the railings of the deck was a safety concern due to the wood rot and how it was installed. 2. He noted how he could divert water to our gutter system in an area where water falls freely which adds to the flooding we get during heavy rain beneath the deck. 3. Because of flooding we get during heavy rain, Ben, extended a portion of my deck by a foot so it overlaps our lower deck which is built on our downward sloping backyard. This is extremely helpful in that the water runoff does not fall directly on our concrete beneath the deck where it pools/floods, but, rather the water now falls onto our lower deck and further down our downward sloping backyard. 4. He recommended sidings to be used underneath the deck to hide the joists. 5. He recommended before he installs the sidings he can cut holes for lighting if I wanted to add lighting. I would've never have thought of these recommendations and am so thankful Ben did. Other contractors I hired charged more than Ben and their workmanship was no way near the quality of Bens...plus, they did not offer me any recommendations...Ben truly...I mean truly wanted to help me. It was like he was doing this project for his own house with the safety of his own family in mind. Attached are a few pictures...I have an older picture that shows what the underneath of my second floor deck used to look like...joists visible---I just assumed that's the way it's supposed to look like when you have a second story deck. The other two pictures are the 'after' pictures of what Ben did (after he tore down and rebuilt my second floor deck), his recommendations totally changed the look and functionality of my home which also immediately increased the value of my home. Ben basically renewed my faith that there are good contractors out there where you don't have to pay an arm and a leg....I got extremely lucky when I found Ben and his outstanding workers. You simply can not go wrong with Ben!

Hired the guys at Light Construction to tackle my shower tile installation, after attempting to start it on my own, and realizing quickly that I was in over my head. I knew right from meeting them for an estimate, that these guys were pros. The quote was very competitive, and the agreement was very through and spelled out. The guys were on point. Allays on time, easy to talk to, and made me feel really comfortable. Also impressive considering they were commuting all the way into Redmond for our job. They went about a 1/2 a day longer than we originally planned, but the results were well worth it. Everything turned out super nice. They stayed on budget, and there were no surprises. They left the space clean, and even hauled away all the garbage I had laying around from my drywall "DIY" work. Will work with you guys again. Hard work and great results makes for return customers. (Also being Seahawks fans doesnt hurt your business case either) A+. Feel free to use me as a reference. Blake (Redmond)

I got quite a few quotes before deciding to use ABC. The other contractors I met with were not nearly as prompt or organized. Tyler has shown up on time, completed estimates quickly, finished the work on time and on budget. The work they've done has been great... he offers input when needed to get the most appropriate solution to my renovation needs and has great taste. I'm totally type A but left selecting hardware to him and it was absolutely perfect. Using ABC was a great decision...no regrets!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
