We come from a background of working for others, therefore opening/owning business was all new to us. We were aware that the previous owners of the business were in arrears in owing others money including their tax obligations. We were getting some help from someone with a bookkeeping background, but not entirely comfortable with them. Hiring Ken to handle the taxes and making sure the taxes are paid on time, as well as responding to our occasional questions has been quite a pleasant and stress free situation for us. We have only owned the business for a little under two years, but it has grown surprisingly well. Ken is upfront and honest and has made our transition quite easy. We would recommend him as a positive accent to any business or person in need of an excellent accountant.

Allie took 2 years of my personal and business chaos and made it orderly and complete that alone gave me peace of mind. Boy she helped me so much! With insurmountable stress that taxes or business mumbo jumbo is to a new business owner. She took all of my madness and made it into systems that I could follow, she found out what I wanted, what I did and how to streamline it to make sense. She's a wizard at helping small businesses get it together.

I've done my own taxes for years and met with Stephen about a specific tax question. He was able to quickly answer my questions and provide IRS references. He saved me hours of reading, not to mention reducing my anxiety. He was timely, friendly, and charged only for the time he spent on me, which was less than the going rate for professional tax advice. Wish I'd of found him years ago.

I began a small consulting business for myself for the first time last year and the accounting / taxes were the aspect that I had the greatest questions and anxiety towards. I'm a tax professional down near New Orleans and have known Lily for about a year. I'm very impressed with her attitude and passion to get the right answer to tax and bookkeeping related issues. She's taken the time to complete necessary Enrolled Agent exams and tests, and knowledge requirements. She's taken the time to work with a local CPA, studying his strengths while networking with many other experts around the country to build a thorough and diverse network. I feel sure you'll be very satisfied with her attention to detail, while balancing work and family responsibilities, with clients needs and demands.

I WENT TO WILLIAM H. BRATTON, CPA, WHEN I WANTED TO BUY A NEW BUSINESS. WHEN I CAME IN TO SEE HIM, I ASKED WHAT INFORMATION WOULD A CPA NEED FROM ME TO EVALUATE THE STRENGTH OF BUSINESS AND DETERMINE A FAIR PRICE TO PAY. BILL WAS EXTREMELY THOROUGH AND DETAILED WITH HIS REVIEW AFTER HE EVALUATED THE INFORMATION I SUPPLIED TO HIM. HE EVEN ADDED INFORMATION ON HOW TO STRUCTURE SALE TO MY BEST TAX ADVANTAGE. I WANTED TO PURCHASE THE BUSINESS FOR THE AMOUNT OF 600,000 TO 1 MILLION AND SO I REALLY NEEDED AN EXPERT OPINION. I GOT MORE THAN JUST AN EXPERT OPINION, I ALSO GOT AN ADVICE FROM BILL AFTER WEIGHING ALL THE PROS AND CONS OF THE BUSINESS THAT I SHOULD WITHDRAW MY OFFER TO BUY. IT HAS BEEN A VERY REWARDING ADVISE THAT BILL GAVE ME. IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A CPA WHO WILL NOT ONLY GIVE YOU EXPERTISE ON THE FIELD OF BUSINESS BUYING AND MORE, I RECOMMEND YOU GO TO WILLIAM H. BRATTON, CPA.

About

I am certified in QuickBooks ProAdvisor. I do federal tax returns for businesses and individuals -- 1040, 1120, 1120-S, 1065, 941, 940, 1099 and W-2. I also do Washington State taxes, such as employment and excise, sales and use tax. Running a small business means you have a daunting number of rules and deadlines to follow for compliance. With my past experience as controller in the private industry, in addition to experience in public accounting, I understand the demands, both financial and nonfinancial, that you face. I specialize in easing you through the maze with as much or as little help as you want at affordable rates. It's so much easier (and cheaper) to get everything set up correctly from the start. To encourage beginning businesses to start off right, I will resume my $75 QuickBooks setup special (up to two hours) until tax season begins in mid-January.

They run a very reliable service. I had received a notice from the IRS that I owed them taxes for the last three years totaling more than $45,600. The notice also said that I had 30 days to clear the taxes or the IRS would take collection action against me. I was quite alarmed as I didn’t have that much money to spare on such short term notice. I contacted several companies to see if anyone could help me. I didn’t get a call back from any other firms except Legacy Tax & Resolution Services. A lady from the firm, whose name I have forgotten, called back the very next day and talked to me in a very reassuring manner. She set up a meeting with one of their consultants who provided complete guidance on the tax filing process and offered to represent me with the IRS. Legacy Tax Resolution Service negotiated a deal with the IRS and they agreed to break down the payment over a period of three years. They also reduced the total payment to $12,340 saving me more than $30,000. Great service.

Caryl responded to me about amending previous year tax returns. She was incredibly responsive and knowledgeable about how I should handle a mistake I had made on a property depreciation issue. Not only did she thoroughly respond to my emails, but she made time to discuss and give me her opinion on the phone at no cost to me whatsoever. Based on my experience, I highly recommend Caryl and Shoreline Tax Solutions to anyone with tax preparation or amendment needs.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Best call you'll ever make if you need CPA help. Charlene is our angel. She is a veteran CPA who speaks fluent IRS-ese and is wicked smart. She’s helped us navigate the tax black hole for 6+ years (both personal and S Corp business). Without her, we’d be lost. Sometimes my husband and I will think back to the years before we found Charlene and laugh. The other CPA’s in the PNW just don’t hold a candle. We recently bought a 3rd house in Arizona and it would not have been possible without Charlene. Lenders want more information nowadays and she went above and beyond the call of duty. Charlene is brilliant, quick-to-reply, ethical, efficient, helpful and has a great sense of humor (which can be tough to find with analytical types). 5 stars isn’t enough. I would give her my kidney.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

    • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
    • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
    • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
    • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
