I hired Motio Media for the video coverage of my daughter's 18th Birthday Debut Party. My family and friends are all convinced that the video coverage is excellent. We like how the video is edited as well as the background music that comes with it. It's also been a pleasure to work with Dan. If I ever need video coverage for future occasions, I'd definitely go with Motio Media again.

Greg has worked with us at Seafair for many years (a summer festival with over 75 events reaching nearly 2 million people). He is by far and away the best photographer/videographer I have ever worked with. Greg is truly an artist - his eye for detail is impeccable and I am also amazed to see how he tells the story of our events through his lens and video camera. He just captures the essence of what we stand for and our philosophy. Not only is his work incredible, but you will not find someone who is a bigger team player, who exudes more passion and who is just an overall pleasure to be around. Sometimes in life you come across people who just "have it" - who are uber talented, who make magic happen. That is Greg.

I got in touch with CHANDLER MEDIA AND DESIGN less than 24 hours before my shoot. ALEX was efficient in reaching out to me, offered an amazing quote and showed up on time, even beating me to the location. Then, when it was shoot time, he was quick to establish the best location within the space to shoot, engaging with me and the subjectdof the interview and he and Mykala, the other camera videographer, gave 1000% I will work with him again when I have to shoot in Seattle.

They were AWESOME! They brought on a third photographer to help when they realized the size of the wedding events. They made suggestions where they knew better with their expertise and it worked out better than perfect - I.e. when the best time to take family photos. They were on time and ready to go with very creative pictures. I haven’t received my photos or video yet (it’s onky been 1 month today) but I have no doubt they will blow me away. THANK YOU!!!

John is by far one of the best photographers we've worked with—we hire photographers in 12 cities for corporate events we produce. He arrived early, took all the shots on our shot list, and is just a friendly guy. His work is just as great—the composition, color, and style. It's not easy to find a corporate photographer whose work and professionalism are of high-quality. Duffernutter Photography is our top pick for Seattle photography—and it should be yours too!

After receiving 4 quotes from different photographers with a wide range of costs, I was uncertain which one I should choose. I narrowed it down to 2, but was still second guessing myself. One was a mid range cost and the other at the top of my budget. I decided to forward just the websites without the prices to a friend for assistance. He immediately came back and said that I had to go with Jeff Henkel, no questions. Jeff, of course, was the most expensive. So the decision was made and I contacted Jeff. I let him know that i'm the least photogenic person on the face of the earth. Jeff was reassuring and enthusiastic from the first email conversation to the last click of the camera. He is professional, friendly and approachable. The photos came out great and I couldn't be happier. So, to the next person that wonders if he/she should put out the extra cash, the answer is a resounding YES! You won't be disappointed.

My husband and I hired Tsp Video to video our daughter's wedding in August of 2013. Edward and his crew were great to work with! They were on time to a wedding that was an hour away on a day when I-405 was closed! They were friendly and efficient. We received a "video montage" of the wedding and a full video that contained all the main content of the wedding. Both were beautiful and artistic. My daughter had a very particular style in mind for her video and Edward was very easy to work with to adjust the video to make it exactly how she wanted it. She never felt like she was asking too much. In summary, the people, service, product and price were excellent and I would definitely recommend Tsp Video.

John and staff did a 6 hour video shoot with some specific low lighting sequences. So far everything has turned out as expected, if not better. I recommend that you take advantage of his wealth of knowledge. John also indulges in your ideas, and provides feedback. What made this experience so positive is that he took a last minute gig that had some situational snafus and helped turn it into a success. Great people make things happen. They find a way. Thumbs up. John is a true professional who went above and beyond what I hired him to do. This is what you get with an experienced pro. Thanks, John.

When I was working at PokeFresh as the Marketing Manager, I had the experience working with one of the Founders Shane Bang. From the very beginning, he was very professional, starting off by asking me questions to understand what my goals were, what I was trying to achieve, and covered his bases in terms of what I wanted to get accomplished. Never did he try to force his own ideas, but really wanted to make sure the work he did reflected the vision that I had for the video/photos that he helped us with.

I can't say enough great things about working with Kristy at EmotePro. She was able to take the amateur footage that I captured from my sister's wedding 3 years ago and create a beautiful and professional montage video of the whole weekend. She created a video that is even better than what I envisioned when I was taking the footage. The video is great and I can't wait to show it to my sister! Not only does the video look great, but the development was enjoyable as well. Kristy was very responsive to my emails and calls and was able to implement any requests/suggestions that I wanted. She was also very patient with me as I am not known for my quick response times (whoops). Occasional reminders were greatly appreciated to keep the project moving forward, haha! I strongly recommend using EmotePro for any video editing/compilation needs in the future.

I attended a video pop-up and did my first ever video for my business. I was super nervous, but I was quickly at ease with the wonderful, easy-going energy created by Angie from LifeCapsule Productions. She made me laugh a lot, and we had fun, all the while capturing video takes that led to a really amazing end result. I could not be more pleased with my video and I get a TON of compliments on it. I am eternally grateful to LifeCapsule Productions for helping over this hurdle and exceeding every expectation!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

When do you pay your wedding videographer and wedding photographer?

Most wedding videographers and photographers require a set deposit when you hire them. Wedding season is a busy time and a deposit secures that vendor’s services for your wedding date. It also protects the vendor if the couple changes their mind at the last minute, and they can’t find a new booking and lose work for the day. The deposit may be anywhere from 20 percent to  50 percent of the agreed-upon total price. Always get a written confirmation that your deposit has been received.

The remainder of the wedding videography and photography bill may be due in the week before to your wedding or on the day of the wedding. Other vendors may require a second payment immediately before the wedding and a third and final payment after the wedding video or photos are delivered. Each vendor has their own policies, so before hiring be sure to read, understand and agree to payment protocols. There is no requirement for tipping wedding videographers or photographers, but if you do want to tip them, the end of the reception is the appropriate time.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
