Well it ended well. Problem was, the moving day was VERY long. I was scheduled to have three movers and something happened to the third person, so the move was done by two instead and got started very late. There were several communication problems internally with their staff and they didn't realize I had a piano and stairs, even though that was in my quote and I reconfirmed it before the move. Communication with me was challenging because it was all by email. I would have felt more comfortable if I had been able to speak on the phone with someone prior to the move. I don't think I was even given a phone number. The office staff apologized and admitted it was their misunderstanding in setting up my move. They arranged for extra help for the piano both in the old house and new house, which I greatly appreciated, plus gave me a discount on that part, so that was also very appreciated. On the positive side, the movers were VERY careful, thoughtful and nice. All of my items arrived in great shape and the guys were very helpful to put everything in place. They may have actually been a little too careful because they wrapped almost every major item in blankets and then tape, which took a long time. This was a local move of about 12 miles and probably didn't need quite as extensive packaging. But I guess better that than being careless and things getting damaged. Bottom line, I would recommend them and I really liked the crew, but I think you should insist that you can confirm by phone prior to the move. Also I'm sure I underestimated the amount of boxes I had. It's so hard to guess before you even start packing! At the end of the day, the guys said my job should have taken four guys.

On time, courteous and professional. I highly recommend All Star Moving. They even accommodated an impromptu haul away I needed. The price quoted for my piano move was affordable. The quote is what I paid; no hidden costs or add ons. I will call them again when I have a big moving job.

Michele was very informative on the phone and told me the realistic cost of moving. She was able to schedule a last minute move quickly. The movers were on time and very professional. They called before they would be arriving so I'd know when to expect them. Also, they treated my stuff with care and fixed a bookshelf that seemed to be falling apart. I would use them again in the future and would recommend them to anyone looking for a local move.

A2B Moving was able to fit me into their schedule with less than a day's notice, after another moving company cancelled on me. Their movers were on time and got right to work with speed and care. When I paid my final moving bill, it was WELL below the price quote I received over the phone. All in all, a reliable and honest company that I would hire again in a heartbeat!

Top-notch customer service, professional crew and great experience overall! I would recommend Alan and team without any hesitation. We used Integrity Moving for a piano move and really could not have asked for better service. The price was great, the service and professionalism of the crew were outstanding and they arrived on time and ready to go. Plus, I was coordinating the move remotely for my in-laws - which I thought would complicate things - but Alan and team made it so easy. A few text messages back and forth and we were all set. You won't be disappointed if you hire them for your job. They will absolutely be first on my list for any future moving service.

Started with a deep cleaning that was reasonably priced and resulted in a spicy n span home. The monthly cleaning is so good that keeping it tidy until the next month is easy. Vagma is very responsive and friendly. So glad I have started to use this service. Nothing better than coming home to a completely clean home.

Ron sent some really great guys. Jeff and Reginald were amazing. Although we were unprepared for this move, the moving costs from Moving Mass were more than we expected or what we had paid other movers. Otherwise, that was our only negative.

Move2Gether sent two guys and a 16-foot truck to handle my two-bedroom apartment. We moved from Renton to Redmond in the rain. I had: -20 totes, -50-inch TV, -TV stand, -Dining table, -Leather sofa, -Leather recliner, -A large cat stand, -Five chairs, -Two monitors -And other various knick-knacks. The guys arrived promptly at 9:30 as agreed, and were finished by 3 PM, having done all of the work themselves. Moving into the new apartment was a bit of a bear because the apartment was a complex sitting on the side of a sloped hill, with little space for a moving truck. I was impressed with the care they took with my belongings, their organization of the move, and their professionalism. During a move day you're just kind of waiting for something to go wrong, and nothing did. Move2Gether also came in at $30-$50 an hour under their competition on Thumbtack.

I didn’t go with the moving company that had a ton of reviews, I went with these guys and I’m so glad I did. I felt like friends who cared about me and my belongings were moving me. Courteous, professional, seasoned, skilled— they maneuvered some expensive items for me and based on the way they listened and responded to my concerns up front, I trusted them. I was impressed with how quickly they worked. They did a fantastic job and I will totally hire them again, and recommend them to my loved ones. 100% fantastic experience.

Jeno is a true moving specialist-a professional from start to finish! He arrived at the move-out site early and ready to go. We were moving a full 10' x 10' storage unit, plus additional boxes from our temporary house to a new house. Jeno was able to do the entire move in one trip, with his Tetris-like skills. He and his assistant worked quickly and efficiency, while taking utmost care in moving large items. Absolutely no nicks or scratches on any of my doors or walls after the move! Jeno has over 7 years of experience in the moving business and it shows. Working with Jeno was a pleasure and money well spent. I would definitely use Eastside Labor again.

I could not be happier with my move with At-Ease Moving! I needed a last-minute move and At-Ease came through for me. I posted late in the evening on Thumbtack and had a response from Justin within 20 minutes; he and his partner were moving my furniture the very next afternoon. They worked expeditiously and with care. An added bonus is that they give a military discount! I highly recommend At-Ease and will book them again for my next move.

Dear Clutter and all potential customers, This is the best moving experience I've ever had. Ideally, a moving company will treat your valuables as their own: They Do! The person who set up my quote was knowledgeable, polite, and efficient. Furthermore, the prices are reasonable. My moving team was Kainon D, Denez H, Ralph S, and Manuele T. They were careful, efficient, and polite. They can pack, take apart, and reassemble anything you need. If I ever move again, I will use this company. If you're moving and in the Seattle/Tacoma area, you should use this company. Other companies will try to purposely slow down to hit you in the pocket book, Not Clutter. My moving team treated my whole move like they were moving their own family. That's Rare and Great!!!! Moving is a stressful experience and by definition it uproots your life. The Clutter Team took the stress out of my move and I appreciate it! They treated my valuables with care! Thank you!

Nothing was damaged and the price did not budge a penny. Thank you again for making my move across country stress free. I will be recommending AmerApex Moving to all my friends and family!

Jay and his associate, I forgot the name, were great. I will definitely recommend and use them again next year. They were quick and efficient with moving my belongings. There were a couple blemishes but I did not expect everything to be perfect. Their supervisor called me after the move was completed and provided a discount on my next move for the minor issues. I appreciate feeling valued as a customer. The movers worked their butts off. Again, I will recommend and use again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
