Introduction: My experience as a private and group class instructor over the last decade has allowed me to build a more dynamic approach. Lessons need to be fun and engaging while also having substance. My love of all musical styles is combined with an awareness that each student has a unique perspective about playing the guitar. I try and tap into the styles they're into while building them a road map for getting better. I love inspiring people to realize that they can be as good as the next person. It's fun to help "decode the mysteries" behind music and the guitar. Once people realize they can do it with a little bit of work and the right guidance, they get hungry for more!

Mike Keeney is an awesome guitar teacher! I just recently started taking lessons with Mike and was immediately impressed with his talent and skills, passion, professionalism, and attitude. I have always been a bit shy about playing guitar but I feel at ease with Mike. I was also impressed with how quickly and competently he was able to assess my current skill level and provided specific exercises and tips to help me progress from exactly where I'm at today. I left my first lesson feeling empowered and inspired. I have worked with other guitar teachers in Seattle - some very awesome talented musicians and teachers - and I have to say, Mike Keeney is exceptional. Also, his fee's are very reasonable, and his office is comfortable and conveniently located on the south end of Aurora in Fremont.

Mike really helped me to hear (and play) proper phasing in my classical studies. He also was great at keeping me motivated when I was stuck on a plateau. I really moved forward studying under Mike. He went above and beyond by offering new and interesting music, some of which were his own transcriptions, others were timely inspirations related to my interests. Finally, Mike helped me find and prepare for my first classical gig, which I very much enjoyed.

Mike is an excellent guitar teacher. My 12 year old daughter took lessons from Mike for 2 years. He worked with her both on acoustic and electric guitar. Mike has a huge range and brings that to the student by tailoring what he is teaching to their interests. Mike is great to work with overall. He spent time with us on several occasions researching, recommending, and setting-up new equipment. Mike's passion for creativity and precision with the guitar is evident & contagious. We miss him here in the Chicago area but enjoy listening to his CD's!

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I'm always transcribing and learning new music. I like to practice for several hours a day, (I only expect my students to do a half hour or so). It's really fun to be able to switch between styles and figure out all the unique guitar techniques and tones. This allows me to give substantive lessons to students having a wide range in musical taste.
