John and his crew cleared all our sorted junk, donation items, and recycling and loaded his truck within a few hours. He arrived earlier than expected but kept me well informed of his schedule by text. He was conscientious about double checking with me regarding what should go and stay, which turned about to be very helpful. He made a second trip to dispose of paint cans at the household hazardous waste collection facility. All of this was greatly appreciated. Plus, John and his crew were a pleasure to work with. I would definitely use them again.

Iza and her husband cleaned my 1br/2ba 900 sq ft apartment. I called Iza in a pinch, and she came over just a couple hours later! They did a great job and it took them about 2 hours. My bathtub is so clean and shiny. We will definitely use them again. Thank you!!

Eric responded within a short time from my request through Thumbtack. I described the job, he estimated the job charge on the phone, we confirmed a time for the work which was within an hour & a half start from the call. He arrived at my residence at 7:30p, accessed the job, drove out to Home Depot for parts needed, came back to finish the task at 10:40p. The other reviewers wrote of his promptness, professionalism, & his courtesy. I too commend Eric of these qualities. He was & will be again a pleasure to contract in the repair/handyman world that often leaves customers void of satisfaction. He will be the household professional of choice for my future needs.

I needed help dusting our exposed beams which are close to 20' tall in some parts of our home. The staff was extremely nice, accommodating, and took great care in dusting everything off and then cleaning ALL of the dust that accumulated on the floor and counters. I was also extremely impressed that the owner, Ben, came in person to make sure that everything met my needs. I would highly recommend them and will consider them for future household cleaning.

This job involved unloading my household goods from a container. It was complicated because I did not have a specific time from the transport company in charge of delivering the container to a storage facility. These 'guys' were incredibly flexible and as positive as they claim to be. Two young men arrived at just the right time to keep costs down which was achieved through careful co-ordination. They were cheerful, quick, strong, and experienced. I cannot recommend them highly enough.

They did a great job! Applied Right Finishes painted the interior of my house which included lots of trim and 20 doors. They took all the doors off the hinges to spray them and they were careful to keep paint off the household fixtures. The job was done right. I liked how Tim made sure their work area was cleaned up everyday-he made every effort to minimize the disruption to my daily routine. The bonus was that they were kind to my cats. I highly recommend Applied Right Finishes.

Erica was at our home last Friday for the "Super Clean Kitchen" package. Her attention to detail was spectacular. I don't remember the last time my microwave, sink and stove were quite that clean. I was incredibly impressed and look forward to using them again!

I've used Pepper's for two years now and love it! They have helped me pack and unpack for two moves. Have helped me with purges and Goodwill runs. Plus I have my assistant come in weekly to help with household chores. I work with the same woman every week so the consistency is very nice.

My grass got a little out of control after I first moved in, 3ft or so out of control :-/ Matt didn't judge, he talked about about how great it was going to look and what would need to be done! He mowed, weed whacked raked and until my yard was beautiful and usable again! Goodby jungle! He was also able to help out with some general household repairs! Would definitely reccomend Matt!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is house sitting?

A house sitter watches your house while you are away for work or vacation, or if you have to be away for an extended period. House sitters can also provide pet-sitting services, staying in your home and caring for your pet while you are away. The house sitter can say overnight in your home while you’re gone, or stop by once a day to ensure everything is in order if your pet doesn’t need overnight supervision. Reptiles and most cats are just fine with daily visits and feeding.

House sitting provides major advantages to the homeowner. A regular presence in your house deters break-ins and theft. Home safety issues such as water leaks get noticed and dealt with right away, so you don’t come home to big problems. A house sitter can bring in your mail daily, care for your houseplants, and provide home safety and peace of mind.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How much do you pay for house cleaning?

Hiring a professional house cleaning service is a helpful way to have a healthy home even when your work and personal schedule is packed. House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets, and how often the cleaning service comes. Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $110 and $150. Prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

    • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
    • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
      • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
    • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

    What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor.
