- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
In the first lesson with a new student, I like having a short "Getting to know you" time where both of us can ask each other questions. Usually this involves asking how they chose the instrument, if they have any past experience in music, what is their dream piece to play, what type of music they usually listen to, and if they have a favorite movie soundtrack that they want to learn. After the initial questions, I check different topics of music to see how much they know. If they have taken their instrument before, I'll ask them to play one of their favorite pieces from the past. No matter how well it goes, I am happy with what they play, especially since it is just to check basic skills. At this point, we start the main part of the lesson. We will go over some of the basic skills, techniques, and musicality which is continued in future lesson. I always write down the things we go over in the lesson, skills to work on in practice, and all the pieces and exercises assigned.
