Apart from being enthusiastic about music and skilled at guitar playing and teaching, Mary is also kind and supportive. I ask lots of questions about guitar playing and music theory. She is patient and is able to answer all of them in a clean and concise manner. She also shares with me information from Seattle Classic Guitar Society on performances and master classes of top guitarists from time to time. I would recommend Mary to every person who wants to learn guitar, especially classical guitar seriously.

Our daughter has taken voice lessons with Aaron for about 3 years and really loves her time in his studio. Aaron has a wonderful ability to connect and has really helped her become the confident singer she is today. Bitterlake Studio is an extremely warm, positive, safe and inspriring environment and Aaron is the most supportive teacher. He is a very talented musician and a passionate and artistic person. His presence puts her at ease with a confidence to explore her strenghts and weaknesses. We are so grateful for Aaron making it a challenging but very fun learning experience for our daughter.

David has photographed my family and my children separately on various occasions. He is able to capture their silliness, their sweetness and our fun. I love his sense of composition in his photographs and he does a wonderful job editing the photos. We have been offered lovely prints or cds of the images. He's great to work with. I would recommend him to anyone.

Since January 2014, I have been studying guitar with David in a weekly group improvisation ensemble. We play well-known rock and blues tunes. Playing in this group under David's leadership has greatly improved my confidence and ability to play rhythm guitar, and also to improvise melodies using minor and major scales over chord changes. David provides a very supportive atmosphere for playing creatively, and every session is fun and inspiring. I always leave feeling motivated to practice during the week on my own. David is also a master of working patiently with a variety of musical skills and abilities among our group members, and helping the group listen to each other and encourage each other. I highly recommend David as a guitar teacher for both private and group study.

Miriam was great to work with, cooperative with our inability to pay with cash/check, and the performance was great. We appreciated the background music, but could easily see that the band would be great for a more interactive performance as well. Overall the experience was great!

I was a piano student with Larry Schacher for two years. I had classical training but was interested in learning about jazz, blues, and improvisation. I was nervous to start, but Larry soon put me at ease, helping me transition to the new style I was attempting to learn. Larry teaches with patience and understanding while keeping the process entertaining and challenging.

The Rafael Tranquilino Band is one of the most versatile and exciting bands I have ever seen. Rafael's guitar work is inspired and he never ceases to blow me away! He also never plays a song the same way twice. You just never know what he's going to do. He is my favorite guitarist! Leah Tussing's vocals are this very cool combination of jazzy blues that brings a completely new vibe to every song she sings. Love her! They are a dynamic duo with some of the most talented rhythm sections in the PNW. I never miss seeing them when they are in Tacoma.

I have seen many jazz artist on the smooth jazz cruises over the past six years and Danny ranks right up there with the Best of the Jazz World. In fact he is good enough to be on the ship and open for Greats like Peter White or Dave Koz in my opinion! So Try him, you will be amazed. Ed Mays Groove Kitchen’s music is full of jazzy delta blues, pop, rock and funk as well, for a sound that is timeless yet modern in it's own way. It’s kind of like stepping back in time, but with the keys to the Porche. This group - is undeniably charming, and undeniably entertaining. Not to mention pretty darn talented. Our guests ranged in all ages, and everyone loved Ed Mays Groove Kitchen. If you want your wedding reception, or whatever event to really "Groove", book this band! -Christy K, Seattle, WA

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.
