Dennis replaced the dead fan/light in the bathroom of our condo on QA. It's a rental for us now and we live out of state so finding someone to do this type of smaller project work is challenging, to find someone who does it well and to completion is more so. Dennis ended up making 3 trips to complete the project including patching the hole when the new model ended up being 'just a little bit' smaller than the 1978 version that was replaced. He was friendly and communicative and worked directly with my tenants to scheudle times that worked for them. Thank you Dennis.

Sergei and his son are fantastic! They completed a beautiful work of art! They took my family into consideration when building the deck, as I have 2 kids. Hiring them again to complete another job! Highly recommend!

We had a very positive experience with Dahlin Design-Build. To date, they completed two projects: addition of roof dormer and lowered deck to eliminate water leaks. The team stayed on schedule, worked consistently to get the job done, and completed the projects with high quality results.

I had some damage from a broken drain pipe. I had two cabinets that had to be torn out due to water damage. One cabinet had a lazy Susan in it. I had the face boards for Bob to install on the new cabinets. Bob did an excellent job on building the two cabinets. He came over with his assistant ( sorry I forgot what his name was). They worked great together and were vey intertaining. Both Bob and his helper were very professional. The cabinets look great and put together with quality. I would highly recommend Bob to anyone and I would use him again. He was honest and has integrity. He charged a reasonable price and showed up on time. Give Bob Chapman a call. He is a good man and does good work.

Excellent. Was able to handle many different needs - fixing a closet spring, a door, mounting a tv, building a bookcase, hanging a curtain, etc. Great attitude too and very efficient. Even gave us good input for where to arrange our living room furniture and hang coat racks!!

Painted the exterior of my house for the price quoted and in a very reasonable amount of time. My only concern is that I was told to get 15 gallons of paint and a considerable amount of it went unused. Other than that I would recommend this painter.

Chris is very professional, skilled and goes out of his way to make recommendations that benefit you. For instance, for a window he was building, he suggested that we reuse a slab of travertine for both function and form. It cost a bit more but it was an excellent suggestion. We're using Chris for more work at our house and we recommend him to others. Thanks, Chris!

We loved working with John on our remodel. He does great work, is very responsive and really takes pride in the finished result. As all construction projects do, we had a couple hiccups that John found creative solutions to, ensuring we were happy with the final result. And, we are! He brought my vision to life and even had a hand in the design process when building our kitchen (which has some funky angles).

My husband and I couldn't have imagined how wonderful the job TJ and Marvin did for us!! We hired them to - pretty much gut our backyard and deck - remodeling everything for us. They treated or job as if it was their own home. It was so much more than what we hoped for. I would - in a heartbeat - recommend them to anyone. The beautiful work they did for us will be enjoyed for years to come. They leveled our backyard, planted new sod, installed all new fencing, built patio with a fire pit. They tore down and built a new, enlarged deck that wraps around the side of our house. They took out our bedroom window and installed sliding doors to the new deck which looks out onto a beautiful wetland. They installed a new ceiling fan. When we moved into our house 5 years ago, our furnace was in one of our bathrooms. Due to the design of the bathroom, there was no way to cover the opening to the furnace - leaving it an eye sore. They took our the door to the bathroom and installed a smaller door - leaving them room to install a beautiful - barn door style door - closing the opening to the furnace. In the future, any remodeling to our home will be easy, all we'll do is call TJ and Marvin!! If I could, I'd give them 6 plus stars!!

A+++ Levi (the bearded face of Left Coast), Jason and Bryan are what quality is all about. From install of new 14x14 aggregate concrete pad to final assembly of the wood gazebo, wonderful work. I'm going to turn to these guys on future projects, and when they get so busy because their reputation spreads, I'll wait the time necessary for them to return.

Brian had come to my house to give me an estimate for a back patio I had wanted done. After several minutes of our first visit, I learned about the many other talents/ experience that he has. Brian ended up building my patio, completing some finish work, and did a few other small jobs. He gives very high quality work and works efficiently. I definitely recommend Craftsman Construction!

While building a 4,000 sq. ft. home I met Mike when looking for someone to build a wall of bookshelves and cabinets in the study. I am a designer by profession so I'm particularly detail oriented and this project was a lifelong dream. It didn't take long to realize Mike was a special talent and a great person. Many months later he has built, installed, fixed and finished things in every room in our house. From elaborate trim, wainscoting, a barn door (requiring restoration of a historic door), a very unique kitchen island, mirrors, cabinets, dumb waiter and laundry chute doors, to resizing and installing a historic fireplace surround, stair handrails, bathroom vanities, address numbers, a hidden door to a powder room, closet systems and custom clothes rods and shelves, the list literally goes on and on. Not only does Mike have the knowledge and skills to do such varied projects, he has excellent communication skills, invoices clearly, and treads lightly and respectfully throughout the home. Mike will be our first call whenever we need something built or installed in our home, and I recommend him enthusiastically. Feel free to get my phone number from Mike if you want to hear more. -Jay

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
