Bree was very professional, easy to get along with, and accommodating to my needs. We hired her for bith photography and wedding planning for thr day of the wedding, and she handled everything with professionalism while helping me to feel confident about putting my wedding in her hands. She was great at crowd management and keeping things flowing in a timely manner. I had a sneek peek at a few photos, and anxiously await the final product!

I hired Shawn Nichols for a corporate event which took place in late February 2016. Shawn definitely deserves all five (if I could give any more, I would) stars and a glowing review! I will admit I was hesitant to hire someone off Thumbtack – it was my first experience using Thumbtack and I didn’t quite know what to expect – but he blew it out of the park, completely delivered and really exceeded any of my expectations, with his work for this event! Shawn is going places with his photography, professionalism and strong work ethic and I look forward to following his career. Part of me hates to write such a great review for my own selfish reasons – I want him for all of our events! :] Shawn was hired for our annual corporate Employee Appreciation Event, which I fully planned (and attended) for the first year since starting with my company. One of the things I had noticed about previous years’ events was the lack of good photography. I had seen previous years’ photos and thought they really left something to be desired. When I put out a bid on Thumbtack looking for photographers, Shawn’s website and artwork jumped out immediately, I believed he could deliver. I spoke with him first on the phone and let him know what I was looking for – more artistic shots – and his time, thoroughness and genuine excitement was clearly evident from our phone call. It seemed like he was exactly who I was looking for. About a month before the event, I called Shawn and asked him if he could meet me for coffee that week, to have about a fifteen minute meeting to discuss some items for the party. He went out of his way (literally) to be flexible to my schedule and that fifteen minute meeting turned in to over an hour of his time sitting in Starbucks and talking Photography. From there, he then drove with me to Joann Fabrics to hand-select a backdrop for the event that would photograph well and tailored to my vision. This whole afternoon he spent meeting with me and shopping for photography backgrounds was unpaid. He didn’t have to do these extra things, he just did – he was really going above and beyond before the event even took place! Fast forward to the day of the event. Shawn and his two assistants (oh yeah – he brought two additional photographers to help him capture the night. I really felt we got a huge deal here because for the price of one photographer, we really got three! This was just another way Shawn went out of his way to ensure our event success) came a few hours early to set up one of our photography station backgrounds, and the get shots of a list of things before the event started. Leading up to the event, Shawn was incredible thorough in his communications; answering phone calls and emails quickly and in detail. He even thought of details I hadn’t and prompted me to provide a list of shots I wanted to get prior to the event, during the event, asked for an event timeline and for specific individuals whom he and his assistants should be aware of. I really appreciated those questions in retrospect, as I think they really added to the coverage of the event, and with the laundry list of to-dos I had leading up to the party, I appreciated him taking the time and initiative to look out for our ultimate priorities – photography and otherwise. Shawn and his assistants Rachel and Jeremiah were extremely professional, gracious, thoughtful to guests and efficient. They not only succeeded in my hopes for an hour of couple photos as guests arrived, then roaming event coverage; all three of them really went above and beyond to make sure every shot on that shot list was completed. Our guests loved having the backdrop couple photos, and I loved having all three of them there photographing – it was amazing to get the extra coverage during that couple photo hour that I didn’t know we would have! Shawn let me know the timeline of when I should expect photos delivered back, as the party wrapped up that night, but delivered a few days earlier. He met every goal I had with the photography aspect of the event. I told him several times that he was the easiest/best/nicest/most efficient vendor or staff I had working on our event, and I really do mean that. The photos back to me were in several files, so easy to open and access, and ranked by him in order of importance (for me). His love of photography and art is intrinsic and clear in his work. His photographs are beautiful and really highlighted the event for me, my company and so many of our guests. I look forward to having – and using – these photographs for years to come! During the time I was planning the event, and had been working with Shawn, I saw another opportunity come up within my company which I suggested Shawn, and he was hired for. Those pictures came back prior to our event, and when I saw those beautiful photos, I knew i was going to be happy with his work on the event. I can’t say enough great things about Shawn Nichols. You are lucky if you get the opportunity to hire him for any event, wedding, party, or general photography needs. Shawn will make you feel like you are his only client, and will really take your vision and bring it to life. He is so genuine and charismatic and it is wonderful to see someone excel at something they love, and do so well! I look forward to working with Shawn (and hopefully Rachel and Jeremiah too!) on any future business, event or personal photography needs I have!

Zoe is terrific. We hired her due to other's recommendations and because her photos have an intimate quality that leaps off the page. We were not disappointed. She is creative, thoughful, easy to work with and seemed to be both invisible and everywhere at once. She took all of the anxiety out of our wedding photography--at a very reasonable price. I'd hire her again in a flash!

I would highly recommend Motio Media. We used him to film our wedding and he did a great job. He was great, showed up early and even stayed a little longer to capture our first dance. As you know weddings are not always on schedule, so he stayed without charging us extra which was very appreciated. He even took footage of the cake, tables, flowers and other things so it would captured as part of the video. Also, he mailed us the thumbdrive with our video within 1 week of the wedding. Very responsive, good price and very professional. The footage was great and well worth the price.

Let me begin by saying Kyle is very patient, and has an amazing attitude towards life. The kind of guy you would want as a friend for life! I was planning my wedding under 3 months and had very little information when I first booked photographers. Kyle was incredibly patient with my lack of clarity on how many hours I needed, and where I needed him, etc. He checked in with me regularly only to see how I was doing, empathizing with how stressful weddings are and assuring me that things will go well. In hindsight, his assuring messages were a huge help in feeling less stressed. I can't thank him enough! He also offered to help me find other photographers that would meet my budget in case he didn't meet my budget, which I personally thought was him going above and beyond. My now husband also does photography (although not wedding photography) and he thought Kyle was really incredibly. On the day of the wedding, Kyle was awesome. His crew was also really fun. It felt like we had known everyone for a long time and they were just at our wedding taking photos like everyone else. Everyone had a great time with Kyle. Both my mother and my husband's mother really liked him. My friends who were setting up the wedding also enjoyed his company and were getting along with him like they had known him for years! I think having a photographer that can leave you feeling at ease, and like yourself is highly crucial especially at a stressful event like a wedding. I appreciate Kyle letting me bust out my funny faces when smiling was too much. We've had a sneak peak of our photos and we are in love and yearning for more! They look magical. :)

We were looking at photographers for our wedding and after going through dozens of other photographers albums, we came across Alex Levine's and were immediately captivated by the composition of his photos and ability to capture his audience in the perfect moments. He was very responsive and flexible, even when our venue had to be changed at the last moment. His charismatic personality made posing our family for the initial photos both fun, and easy. Upon receiving our downloadable photo album (which was delivered incredibly fast), I couldn't believe the clarity and amazingly captured candid moments from the entire night. I highly recommend Alex Levine, and am very happy to say that he was able to capture the love and energy of our wedding night in a way that completely exceeded my expectations.

I can't get over how wonderful, talented, and patient Jaclynn is! I contacted her in my search for a wedding photographer, and with the first meeting I knew I wouldn't want anyone else photographing my wedding. She offered to give us a engagement shoot while she was in town, and worked very well with our dogs (who are RARELY on a leash and have never been anywhere but home). Each image I received from the shoot was beautiful, and I'm a person who typically hates how I look in pictures. I have repeatedly changed my wedding date (from over 18 months away to 3 months away to now 6 months away) and each time she bent over backwards to ensure she would be available for my wedding date. I cannot emphasize my gratitude to this incredible woman enough. I will continue to use her as my photographer even after my wedding date has passed!

The StoryMakers provided video services for our recent wedding vow renewal ceremony. They were affordable, worked with us to understand what we were looking for, were subtle/seamless during our event, and quickly provided a finished video to us. We're happy that now we have a video to remember the key moments of our event and to share with family and friends!

After meeting her, we were confident she was our photographer. She's professional, fun, creative, and knows some great places to take great shots. She's also very patient and cares about her work. We would absolutely hire her again and, without hesitation, recommend her to others.

Achong Photography was recommended to me and I couldn’t be happier!! Andrew Achong was able to capture my wedding even better than what I remember (and I thought that was impossible). The most nerve racking thing is wondering what service you are getting, with Achong Photography you have none of that! Andrew takes the time to get to know you and understands your needs and wants. He’s amazing and I am paying it forward and recommending him again and again!!!

She was great to work with. Arrived on time and super friendly. However, after 4 hours of wedding photos I only have TWO photos of my husband and I alone where we are both looking at the camera. And we are not even smiling. I have cried so much. Disappointed doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel. I’m crushed. My wedding photos were so expensive and I don’t even have 1 single picture of us alone together smiling at the camera. And she only captured 2 of my top three must have pictures on top of that.

Sarah was our wedding photographer and she was amazing to work with! She is so fun to be around and helps non-photogenic folks like myself relax and have a good time while capturing beautiful photos that we absolutely cherish. She was super professional, even when a snake slithered through our photo shoot! We have incredibly lovely memories of our wedding day thanks to Sarah. Book her now!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a videographer and what do they do?

A videographer professionally films weddings and other events and edits the footage to create film keepsakes or marketing materials for their clients. Wedding videographers record all the key elements of your wedding day, ceremony and reception, and then edit the hours of film during post-production to make a wedding video, social media highlight reels, and any other film features you choose. Wedding videography captures, in live action, your vows, the cake-cutting, the first dance, reception toasts, the decor, the guests and all the details of your day. Many wedding videographers also interview guests (based on an interview list provided by the couple) and incorporate the recorded responses into the wedding video. Event videography typically costs less than wedding videography, as events are shorter with less detail. The national average cost for event videography is $500-$760, while the national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. A videographer usually does not need to be licensed, but it is important to confirm they have insurance and good standing in the business community, as well as good client reviews. A great majority of the work happens during post-production. The pros watch and blend together the hours of footage they took (sometimes from multiple cameras) to capture the story of your wedding day or event.

How do you choose a wedding videographer?

A wedding videographer will create a lifetime memory for you from edited video footage of your wedding day, ceremony and reception. Choosing a wedding videographer starts with looking online at portfolios of their past work. There’s no need to talk to anyone unless you love what you see. Next, make sure they have good reviews and past client experience; don’t be shy about asking for references if there aren’t any posted online. When you find someone who has a style you love, ask if they are available on your wedding day. If so, it’s time to talk pricing. Be clear about your maximum budget, and ask what kind of packages they offer. Pricing will depend on the number of crew needed for filming, the hours they are required to be onsite, post-production editing, and the length of the final product. Talk with several wedding videographers to get a feel for what prices are like in your region. Nationally, the average cost for wedding videography ranges between $990 and $1,260 per event. Once you agree on a product and have a plan, get everything in a written and signed contract. Clearly state the details of what is expected for your wedding day and from the final product. Be prepared to pay a deposit to reserve their services for the day, then pay the remainder upon receiving the video.

What should you ask your wedding videographer before hiring?

Finding the perfect wedding videographer doesn’t have to be stressful. Asking a few key questions upfront will help you find the right fit for your big day. Before talking with wedding videographers, research their work online. Look at their websites, business profiles and social media, and see what their finished wedding videos look like. If the style fits what you’re envisioning, it’s time to reach out. During initial contact, make sure you get along with the person. This is important since they’ll be interacting with you and your guests.

Your first question should be about their availability; there’s no point in going further if they’re booked on your wedding day. Ask to see references if they’re not readily available online. Next, it’s time to talk about money. Ask how they determine rates or what kind of packages they offer. When you settle on a rate and the services you want, make sure to have a written contract that outlines everything, including cost, length of time they film, what post-production will include, and when you can expect to receive the edited project.

How much is videography for a wedding?

Wedding videography is one thing many couples regret not paying for. It may seem like just another expense during wedding planning, but it’s really special to have a moving memory of your big day. The national average cost for wedding videography is $990-$1,260. Pricing can vary depending on wedding length, special film features, the amount of editing required, and how many videographers are needed to cover the event. Many videographers offer packages that provide different levels of service. A very simple wedding documentary could be $600 or more, while a full-scale cinematic experience involving multiple videographers could be $2,500 or more. Here’s an example of average package pricing:

  • Package 1: $1,400
    • Footage during and after the ceremony, including highlights requested by the couple.
    • Two cameras with audio equipment.
    • DVD including a 3- or 4-minute edit to a song of the couple’s choice and a 45- to 50-minute raw edit covering the entire event.
    • Recordings of guests’ good wishes to the couple.
  • Package 2: $1,800
    • Includes everything from Package 1, plus an additional videographer (2 total) and aerial videography.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want. Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June. Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.
