Introduction: I love music, and I am a fun teacher! I teach piano for beginner to early advanced students ages five to adult. Along with teaching using the traditional method approach, I can also teach improvisation.
I am a church pianist/keyboardist and can play both hymn style and contemporary praise and worship as well as pop music. I have been teaching for more than 35 years. I have a B.A. in music, and I am a member of the National Music Teachers Association, the Washington State Music Teachers Association, and the Tacoma Music Teachers' Association.
I teach only private lessons one student at a time. If you want to learn piano for the joy of playing, I am your teacher!

Learning piano was a chore for me personally. When I was little I didn't have a piano teacher like Miss Janie. My kid is so lucky to have her as piano teacher. Miss Janie has a wonderful way working with kids. We are blessed to have her as our daughter's piano teacher!

She is extremely nice. She compliments you if did something right and also corrects you if you're missing something. I improved a lot with her help and I really enjoy being her student. I highly recommend her.

Janie is fantastic. I am an old dog and playing piano is new trick. She kindly guides my past my numerous mistakes and helps me advance.

Ms. Downing helped my son with piano lessons. He struggled with identifying musical notes and matching them with sounds. I appreciate her allowing us to use her personal piano in her home, for the past 4 months.
I was impressed with her methods of teaching, coming from a background of teaching english in Asia she uses hand motions and songs to help with memorizing musical notes. She is very flexible with scheduling and goes above and beyond when making the lessons understandable, so my son doesn't feel confused or overwhelmed.
The quality of the work has been outstanding! There's nothing I would change. I enjoy my experience with her
