Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Is it worth it to hire a lawn service?

Hiring a lawn care professional can save you time and money on your lawn. Professionals know exactly which products to use to solve your lawn’s issues, such as removing crabgrass or controlling pests. Many lawn care companies are results-oriented, meaning that they come with a guarantee to provide results.

If you’re DIY-ing it, you may save some money on costs. But you also might spend lots of money at the store that goes straight down the drain.

Contact the best lawn care services near you and get free estimates from several professionals before DIY-ing your lawn.

Is it worth it to hire a professional to mow your lawn?

Although hiring a lawn care company is more expensive than doing it yourself, it can be well worth the money. For starters, it saves you time and equipment maintenance, which may be justifiable financially. It also creates a more professional appearance. Plus, a pro can spot problems before they occur. This can save you money on expensive reseeding, aeration and other types of lawn repair down the road.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.

Do landscapers or lawn care professionals offer remote or virtual services?

Landscapers and lawn care professionals generally do not offer remote or virtual services. But if you come across a profile that states the landscaper is offering remote services, it’s best to contact them to see what type of remote work is offered.

Typically, lawn care and landscaping professionals can perform many of their duties without coming into physical contact with clients. Message local lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming, and lawn care companies near you to schedule a video call and inquire about remote services.

How can I find out if a landscaper or lawn care professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To consult national guidelines on essential COVID-19 service providers and see whether a lawn care professional qualifies, visit a page on CISA’s website called Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. This website contains 16 categories of critical infrastructure sectors that you can search through. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure so you should also check your city or state’s government website.

Can I use digital payments to pay for outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing, tree trimming and other similar services?

Many outdoor landscaping and design, lawn mowing and tree trimming companies will likely accept some form of digital payment instead of cash or check. The COVID-19 pandemic will likely causing more businesses to adopt digital platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Venmo, Square Cash and Google Pay.

Search professionals’ online profiles to see if they list digital payment services, and ask them about their payment policies during a consultation call.

Does a landscaper or lawn care professional need to enter my home?

Because landscaping and lawn maintenance take place outdoors, it is unlikely that these professionals will need to enter your home.

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, practice social distancing at all times -- even with professionals doing work outside. You can minimize exposure during a consultation by using a video chat service. And when you pay, you can use a digital payment service like PayPal. Discuss strategies with any lawn mowing, landscaping, tree trimming and lawn care companies you may be considering.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a landscaper or lawn care professional when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a landscaper or lawn care professional, you can take safety precautions on the worksite by not making any physical contact, keeping at least 6 feet between you and the pro(s) at all times and using digital payment platforms instead of cash or check.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a landscaper or lawn care professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation call with a lawn care professional or landscaper during the COVID-19 pandemic, take advantage of digital technologies to avoid face-to-face exposure. When searching for lawn mowing, landscaping and lawn care companies online, ask if they’ll do a video call to assess the job and give you an estimate. You can also go over strategies for completing the job and conducting virtual payments to stay safe.

How do you look after your lawn?

Having a beautiful lawn doesn’t just happen by magic. A multi-pronged approach to lawn care will result in a healthy lawn that will have your neighbors green with envy. The national average price for multi-service lawn care ranges from $40 to $50. Whether you tackle the project yourself or hire a lawn care professional, looking after your lawn requires consistent work. A baseline of lawn care is keeping your grass mowed and your irrigation system working properly. Fertilizing plants and grasses, as well as trimming and pruning foliage, may promote the health of your plants and lawn. Many lawn care pros offer different packages with varying monthly fees depending on your lawn size and the services you desire. Here are a few examples of average lawn care prices:

  • 1,000- to 2,500-square-foot lawn: $60-$90 per month
  • 5,000-square-foot lawn or larger: $110-$150 per month.
    • Includes lawn maintenance, cleanups and irrigation repairs. The company trims shrubs, pulls weeds, blows out yard waste, fertilizes and does minor irrigation repairs.
  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
  • 8,001- to 15,000-square-foot property: $35 per week/$140 per month.
  • 15,001- to 20,000-square-foot property: $40 per week/$160 per month.
    • Includes mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.

It is not clear that when you hire them that you are hiring another broker of different lawn care businesses. You also are required to pay Lawn Love Care with a charge card.

My lawnmower broke and the grass was way too long. Grizzly bear lawn care was available on short notice to take care of it before the Fourth of July weekend.

Lawn Love is NOT a lawn care service, they are a service that connects customers with lawn care service providers. They are essentially a Thumbtack that acts as more pro-active middle man and only offers lawn service. No one who works at Lawn Love will mow your lawn, they only do customer service. It's almost as if Thumbtack made an account on Thumbtack and then promoted Thumbtack services. They are a similar service to Lawnstarter (which I have found more consistent in actually finding a service provider). A few flags, especially for those needed service in the next 2 weeks: Lawn Love will advertise availability in your area even if they do not have active contracts/relationships/availability with lawn services in your area. Lawn Love will allow you to book appointments and confirm those appointments even if they don't have a lawn pro that can actually service your lawn on that date. What then happens is you will get a confirmation for the date you choose, but then a follow up rescheduling your appointment. This will happen over and over and over. I have experience attempting to schedule with Lawn Love through their app/website, I can't imagine the experience is much different here, but giving the benefit of 2 stars vs. 1. Hopefully the back and forth on Thumbtack will allow for more transparency around availability, but be wary, this is not actually a lawn pro. You are communicating with a scheduling service/middle man AND that scheduling service/middle man is taking a cut of the lawn pro's profits, so take that into consideration when you're comparing rates.

CD Solutions told me the time they would arrive and gave me a quote ahead of the work. They arrived when they said and took care of a yard that was a mess quickly and efficiently. I would highly recommend them. They are now my regular lawn care company.

The guys did a great job of spring cleanup, taking care of our lawn that was already 12" high, and reapplying mulch. All of that under typical Seattle rain, so I definitely appreciated their level of commitment there. Thank you!

Continental Yard Care far exceeded our expectations! We have a broken lawn mower at the moment and our yard has gotten out of control but, now it looks beautiful! Very reasonable for the amount of work that needed to be done. Highly recommend!

Anthony and his team were hired to clean up our lawn which was overrun with leaves, weeds and other debris, and they did a stellar job. They had an amazing attitude, were really friendly and took tremendous care in their work. They transformed our lawn, which looked like a complete disaster beforehand, to something we could be proud of. My husband and I were amazed and I would 100% forward to working with them in the future!

These guys are great. Every 2 weeks they come and take care of the mowing and yard maintenance. When I schedule other lawn maintenance (trimming the hedge, thinning out the plants) it is never a problem. Im very happy with the service and professionalism. Most definitely will continue to use La Hermosa

Schedule an estimate for mowing. Arrived on time and gave a fair price, bonus he said he could take care of it today. Within an 2 hours my lawn was mowed. Very happy and would recommend his services. Got a quote for weekly service as well which is very reasonable.

Facilitated the process all through Thumbtack, which is what I want from this type of service. Far too often service providers immediately want to get on the phone to organize. The reason I use these services is to not have to use the phone. So super helpful when Tran's Lawn Care didn't require that.

On president’s day my husband and I got into a snowboarding accident and have been unable to mow our tiny strip of lawn, and our HOA was threatening us with fines — Andy saved the day! One day after contacting him Andy came over and quickly took care of our patch of overgrown grass. Thanks, man! :)

Fantastic. Contacted him on Saturday, he came same day to do the estimate. The next day he arrived, took care of the lawn, leaves, weeds, edging, etc while we were out. Yard looks fantastic, flower beds are fantastic. Reasonable rates. Highly recommend. I’ll definitely use him going forward. Thanks!

Response time was pretty slow. I followed up several times and finally agreed on a day and time to meet, but it resulted in a no show. I also tried calling and texting but no response. I had high hopes considering the high ratings and even raced home in Seattle traffic to meet up in the evening for a consultation. Hope everything is ok but will move forward with a different lawn care specialist.

Our lawn person left us in the lurch. Tran's responded quickly, though I know they are very busy now. They came out within a couple days and labored 1.5 hrs to get our tall grass down to a manageable level. The two guys who came out were very diligent, courteous, and thorough, taking care of leaves on the deck and walkway, and taking away the clippings. Great service.

We hired Curb Appeal to do a bunch of work on our backyard. We needed multiple small trees removed, a garden bed dug (100 feet or so) and about 15 small hedge plants planted. We also needed overall pruning and lawn care. They did an incredible job at an affordable price! We are now having them come twice a month to maintain our yard. Thank you for the great work! Our yard looks beautiful!

We wanted to give these guys nothing less than 5 stars, but soon after, we realized this was a mistake. We had booked them to install fresh sod and edging. Throughout the work, there were last minute no-show with no information conveyed. Had to text them to understand what happened, when they would reply they won't be able to show up that day. Still the work done by them was beautiful and some work was left (mowing the lawn after 3 weeks, pruning around the garden, planting plants in the ground), for which they promised to come after 3 weeks. It has been 2 months since with no response. Have texted them personally as well as dropped message on thumbtack with no response whatsoever. They left two wheelbarrows outside the house which I don't know what to do, and now I need to find someone else to complete their job and pay extra of what was agreed upon. We had a raccoon problem and contacted them if they can help us with chicken wire (obviously we would have paid for this work), but no response again. Looks like they only care about one time work without establishing long term relationships with the clients.
