I serendipitously met Jerry the day after the caterer for my wedding bailed on us. I am super grateful because I cannot imagine any better service for my wedding. That was the day that my wife and I dreamed about since we were little, and let's be honest -- food is the way to most peoples' heart -- so I'm very glad to receive compliments from guests that the food was excellent! My wedding was on the last weekend of Sept. 2014 at a farm near Brooks, OR. Jerry and his crew arrived several hours ahead of the ceremony start time, served up a delicious, several course meal in a banquet style, and were SO gracious to my Russian relatives who brought some Russian cuisine (which was unexpected). If you do business with Jerry, you can expect to be consoled by the air of competence he exudes. He is very approachable and kind, and is very good at painting at a picture of how the food will look like at your event.

Sandra recently catered a wedding for me. She was quick with her response to me and with a quote. We communicated through email, talked on the telephone and met in person to finalize the menu. I highly recommend Sandra. The food was delicious. The Salmon was cooked to perfection. Everyone was happy with the feast.

We had Alison as our caterer for two meals during our weekend wedding. The experience was simply amazing. The food itself was exemplary. The short ribs served during the dinner were a perfect compliment to our "grand feast" theme as were the roasted vegetables. All the bread was baked by Alison and was sought out by guests long after the dinner. For breakfast she served pancakes with fresh berries inside, eggs, and most popularly...the extra sauce from the short ribs. My guests used it on the pancakes, eggs, and eventually just poured it on bread. We believe the bread is what kept many from drinking it straight. There were no complaints from vegetarian guests as all portions were plentiful. Because the nature of our wedding, Alison was onsite with us for two days. Her personality is gregarious and zany in the best way. Everyone who met her was instantly fond of her. We had last minute technical problems dealing with a very old kitchen oven and Alison adapted immediately and with complete grace. If I had to leave with a final pull quote for Alison it would be "New York quality catering with a Portland sociability."

Working with Maribel at Fusion International Catering to cater our Wedding was a dream. She was very responsive and adapted to changes, answered all our questions, and offered great suggestions. The real star however was the wonderful food. We had plenty in quantity and variety and many people took plates home. It not only tasted amazing but it was presented beautifully. We had originally worked with another cater and a month out it became clear they were not going to work. They did not get back to us timely and we were afraid they would not be reliable on the big day. Maribel and her team stepped in and saved the day. I highly recommend them!

Keith Banks (Your Kitchen Chef) catered my wedding in August, and he was practically perfect in every way. I recommend him highly. Of course the bottom line for a caterer is the food, and it was superb. I got exactly what I wanted - unlike other caterers, who promoted their own specialties - and every item was excellent! Keith was extremely flexible. I wanted a whole lamb roasted on a spit, and Keith purchased a grill to do the job. "That's how we grow," he explained. "We will use it again in the future." When we wanted pie instead of cake, Keith created a pie bar with 6 great pies - plus a small, delicious cake for the traditional ceremony. Perhaps most importantly, Keith felt like a partner rather than a vendor. He has an upbeat, can-do attitude, and he offered good advice. After all, he's been to more weddings than we have. Keith's wife Sherri works with him, and it was a delight to spend time with both of them. He provided full service, including two visits to the site before the event. His staff was friendly and efficient, and they actually seemed to enjoy themselves while working hard. Keith played a large part in making my wedding a total success and easy joyful celebration!

I never imagined my dream wedding like a lot of girls do. I always figured a wedding would be between the bride and the groom and never thought much about feeding guests or even having a beautiful dress. But, in January of 2016 I set the date to finally walk down the aisle. I had six months to plan the day's events. It seemed more than daunting to plan everything. As a woman pushing 40 with a full time career and a child to raise, having the "perfect wedding" was definitely not a priority to me. Also, with finances being an issue, i certainly was counting my pennies and not expecting anything fancy at all when I added everything up. A few months before the wedding I reached out to Danielle and Austin, knowing they were chefs and had recently been married themselves, to get a few money savings tips and maybe some free advice on how I could feed about 100 people on a tight budget. I was going to attempt a potluck wedding. That first phone call with Danielle changed everything. I let her know my situation and I laid it all out for her. Bottom line, I wanted a no frills- "just feed the people" wedding reception! By the end of that fateful phone call, Danielle offered me peace of mind in my menu choices, awesome tips on what foods go well with others and what doesn't and she even provided me surprising comfort with a particularwedding ceremony detail that I had been worried about. Her advice on a personal level and a professional level relieved me so much. At that point I realized I NEEDED to hire her officially and not just skim her knowledge for free advice! Ha! Shortly after I officially hired her, she provided a beautiful wedding menu just for me that expressed the casual feeling I wanted but added TONS of class! She met with me briefly before the wedding to go over a few more details. Even during that brief meeting I was left at ease knowing she fully understood my plans and trusted her completely. I wasn't worried a bit. A week before the wedding, the unthinkable happened. My outdoor picnic wedding had to be cancelled due to rain. Danielle and Austin were quick to make all appropriate adjustments and eased my mind about the sudden change of plans as well. On my wedding day, I was so happy to walk into the kitchen that morning and see her and Austin's smiling faces. They both seemed SO cool and relaxed. Neither one of them had that "hurried" chef look. They created an amazing spread with such elegant details that really surprised me! Cucumber-melon water, anyone? Healthy and savory quinoa pasta? Sheesh! What a TREAT! When it was time for the champagne toast, Danielle brought my glass to me with such a gracious and refreshed smile that I didn't even notice that she had been hustling as she helped serve the rest of my guests their drinks. Just pure professionalism and talent. Danielle and Austin have a unique talent of helping their client clarify their menu ideas and bring them into fruition. They took a scary and possibly pathetic wedding day and turned it into a memorable and elegant experience. Thank you guys! We will ALWAYS hire you and would be happy to recommend your incredible gifts to all of our friends and family

Two chicks & a rooster catered my wedding of 100 guests. They did a fabulous job! Vicki was very flexible in her working with us as we were working within a budget and also changed our menu ideas. Vicki and the other workers were personable and friendly with our guests which created an even more special event.

Alison is an absolute rockstar. I hired her as a bartender for my wedding and she was wonderful to work with from the very beginning. She had great suggestions and communicated with me often. After discovering she makes cakes as well I asked her to make my wedding cake which turned out absolutely gorgeous and exactly as I had pictured. She seems to be a jack of all trades really. A few days before the wedding when we finally knew the forecast, Alison contacted me to suggest we switch up the menu for more drinkable beers in the heat (corona complete with lime slices) and the guests absolutely loved it. She was running back and forth like a mad woman and even with 160 guests and just her working we never formed a line. I would hire Alison again in a heartbeat for her upbeat attitude, hard work, talent, and impeccable planning. Thanks Alison!

Jamie catered our wedding in 2014 and did a phenomenal job. I would recommend her to anyone. A friend of mine attended another wedding she had catered, and highly recommended her. Jamie was very easy to work with, and her food was absolutely delicious. She really worked with us to create the menu we envisioned (of some of our favorite foods). The presentation of all of the food, and everyone who worked with her at our wedding were absolutely wonderful. I truly feel that Jamie and her team went above and beyond on our wedding day, and we are very grateful. We received many compliments on how delicious the food was at our wedding, and in the weeks afterwards.

Joslyn catered a wedding for a friend of ours. She was punctual and professional with a calming warm presence amidst the hectic festivities . The food was outstanding! She was confined by a restrictive budget yet the food excelled our expectations. She worked tirelessly throughout the ceremony and reception to make sure everything went smoothly. The food presentation was beautiful and appetizing. We can't think how we would improve our experience with her service. We recommend you to experience her food catering service yourself!

    · ---WEDDING MAGIC---- I will never use another caterer as long as I live. They elevated my rehearsal dinner to a level of intimacy and class I didn't know existed. They opened their restaurant doors to for an exclusive meal for my close friends, and family then proceeded to wait on us like we were royalty. Then when they catered my wedding reception, they somehow managed to exceed all expectations(which were high after the amazing dinner) then presented a feast to our extended family and friends(well over 100 people) that once again expressed their elegance and class. Thank you Diversity Cafe, Tonya and Carrie for helping make our wedding day EPIC!!!

We just celebrated my in-laws' 50th wedding anniversary. Liz and company catered our event. Liz and her sister listened to us and took our expectations to heart. They were very professional to deal with. They were prompt in responding to our texts and emails. Liz visited the event location two days ahead so she knows how to setup buffet tables. They showed up hours ahead to prepare. They were friendly and presentable. The food was absolutely delicious and each dish complimented one another. They helped in the clean up and packing all leftovers for us to take home. We had such positive experience with them. Thank you Liz and company for ensuring our event went well.

Regan and I cannot thank you enough for all you did to ensure that her wedding was all that she hoped it would be. From the first, when we wanted a simple ceremony with just a few guests followed by cake and champagne with the residents, to the final day, when we had 45 people for the ceremony in the garden, followed by lunch in the Sullivan Theater and then cake and champagne with the residents in the Hemingway Room, you were amazing. Every time we needed help (Referrals for bakeries? Photographers? Hair stylists?), every time we had questions (Can we have flowers delivered to you? Can we add something to the buffet for the kids? Can we play a DVD slideshow at the reception? ), your response was always “no problem, we can do that”. The lunch buffet was delicious and plentiful (SO glad we didn’t cut the whipped potatoes with basil!), the servers were professional, and the transition from one location to the next seamless. And the little touches were so thoughtful (everyone loved the “eat, drink and be married” sign outside the reception!). You made the wedding so easy and so much fun, Melissa. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

      • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
      • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
      • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
      • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
      • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
      • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

      • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
      • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
      • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
      • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
      • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
