Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up a consultation with a house cleaner during the COVID-19 pandemic is by using virtual, online tools. Start by performing an online search for local house cleaners. Message them to set up either a phone call or video call to perform a consultation. During this call, they can give you recommendations and may be able to estimate the cost of their services. Be sure to discuss whether they accept virtual payments and any precautions they can take to perform the job safely.

Can I use digital payments to pay for house cleaning?

Not only do many house cleaners accept digital payments through platforms like Zelle, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Venmo and more, but this may become more common as the COVID-19 pandemic pushes more service workers to digitize. This means you can pay your house cleaner without making physical contact or handling money.

If cleaning is absolutely essential during the current crisis, consult with the house cleaner beforehand to ensure a safe monetary transaction that complies with current government guidelines and recommendations for social distancing.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a house cleaner when social distancing?

If you hire a house cleaner to clean the inside of your home, do not make physical contact. Stay at least 6 feet apart at all times, sanitize any surfaces after cleaning and wash your hands thoroughly. Exchange all payments digitally instead of with cash. When contacting a house cleaner, put a plan in place to ensure everyone's safety.

How can I find out if a house cleaner is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

A house cleaner is generally not considered an essential service sector during the coronavirus pandemic. To find out which services are considered essential, visit your city and state government, and read their guidelines. A national list of essential service providers can be found on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 site. This webpage lists 16 different infrastructure sectors considered to be essential. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Does a house cleaner need to enter my home?

Yes, in almost all cases a house cleaner needs to enter your home. However, a cleaner may not need to enter your home if they are solely cleaning outside areas.

There may be some cases in which a cleaner is necessary. If so, take precautions — avoid being in the same room, make no physical contact, sanitize any surfaces and pay through a digital service instead of using cash.

Do house cleaners offer remote or virtual services?

House cleaning is generally done in person, but some may be willing to offer remote services. If you find a house cleaner’s profile that states they’re offering remote services, contact the pro to talk about your options.

If you’d rather hire a house cleaner to clean your home when the pandemic is over, you may be able to book an appointment at a later date. Start by comparing local house cleaners in your area side-by-side.

Should I hire a move-out cleaning service or do it myself?

You may benefit from hiring a professional move-out cleaning service, depending on your budget, time frame and whether you will be getting a deposit back. Hiring a cleaning service takes the stress out of your move. But if you’ve had your house regularly deep-cleaned, or if your landlord will charge you for cleaning anyway, you can save costs by DIY-ing it.

How long does it take to clean a house professionally?

Generally, getting your house cleaned professionally can take several hours. The time it takes for house cleaners to complete their job depends on the size of your home, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms you have, the type of service you require and the condition of your house. It also might depend on how many employees are cleaning and the supplies they are using. If you get recurring cleaning services, the first visit might take a bit longer than the subsequent visits.

When choosing the best house cleaner for you, ask for an estimate about how long their services will take.

How much is a house cleaning?

The national average cost for house cleaning ranges between $25 and $50 per hour, per cleaner. However, the cost of house cleaning services near you might be different.

House cleaning prices vary based on how many square feet your home is, how dirty your house gets and how often the cleaning service comes. And, prices can be lower in areas with a lower cost of living, higher in big cities or affluent regions.

Some companies charge a set amount — such as 5 cents — per square foot, with a minimum amount, such as $100. You may save money by increasing the frequency of your house cleaning visits. Often a company will charge you less per cleaning when you schedule more cleanings per month. The cost advantage rewards your loyalty, and also reflects the fact that more frequent cleanings make it easier to maintain a high level of cleanliness in your home. A housecleaning service may charge more for the first visit or for one-time services than for recurring cleanings.

How much does it cost to deep clean a house?

Deep cleaning a house goes beyond the surface level to clear out the dust, grime and gunk that’s collecting on the fan blades, hiding in the blinds, and built up inside the refrigerator drawers. Deep cleaning of a home or apartment costs more than regular house cleaning because it takes more time, effort, and cleaning products. You may choose to have a deep cleaning once or several times a year in addition to your standard cleaning services. You may have a one-time deep cleaning to prepare for company or to clean after a house party. Companies may charge an hourly rate or a price per square foot, or may offer you a flat rate after they have visited your home and estimated work time. The national average house cleaning price is $110-$150, with rates ranging higher for deep-cleaning services. Here are some examples of how a company may calculate their deep-cleaning prices:

  • 10 cents per square foot (compared with 5 cents per square foot for standard house cleaning).
  • $300 for a 3,000-square-foot home.
  • $25 per hour per worker for deep-cleaning services.

I was searching for cleaning service for move out. I found this application and requested for quote. Got message from RB janitorial LLC. They asked for 450$ and finalized for 430$ for move out cleaning entire house, cabinets, refrigerator, bathrooms, 3 rooms and except garage. Didn’t arrived on scheduled time and started cleaning the house. They didn’t even clean cabinets, refrigerator. Only one speaks English from their team. Hard to communicate with them. They Asked extra 50$ to clean refrigerator. Which we didn’t agree. They asked only cash to pay and we paid them. Very very unprofessional service. I don’t recommend for any carpet or house cleaning. It’s waste of money. I asked for receipt they said will email by EOD but not received. I sent couple of messages but no reply. See the image of kitchen floor after cleaning.. still there is lot of dust.

First of all they came a hour late. Husband and wife showed up and left their kids in the truck while they ATTEMPTED to clean the house and clean carpets. Bathroom showers were never cleaned and mirrors left streaky. Black dog hair was left in walk in closet, that they never even attempted to clean that floor. Never washed inside windows as little kid face marks remained in the glass, all around awful experience. Ryan did give me a discount but so frustrating when hiring someone to clean your beautiful home that you had purchased with hard earned money and now have to go back and clean it yourself. So disappointed!! Make sure you know who is coming to clean before you hire someone from here. Not good! Stressed and frustrated!!

We just moved into our new home that desperately needed a good cleaning. I've been out of town and I was so disappointed when I arrived and saw the job the cleaning service did. For example, I wiped off the kitchen floor and the paper towel was black😐. There's still hair on the bathroom counter top and floor, dust galore on the bathroom shelves and ceiling fans. I would not recommend this company. Sorry, I have to go so I can clean the rest of my house!

I scheduled Jodi for a one-time house clean as I have not been able to do the job well with my hand eczema and dust allergies. Her schedule was flexible, and she arrived cheerful and on time. She didn't mind navigating around my cat or my having a somewhat difficult exit route. She asked if I had things she should be careful not to move. I appreciated her willingness to do the tasks I especially wanted done, as well as the extra care she took with things like the bathroom towels, which I hadn't even mentioned. She got right to work and had a good attitude about it. It was so nice to come home to made beds, sparkling fixtures, and dust-free ledges. The only area which did not seem as clean as I was hoping it might was the kitchen floor, but that had unattended for quite some time before this, and she did say that to notice a truly thorough cleaning would take more than one visit. Plus she did the extra work in the basement and vacuumed the furniture, which I had made a special requests about. This was my first time hiring a cleaner, and I felt truly pampered. When I instinctively tried to pull my son's comforter up as I showed her the house layout, she said something like, "Put that down! That's my job."--a phrase every working mom should hear once in a while. So, all in all, Jodi was a delight to work with. I'd highly recommend her for your one-time or regular cleaning needs.
